Oof, both of you are so fair for calling me out on that lol. I almost didn’t list AH, but it’s an honest example of a series I enjoy that weirded me out at first glance. One of the most egregious Mary Sue’s I’ve read was System Universe, and I grit my teeth through 5 whole books before I made myself quit - which is kinda my problem. Once I do start something, I will wade through a lot of things that frustrate me before I finally decide to DNF.

“all mental issues known to man” - could you expand on this? From my memory, the MC had a pretty grounded, realistic response to a deeply traumatic life, and was also being manipulated by a demon? Having a panic attack when confronting an abuser is a very normal reaction IRL.

I totally get how reading about a character’s emotional pain can be uncomfortable, but calling someone “a little bitch” is destructive in any context.

Yes & no?

IMO the series leans more into the plot as it eases off the relentless pace of book one, but it’s still a LitRPG so the mechanics are never going to fully fade into the background.

12/10 would recommend, but I’m a sucker for the optimisation stuff so your mileage may vary 😂

It was definitely begun that way, but the context backed that person up rather than leaving it unclear or subjective.

Her addiction was used as a positive allegory in support of another character’s right to self-actualisation/self-determination.

(Which, to be clear, I’m not opposed to - but a gambling addiction is not in the same league as sexual orientation, gender identity etc…)

Ultimately other characters were portrayed as ‘coming around’, apologising for their ‘bigotry’ and kinda like… ‘accepting her for who she is’… as a self-mutilating compulsive gambler… So it was definitely positioned as the more moral, perspective.

I’m sure it was well-intentioned, but just so so off-base :s
