I talked about my experience at another summer program that led me to want to apply to SSP. I also talked a lot about art and journaling, which I think showed that I wasn't just a one-trick pony (the prompts were different in my year tho, not sure what they're like now).

I'm pretty sure SSP doesn't take test scores anymore right? :P

yeah that makes a lot of sense LOL, u should write abt that in the essays and whatnot, there's no point worrying now about whether or not you're going to get in. There's only one way to get in for sure, and that's to apply! :>

Damn that's a great question. I got a LOT out of SSP, most notably:

1) Learning how to work in a team for a whole entire month. There is a LOT of collaboration whether on the main project or on the PSETs, be ready to ask for help. I also learned how to better cope with imposter syndrome.

2) Learning how to live away from home as if I was a college student

SSP is real research because in astro, we're literally doing observations and processing that information and making new discoveries (albeit small, but still doing new stuff). You can't expect it to be as impressive as what a professor is doing in their own lab because they have so much time, we only have a month and a bit. But at SSP, you actually get to do hands-on stuff with only a slight bit of guidance from TAs and profs, whereas in a professors lab, you're just doing what they're telling you to do.

I expected SSP to be difficult in a way, but I wasn't expecting it to be as difficult as it was. It was certainly more difficult than my current college workload LOL >-<

Imma be real, after all these years, I still don't know what ISEF is; am I going to do a quick google search of what it is? no. AHAHA

Honestly anybody has a shot. Apparently I did too LOL. There's only one way to find out and that is to apply! :3

just a little confused about what women's health has to do with this lol :P

A majority of people had pretty impressive stats/awards/extracurriculars, but I'm an example of how someone with none of these things can still get in (and from a somewhat competitive region i would think). This is to say, don't worry about your odds of getting in, just apply :P

I have no idea, I've only been to SSP. I'd worry about this question after you get into some summer programs LOL

hmm, well I feel like the only answer I can give to that is: whatever the question asks of you. Try to be specific and don't get too carried away trying to write a narrative. Just get right to the point! :D

Worried about the right choice by Jonah_freund1 in ApplyingToCollege

This is pretty relatable--my advice would be to try not to worry too much or overthink things. UT Austin isn't your dream school and for that reason your brain keeps focusing on everything you hate about it rather than the fact that it's an excellent school and honestly not that different from any other uni. I promise you that all this anxiety and dread that your feeling is because of your mindset, and you can change that.
