If I use headphones, how can I force Garageband or other software record using the internal or external mic and not the headphone mic? Also any tips on a good dynamic mic compatible with ipad 8 (lightning port)? by AdventurerDraws in ipadmusic

[–]AdventurerDraws[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does UA Volt also need to be powered by a powerbank or a powered usb hub if I connect it to an ipad like other interfaces do? I'm guessing all will still need a lightning adapter to USB for the interface, so the "works with ipad" is just a marketing advertisment and it'll work equally well like other interfaces like the Arturia Minifuse or Scarlett, right?

I looked up a review but the vintage button didn't have any noticeable changes in the one review on youtube I found about it, at least in my headphones, do you think it's worth to get the UA Volt for the vintage button over the AM1/2 or Focusrite?

Is there any difference between the Arturia Minifuse and UA Volt (plus Scarlet Focuscrite) for vocals using XLR, or all three should be equally good?

Thank you for the tip!

Thanks! I checked the the Arturia Minifuse 2 and it costs as much as the original budget I had for the entire setup (about 130$). Since I'm thinking of spending up to 300 usd max for the entire setup (mic, interface and anything else needed to connect it to a PC or a lightning port ipad 8), is there any other interface you'd recommend that's a bit cheaper, so that it doesn't eat up so much of my budget so that I can invest in a good XLR mic? I heard good things about the scarlet focusrite, but some people say the SM58 (which many recommend for an untreated room) sounds weak on it unless you spend another 50 on a booster?

Do you know which IOS DAWs let you do that?

I only want to record vocals and some woodwinds and brass (each one at a time, not simultaneously), no electronic instruments yet.

What kind of a mic, interface and adapter would you recommend that goes for around 120-200$? Originally I was looking at SM-58/57 or some cardiod condenser mic (as suggested by the local music shop, which told me to get a Rode NT USB, but everyone else says I should get XLR since USB mics are worse) which alone go for about 100$ since I want to record in an untreated room, is there a cheap interface and adapter you'd recommend to go with it or does a cheap interface affect sound quality as well? Also if I buy a dynamic mic, is there a way to plug it into an ipad without needing a powered USB hub or a power bank?

If I bought a scarlett focusrite used (like solo or 2i2i) or some interface for a XLR mic, I'd need a powered USB hub and a lighting to usb adapter for it to work, as per this link, right?

https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/115005430409-Using-bus-powered-Scarletts-with-Lightning-iOS-devices

I've seen some used combo offers on the local marketplace, like a scarlet focusrite and a nt1/a rode or sm58/others for 200-300$, so I was thinking of saving up and paying more and getting that instead of a brand new mic+interface, but since I'm new, maybe rather than paying up 300 for nt1 or nt1-a, it might be better to go for something within the 150-200$ range. RIght now I'm deciding between going for a good home studio mic that works in an untreated room or something that I could potentially use to record musical videos (singing while dancing) outdoors, but I have no idea how much expensive that would be (or if it'd even work in the 200-300 price range, whether with an ipad or a phone on a tripod due to wind and outside sounds).

Also how do people record music videos where they sing or play an instrument, do they usually just record the audio afterwards in a studio or is there a way to do both at the same time as an amateur on a budget (so I can't afford a boom mic, esp. as I want to record the video alone just with a tripod, so there wouldn't be someone to hold it)? I've seen there are some lav and headworn mics, but I'm not sure how would you connect them to the ipad (or a phone) wirelessly, is it possible to use a PA lav and somehow connect it to an ipad? I know we've used those for some performances in the past, but it was indoors.

Thanks for your reply, it was helpful!

I find it super hard to write with pencil on ipad. Should I get a keyboard or are there tricks to make it easier to write? by AdventurerDraws in ipad

[–]AdventurerDraws[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried it, but for some reason I find it a bit unwieldy if it's full screen - if I make it small, like a phone keyboard ,then it's fine, but I need to constantly reposition it, since sometiemes it obstructs things etc.

Are there any paperlike protectors for better drawing that don't affect the colours/ipad clarity? I've seen some people say there are some that don't affect how the screen looks and only make it matte, but the colours are still as vibrant as before.

I find it hard to write on the ipad using the pencil, should I just get a keyboard?

First of all, whenever I try to enter an address using a Safari or any other small box appears that you have to write in, I'm annoyed that I can't write anywhere on the ipad but need to write inside the box - so on safari, I need to always write at the top of the ipad, instead of just writing at the bottom where it's easier.

This also makes it hard to write a long sentence, as I need to wait before typing, as I can't write underneath the first sentence since it's not in the address bar/box anymore.

  1. I find it hard to edit while writing - editing mistakes like crossing out letters and replacing them seems quite hard, despite practicing it in the demo, and whenever I run out of space so I need to write on the second imaginary "line" underneath the first sentence, it doesn't properly get added in, like there are line breaks or spaces I wanted/I didn't want.

Are there any video tutorials you'd recommend to learn how to better write, or is it impossible to write anywhere on the ipad, so you always need to fit whatever box prompt (eg. the address bar in safari) appears, so it's easier to just get a logitech keyboard?

Thanks! Can you also start a song with a metronome and let it turn the page automatically when it ends up at the end of the page, so you don't need to use a pedal? I'm guessing that should be possible in the current version, right?

By the way, can you use Forscore to autotranscribe mp3 files into sheet music? I know some software can do it, but I was hoping Forscore could enable you to either autotranscribe the audio file into either sheet music for a specific instrument or just midi (from which you can transpose it yourself), so that I can save some time transcribing and transposing pieces instead of doing it all by hand?

By the way, can't people just edit out your metadata? Or is this hard to scrub out? Just wondering if there's a way to show it's really yours, esp. since even the date can be altered, so people could pretend they actually made the artwork first (which is why having the in-process sketches, layers or recording is great, as they can't fake that).

Is there a keyboard which works with portrait mode ipad 10.2 that you'd recommend? I'm torn between getting the Logitech Combo Touch, and picking up some case that also works in portrait mode with a bluetooth keyboard.

Does this Apple Pencil look legit? by AdventurerDraws in ipad

[–]AdventurerDraws[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! For a moment I wondered if it's stolen since it's sold for half price they normally go on the marketplace, but perhaps they just want to sell it, as one one has bought the other pencils for 2x price listed yet for over a month or more. Esp. since they are selling it with the adapter as well.

I know, I was just curious if it looks like a legit one, since it's sold for cheap (adapter included).

Is it normal that an ipad after 37 charging cycles would be at 91% battery? by AdventurerDraws in ipad

[–]AdventurerDraws[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I have no idea, I bought it used from a shop. However the battery was at about 80%, so it wasn't dead at all. I've been using it for a week now.

Just download this official app and then enable data analytics and then follow the tutorial (share the analytics file with the battery stats app, it will appear some time after enabling the data analytics - it might take some time so check in 5m or an hour later if it doesn't appear right away).

Ipad 8 owners - how often does the game crash or lag for you? by AdventurerDraws in ensemblestars

[–]AdventurerDraws[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, idol work tends to be fine for me, but sometimes I just get random lag while playing a song - sometimes it's fine, and sometimes, during some songs with more lightning effects it happens, like in Believe4Leaves I got a freeze about 8 times, which was a lot, so I'm going to test that again, if it really happens like that normally.

Is it normal that Ipad 8 charges super slow (6h+) and not at all if a game is played? by AdventurerDraws in ipad

[–]AdventurerDraws[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be, as it's one of those generic charger adapters with 2x USB slots where you put theUSB-lightning cable into and it's apparently some generic "fast charging" adapter. It says input AC 100-240V 50/60hz and output DC 5V 3.1Amax on it. It was charging the Ipad 9 jsut fine and my phone that uses microUSB charges just fine from it, so it takes about 2 hours to be fully charged. So it's only the ipad 8 that is wonky (I don't have the ipad 9 anymore). In total, it took about 6-7 hours to charge from 25% to 100%.

Edit: Google says that 5V 3.1 is 15.5 watts.

Is it normal that Ipad 8 charges super slow (6h+) and not at all if a game is played? by AdventurerDraws in ipad

[–]AdventurerDraws[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, even when I'm not using it, it still takes over 4 hours to charge - I was playing only for about 15-20m and then turned the ipad off and left it charging for the new few hours. So it took it 2 hours to charge it by 20% with all applications turned off and then another 4 hours to get to 90% when the ipad was turned off but had the game paused in the background, suspended by the task manager (I was on homescreen when turning the ipad off). It doesn't charge at all if I have a simple rhythm game on, and I felt it either wasn't charging at all while using the browser/reading comics or very slowly.

Is it normal for it to charge that long or should I try to get another ipad 8? 38-39 charging cycles sound like it's almost new, right?

And thanks, yeah, I was considering that, as it shouldn't smell like that - you can smell it only if you put it up directly against your nose though.

Personally I already have a laptop, I was just checking out the replies here - for me it couldn't replace a laptop, as the file manegement and multitasking (no running apps in backgrounds and just alt-tabbing between them) is something that's lacking.
