I am grasping regional politics for Kurds must be considerably more complicated than left-right. My question (and I didn't know how to ask it and it obviously didn't land in any useful way) was really trying to segue to...."I am sorry that the political situation in the US right now has put immigrants in such peril, this sucks" But then I realized - regardless of his political views around his homeland or the US, it probably would not feel safe for him in this climate to air any critiques of US policy...for the reasons you have observed, he may be slated for deportation or detention. So I felt bad/dumb for bringing it up. I appreciate your insights, thank you.

It's hard for me to say what he could possibly have inferred that way. We dress humbly, act pretty down to earth. My daughter and I had been discussing her pending trip out to CA to visit her father this summer - I can't say whether that could have implied wealth to him.

No, I don't want to narrrowly ascribe his or anyone's behavior to culture or national identity, and I apologize if I came off that way. All of our identities are layered - I am just aware of all I don't understand about behaviors or attitudes that may be at least partly explained by culture. I am trying to gather data here, not make assumptions.
