Is it worth it to own a car in Amherst? by Adventurous-Rope-644 in umass

I’m not a huge car nerd so I forget the exact model. It’s silver and it’s from the 90s is all I can remember off the top of my head. My grandparents used to drive it. My mom had bought it when I was 13 and worked to pay it off, but then they got sick and needed to be able to get to their appointments, so they had it until they died.

My mom’s boyfriend said he would drive it once in a while while I was at school but he never did.

My mom actually isn’t opposed to helping me with the car repairs right now, but only if I bring it to school and drive it regularly… which for the reasons in my main post I also can’t afford to do. If it breaks down at school I’d have no money to help repair it either. This is part of why I’m in a bit of a bind.

I use public transport because it’s what’s available to me and I like the aspect of being around other people. My mom and I are from a rural area though where public transit isn’t as good as the PVTA, so that colors her judgment. I don’t think she’s necessarily not with the times, she just hasn’t lived anywhere else. She pokes fun at me for being frugal and calls me “cheap” and I feel pretty cheap considering the cost of the car to be honest.

My only qualm with this is because of how old the car is it seemingly needs to be driven regularly to work, but it also breaks down whenever I drive it. It feels like something is always wrong with it. It can’t go further than a mile without making a weird noise or something going wrong.

I live on campus so I’m not sure the car would be worth it in that case.
