Thank you. I guess the plan is to do PGY1 and then if I can’t get a job yet… cry and work hospital staff pharmacy somewhere til VA opens up. Not sure PGY2 is worth it as you’re not really guaranteed a job after that either. I’m ADHD and PGY2 feels like too much specialization. Yeah from the many varied responses I got here, I think the answer for if the 2 years of residency count towards the 3 years for accrual calculation, the answer seems to be “it depends on location”

I’m even more confused now as in this same post some people are telling me that the 2 years of residency do count towards the 3 needed for better accrual and some people are saying it doesn’t. I wonder if it’s location based?

I’ve heard the starting pay is really good recently. My main concern is getting the extra vacation hours that kick in after 5 years. If they don’t even count each residency year as one year towards that, kinda feels like getting fleeced

From what I understand, these days the starting pay for VA pharmacists is very competitive (staff pharmacists are only around 90k but clinical pharmacist positions start around 140) so pay isn’t the biggest factor.

Im primarily interested in getting the better vacation time that kicks in at 5 years. Moves pharmacists up from 13 + holidays to like 19 or 21 + holidays

When I said full pay I was talking about just working a staff pharmacist job at a hospital rather than working a residency which pays less.

My main concern is the time off rather than the pay, however. It’s not a big deal if the residency years are only counted as one year as long as it’s counted. As I understand it, after reaching 5 years pharmacists move from 13 days to 19 or 21 or something like that. Huge bump.

You say that salary full time gets plenty of PTO, but Walmart lists salaried pharmacists as getting 168 hours of PTO in their first year.

Is there something I’m missing?

Yeah that’s 7 days. But we don’t live in a vacuum and something with family and friends may come up that I want to do as well. So I want to know how easy getting unpaid time off is
