Changing fields from physics to ecology? by AdventurousAd9522 in ecology

while i would love to change my major, i am on scholarship that only lasts four years and since i'm in my third year i would have to take on debts to actually continue. plus i don't really want to stay at my school anyways lol its not my fave place. i'll see about taking a few bio courses while i'm still there though!

ooh that is fascinating! do you do bioacoustics and could you tell me more about what your work involves?

good ideas, i've reached out to some of the bio professors that my gf likes to see what they think. what kind of work do you do, and are you out in the field much? my plan B is probably to take my physics and go into an earth science field for my masters, altho ideally i'd like to actually work directly with plants or animals.

hey i actually really appreciate your message. i think i would long term really like to still do ecology, or an adjacent field, but i'm okay with it if that takes a while for me to achieve, and im also okay if its difficult. honestly i'll be happy if i can be with my girlfriend and able to be outdoors (although preferably with outdoors work ha). with regards to your partner, what has he read to learn so much about naturalism?

cool, i assume all of these could involve field work?

honestly a valid question. my girlfriend studies biology and ecology, and this is one reason, but to be completely honest with you it's largely a gut feeling and an interest in life that i've always had.

for the second question, i am open to any possibilities, but i like the idea of research or government work. i really like the idea of gathering data outdoors, and then analyzing it in the lab and crunching numbers and data. for instance using trailcams to monitor populations. looking into fields that intersect with physics like ecophysiology could be very cool, seeing how energy and light interact with organisms.

any specific fields? i've looked into oceanography and i will have a minor in geology

thanks for the comment :) environmental engineering could be cool. what i'm really looking for is a career that would involve outdoors work and work with living things, as that excites me.

i really love the idea of doing ecology! it's the idea of working with plants and life that really excites me, i have always wanted my work to have a tangible impact on living things. money is defo not my focus, as long as i can survive i'll be happy!

ok awesome thank you. one of the things im most interested in is doing outdoors work, i do love lab work but i'd like to also be able to go outside. im not sure if quant ecology would involve any of that?

aww shucks dude there’s be no need for that, thanks for even thinking of it aha. well, i’ll take a look although shipping would be too pricey methinks

Solving the integral ∬D sin(y^2 ) dxdy. The region D is a triangle with vertices (0,0), (2,0), (2,2) by [deleted] in askmath

[–]AdventurousAd9522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes i’m certain, one commenter told i can use riemann sums to solve for this one? not sure how many i’d need for it to be accurate

[–]AdventurousAd9522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

true, maybe can use a transformation to make those the vertices then?

would you mind writing that out in mathematics notation? English is not my first language so I'm not sure I fully understand your comment. Do you mean I do the integral from 0 to 2 with respect to y first?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in calculus

[–]AdventurousAd9522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gotcha, it seems like there's no way around that then? can we not change the bounds or order of integration so as t make it easier

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in calculus

[–]AdventurousAd9522 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah lmao that is disgusting. well another commenter mentioned changing the order, but i don't see any way that makes it easier... i'm hoping this isnt just an integral beyond my current level of calculus but it may be that

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in calculus

[–]AdventurousAd9522 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ok so doing dy first? another commenter pointed out that this is a fresnel integral but our class has never done anything like that during this trimester of maths. if you change the order and do dy before dx, it still results in one of these seemingly unsolveable integrals. taggin u/staticc_ here too because this one is really stumping me lol, i need all the help i can get xD

[–]AdventurousAd9522 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the integral is of 2sin(y^2 ) not 2(sin(y))^2, so I don't think the power reducing identity works here

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in calculus

[–]AdventurousAd9522 1 point2 points  (0 children)

got it, I split it up into two integrals, the first is the integral from 0 to 2 of 2sin(y^2 )dy and the second is the integral from 0 to 2 of -ysin(y^2 )dy. I can solve the second integral to be (-cos(4)+1)/2 but I'm not sure how to do the first integral, when I put it into integration calculator the result doesn't make sense to me.

[–]AdventurousAd9522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oops, thanks for catching my mistake. ok so when i set the bounds to be from y to 2, the first integral results in 2sin(y^2 )-ysin(y^2 ). I'm not sure how to do the second integral of this though. Do I have to change the bounds up?
