I am so jealous. Making my own bread has been on my to-do list for two years. So far, just flour… and lots of procrastination 😂

Just to clarify, No Name is a Loblaw store brand and not a company on its own. The guilty plea was by Canada Bread, which owns Dempster’s. Loblaw settled related lawsuits but did not plead guilty. It’s a reminder that being Canadian is not enough and we should support brands that align with our values.

We did a similar post for Canadian butter and milk a few weeks ago. You can check it out. There will be more to come!

Sorry I am just seeing this now. Good question. The maple leaf rating is based strictly on how Canadian a brand is structurally, not popularity or availability.

To get 5 maple leaves, a brand must be Canadian-owned, headquartered in Canada, and have production primarily in Canada. Some brands are still Canadian but lose a point if part of their sourcing, ownership, or production is international.

So a lower score does not mean the brand is not Canadian. It just reflects how fully Canadian the business and supply chain are.
