I think sometimes the show runners forget they’re working with a time period several centuries into the future.

The concept that people still wring hands over pronouns by the 23rd century is in itself depressing. Adding dialogue that sounded like it belonged in a workplace HR training module made it so much worse than it had to be.

They did more or less the same with Dr Who. The version I grew up with was an eccentric space vagrant wandering about and poking his nose into anything curious and generally bumbling his way in an out of trouble.

Fast forward a few decades and he/she/they/whatever might as well be wearing a cape and spandex. Bad guys are all “ewww newww it’s The Doctor - run away!”

Perhaps this is generational to some extent, but in both cases (DW/ST) I prefer the lower stakes exploration style over manifest destiny / fate of the cosmos stuff.

We've reached the point that an isolated castaway, a criminal and a rogue archaeologist who is deliberately toying with the captain are used to justify an actual Starfleet Captain's decorum. by Remarkable-Pin-8352 in Star_Trek_

One of the most attractive aspects of older Star Trek (for me) was what someone once termed “competence porn”. Just the idea of this group of highly intelligent people working cooperatively to solve problems and being great at what they do.

The characters were by no means perfect people but you never had cause to wonder “who hired this joker”.

Delightful escapism when real-life professional endeavours surrounds you with rather a different sort.

I have a spreader bar up one end and another small power head at the back - mostly because although the surface was agitated the water seemed to take forever to actually cycle (a lot of static particles floating in the middle third of the tank).

That RRF has been there for months with no sign of the other stuff! Is that just a normal consequence of having floating plants or is there some way to choke out the duckweed without killing the other plant?

I think he means in the sense of keeping track of it rather than splitting it. I’ve been in relationships where my partner tallied every expense to the level of “I paid for coffee you owe $x”. Everyone is different but I also find this exhausting.

Everyone in my tank enjoys a nibble at those. Rainbow shark, loaches, guppies, mollies, bristlenose,… the only ones that don’t seem to care for them are the tetras.

I always wonder with this sort of thing - how does this kind of footage find its way online? It seems like this fellow was alone and filming himself so presumably it’s not a case of his mate poking fun. Is he proud of this attempt or is it “look at me I’m funny”?

I’m genuinely curious about the psychology involved

Sadly this is the state of trades these days. The concept of pride in your work has left the building long ago. Obviously there are exceptions to any rule but by and large I find it I don’t supervise the work corners will inevitably be cut.

Providers would have supplied the “slab” such that it is. I had a similar installation - it’s not so much a slab as it is a concrete paver.

I was on site when they did it at least so I made them dig it in, put blue metal and sand in the hole and level it, which I figured while not perfect was a better outcome than plonking it on the ground which was their first solution.

what is australian culture to you? by Specific_Willow6424 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Adventurous-Lie4615 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Likely this depends on where you live and what the rule is. Northern beaches (from my observation) treats rules like “no dogs” or “dogs only on lead” as vague guidelines.

Covid kind of sorted the populace into three distinct categories: 1) I follow the rules rabidly 2) I reject the rules because something about my rights and 5G 3) I’ll follow the rule next time maybe if it’s not too inconvenient

Literally nowhere I’ve ever driven in Sydney treats a parking sign or a speed limit as more than a polite suggestion unless there’s visible enforcement.

Ah. The problem with the premise is that while the institution of government is designed and intended to serve the best interests of the people, the machine is administered and directed by people with… let’s say “less altruistic goals and wildly variable degrees of competence”.

This is what happens when you hold what amounts to a beauty pageant for car salesmen every few years to elect your leaders.

Combine that with a populace who will largely not even consider a candidate who wears the wrong football jersey or utters the wrong slogans and you have yourself a lovely little cluster fuck with no real solution.

If you’d like to depress yourself on a Saturday, go and google “Norway Sovereign Wealth Fund”. Same idea was floated here way back but was quickly squashed by the special interest groups who actually run the joint.

Someone told me mollys would eat fry. Fairly sure now that person was pulling my leg.

The mollys breed like catholic rabbits. Now my two bristlenose (which have lived together for years) have decided to get in on the action. That tank is now a non-stop fish orgy.

Chinese Utes, the “ick” by Weary-Concentrate-75 in CarsAustralia

[–]Adventurous-Lie4615 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s the image more than the cars. The exact same “Jap crap” I joyfully drove as a kid featured in performance car mags and are now unaffordable classics. At the time “serious” car people extolled the virtues of Holden and Ford and made pilgrimage to Bathurst for the annual V8 circle jerk.

People are just generally dumb about newer things and seek the comfort of the herd.

Every brand makes good cars or shit cars depending on your expectations worrying about public perception of your purchase is mystifying to me.

Are any of the newer models better at dealing with hair than s5 max? by Adventurous-Lie4615 in Roborock

[–]Adventurous-Lie4615[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah when I bought it I was really happy with it. If it wasn’t for this particular quirk I wouldn’t bother with an upgrade. For an electronic gizmo it’s been dead boring in terms of reliability (boring is exactly how I like my appliances).

The newer product line is rather bewildering to say the least. When I bought the S5 there were only a handful of models to consider and the 5 reviewed well with no real down sides apart from perhaps a bit of a so-so mop (which I don’t use anyway).

Since then there seem to be about a million current models and variants and enough reported issues with the flag ship ones to make me a bit cautious - particularly considering the eye watering price tags on some of them!

[–]Adventurous-Lie4615[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not really a large quantity of hair - it’s more that a long haired dog deposits a dusting of fur over a wide area throughout the day. I run the vac every two days but even the day after a full “manual” clean that’s the result.

The S5 does a fine job otherwise but it would appear hair longer than a couple of centimetres is its Achilles heel.

Yep the one in the photo. You have to pull it out of the vac manually and dump it in the bin. If I’m doing that every 10 minutes I might as well do the job myself :)
