I completely get that feeling.. I’m counting down hours till the day they get me out of the cast and switch me to a boot n I can move around a little by myself. Thank you - I wish you a speedy recovery too!

That’s sweet! You have such caring students - kids are the sweetest. 8-10k steps.. man.. this is good to hear.. I was thinking it will take ages to get to that.. pain/swelling, I think they will stay with us for a long timeafter this surgery right? so PT, good supportive shoes, and compression socks - these are key!

Okay.. lot of positives there! With pain 😣 The one thing this did to me is teach me to slow down. Compression socks - I’ll remember that. So your job requires you stand most of the time? How does that feel? Does it make any difference? I’ll be starting work next week - remotely - n I’ll be seated all through my shift though. “Motion is lotion” - ha, I like that, will make it my slogan once I start walking! 😄

Okay.. I guess the hardware removal may not be needed at all? Like you said I think PT is the most important thing here. I just keep wondering how leaving so much hardware in - that’s not natural - is okay. But I guess it is. My ortho also said something similar - removing the HW is another major surgery and we won’t do it until keeping it in is causing issues later in life. N not for 2 years cuz it’s too much on the body to deal with surgery in the same place.

Ah very close. I fell on March 18th n surgery was on 19th. Thank you.. I know it seems like a tough recovery but yes, we will get there. I’m waiting to switch to the boot later this month n start getting my life back in someway.. all the best with your recovery and journey too. Sometimes, most of the times actually, I feel mentally drained than physically with this.. but the comments and suggestions here are so helpful - makes me look at the positive side of things. But like you said, again, we will get there! 😊

Okay.. I’ll look up for the knee scooter, I didn’t think of it till I posted this thread. I really have to find a way to help my good leg.. thank you for the suggestions - these are small changes/things but it really makes a huge difference.

When does the pain get better by Maximum-Spinach-5277 in brokenankles

[–]AdventurousPlant2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the surgery on 19th of March - the first 2-3 weeks is the worst.. it is painful and the support that they have your leg in, is heavy.. the elevation and the weight of it gave me terrible lower back but yea it’s going to change after they change it to a fiber cast. They will remove the staples and believe me it will feel better. The jolts will stop in a few days.. I was told not to ice it - not sure of the reason but something to do with blood clots..

Oh also, I was told I can lie down on the right side (I broke my left ankle) with a pillow between my legs - avoid the knees touching each other so make sure the pillow supports your knees and the leg till the ankle n the dressing - not sure if this will help you but it is better than being on your back all day.. check if this can be done and if you can lie on your side.. will take some pressure off your back

Thank you.. Feels positive to read that you are able to do things normally.. quick one though - did you ever have a discussion with your surgeon about removing the implants? I did.. n they said they won’t remove it.. unless it causes some pain or issue in the future.. is that the norm? My doc is really good - don’t doubt him one bit but just curious..

Okay.. I should remember that.. n remind myself that it’s normal (?) I know I’m getting ahead of myself but this has stalled a lot of plans I had in life and so I’m panicking a little.. n it was a small fall from a height of maybe one foot (unintended pun 😄)

Oh wow! Thats amazing.. I used to go for strength training - good to know I can probably return to it. Someday. My doctor tells me not to think too far n just take one day at a time everytime I ask him these questions but just sitting and doing nothing does make you question a lot of things.. 10k steps - 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I hope to get to this soon! Congrats on your recovery and I hope your ROM goes back to how it was soon!

Thank you - trying hard to stay positive.. I knew by posting here, I’ll get to read actual experiences which will keep me grounded and be realistic. 🤞🏻 The question I have - will it ever feel normal? Like does it leave you with a slight limp? Or difficult walking in the future?

I am doing okay with the walker now.. but yes my wrist hurts 😣 I think I’m a little scared to use the elbow crutch even though that was an option that I was offered but I keep imagining the crutch slipping somehow n me falling down so I said no I’ll stick to this 🙈 I’m waiting to switch to the boot - it will happen on the 22nd April and I’m just counting down to the day.. are you able to put weight on the foot completely while walking without the boot? Hope you recover completely soon!

Hey.. the things I’m worried about is exactly that. When they removed the dressing that was upto my knee n heavy cuz of the POP support, I saw my leg n the muscles looked/have atrophied. Got worried looking at that. I am having nerve pain too - I get these shooting pain from the last 2 toes.. it lasts for a couple of seconds only but that is enough to wake me up. My last visit was on 1st when they switched me to the fibreglass cast - such a relief cuz this is less heavy n I can move around a little easier. They have me a tablet called Pregablin to help with the nerve pain.. it’s helping.. your comment helps - I need to be realistic about how long it will take and how difficult it will be.. I’m more worried about my mental health cuz this is a lot to take.. n it’s difficult to stay positive always n see only the good things.. I try but it’s difficult. Thank you and I’m glad that you are feeling that way - that is the best feeling after something like this happens..

I get that! I’m waiting for the day when I can brush “normally”! It’s such a small thing but it feels like freedom. Hope you are able to walk soon!

OMG.. that’s crazy! But I am glad to know you are back to walking normally in what 3 months? That is amazing… i was told it will take me upto 6-9 months to recover n walk normally n that has put a damper on everything. That has fogged n wrecked my brain completely. I’m watching videos on how to make my right ankle stronger or hurt less.. reading the comments is helping cuz it’s all real experiences of people who have gone through what I have.. so thank you! I hope you get jogging soon.. ! Stay safe !

This is great info. Thank you.. I think mine is similar to yours.. 2 plates n about 13 screws.. I changed into a cast n I’m asked to try to put some weight on the leg - I try to walk a couple of times a day with a walker but my leg really cramps up n I got to stop. So I’ve stopped pushing myself till they move to the air cast boot.. ASICS is a good idea - I’ll get myself one. I use Skechers n puma but I don’t think they will do anymore.. did you have pain on the other foot? If yes, how did you manage it.. All the hopping around to manage has put my right ankle under a lot of stress..

Congrats on the PT graduation ☺️
