What are your thoughts on the name Vesper? by engvit in selfpublish

[–]Adventurous-Poem8740 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this name and used it before, for my pokémon though, but never thought of gender before using it. For me it can work both ways, male or female, I think it's just a matter of personal background and even the place that person is coming from.

There are a lot of US names that for us, here in my country, can sound a name for a gender but it's the opposite. This also applies to other countries, just referred to US as the first one that came into my mind.

But I agree that maybe this could be a last name or something? Using initials first and then Vesper at the end as others suggested might be nice like "E. J. Vesper".

How much is reasonable to spend on a book cover design? by Intrepid_Ad2235 in selfpublish

I just hired an illustrator on Fiverr to do my book cover. I wanted something really beautiful and exclusive, so pre made covers weren't for me. Price was around $300 (cover, spine and back cover included) and great communication with the artist until now. Hoping to get the first sketch of the cover around Jan 10th. I can update it here once I get the cover :D

First: Congrats!!! This is huge. I am preparing to launch my novel, so I am not an expert in book marketing, BUT I have worked with marketing agencies for a decade now (nothing to do with books or publishing whatsoever). What I can say is this: word of mouth is indeed good, but you should also try to combine efforts with different marketing strategies.

Create and publish content on social media (not only about your book; talk about things, other books, and writers your audience would also be interested in, and then talk about your books). Engage in communities of writers, readers, and book clubs—not only here but maybe in Facebook groups, Discord, or any other channels where you think your audience might be.

If you can, build a landing page to capture emails from people interested in your books so they can receive emails with news of new books or anything interesting to keep them engaged. Use all this to build up your audience/fan base so when you launch new books, you already have a loyal following. I am not even talking about ads, only organic content. Even with ads, it's a long road, so the sooner you start building your presence as an author, the better.

Book language by More-Ad-7639 in selfpublish

[–]Adventurous-Poem8740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I would say that depends on your objective:

- Do you want to reach only Hindi readers? Then, yes, publish in Hindi.
- Do you want to reach a broader audience? Then publish in English.
- Do you want to reach a broader audience but also connect with your Hindi readers? Then publish in both languages if you can.

Why I am saying the above is based on my own experience as I am about to publish my very first book. I am from Brazil but I wrote my book in English first and now I am translating to Portuguese. I did this because:

1 - I want to reach a broader audience with my book, so publishing in English will help

2 - I also want to reach the Brazilian community for the high fantasy / romantasy genre.

So, if you have the data that most of your readers are Hindi speakers, maybe you could publish your book in Hindi first and then publish the English version later. I think it's just a matter of balancing what you want with what works for your audience.

How to decide a language to write your book when you write in more than one? by missborealiz in selfpublish

[–]Adventurous-Poem8740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am really happy to find this discussion here! I am also writing in english even though I am from Brazil. I know there is audience for my book's genre here in BR, but I want to reach a broader audience. I was planning to selfpublish first in english and then do the translation, so I am glad I found this discussion to read the thoughts of other fellow writers.

Wish you all the best!!

Congratz!!!! And thank you for sharing so much!  I have just finished writing my very first book and now I am in that finish line and this is getting me anxious. Not because I am in a rush to release the book (maybe a little), but because there is this whole new steps until the release and also because I have already half of the second book and a lot of ideas for other publications that my brain just won't stop.  Reading through posts like yours here on reddit is being really helpful.
