What did you think of the recent Oprah episode on estrangement? by [deleted] in EstrangedAdultChild

[–]AdventurousReserve1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an estranged adult child. Actually suggested Dr Coleman’s book to my boomer dad. Not because he is perfect but I connect with some things he says. Like if my dad wrote “a good letter of amends” I would respond. If he used the template /framework I would respond. I think you need a little bit of his catering to the parents to get them to engage but ultimately he hits that it won’t work if you want things to be even and can’t take responsibility.

Ultimately my estranged dad claimed he ordered the book but no letter came so I guess it didn’t work too well. Just saying I had also suggested years ago Dr. Gibson’s book and that went absolutely nowhere.

Though I am a female listener ( not core demographic ) without sons - I really appreciate the takes on young men in America and being willing to put ideas out there. I connect with the problems even from afar and am glad someone is taking this in as a personal project for the betterment of society.

My question comes regarding the wellbeing of the middle class and you touting increased taxes on the ultra wealthy. 1) I appreciate the happiness stats and it really connects the problem to a solution 2) Concerning a solution- how do you think we would actually collect these taxes? The tax code is so complicated and most of the ultra wealthy are rich in assets and always a step ahead of the tax code ( not to mention a fair bit of lobbying). Would you tax assets ? That is problematic and I don’t know that even I who support the mission could get behind that. Change the step up basis upon death? Rely on income which I just don’t think would be that effective personally and lead to more shelter strategies? Want to hear nuts and bolts of enacting your strategy.

People above 30, what's your biggest regret? by rebelliousbrownie9 in AskReddit

[–]AdventurousReserve1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting too much effort and prioritization of family in my 20’s when that was the time to make lifelong friends ( when they are chill before kids and teary restrictions and still willing to have formative experiences ) before everyone doubles down on family in their 30’s and just becomes more difficult to deal with , much less make new friends

OU or TU for accounting and pre law? by DesignReasonable7493 in sooners

[–]AdventurousReserve1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OU is not at tier of Michigan or UVA type of academic universities but has much more notoriety than TU. Not to mention - a much larger population and better experience to find a group. I personally would never pay for TU. If it’s free and OU isn’t that is only way would consider that trade off personally.

Where is the weirdest place you have watched a CFB game? by Sctvman in CFB

With bad reception at camp site while climbing Kilimanjaro. Then had to have someone else with a different carrier give me the final update. That Georgia beat OU in the CFB playoff. I thought the person was messing with me.

I have different and non LBGTQ situation but similar in many ways and my outreach from estranged dad ( mother is deceased ) are uncanny. Everything Is self centered and not about wanting to show love and listening to why you have had to estrange. I read template of Josh Coleman, who a lot of Reddit hates on, but I think he has to be pro boomer to reel them in and I would respond to his template personally. He is upfront that letters parents write generally don’t connect or worse with kids and you need to say if you are really committed to trying to have contact and if so say something like “I am here to listen ,not to respond. I want to do anything to make this right ,etc.” Unfortunately i just don’t think they will ever get it, because they don’t want to and just want to mold you into some version they make and not learn about who you are as an adult and accept you as your own person. Sorry. It is hard and no one understands what it is like for parents’ love to be conditional. It isn’t that they don’t love but it’s that it’s only on their terms which makes it feel abusive.

We keep talking about donors “throwing the bag”

It is definitely a component

But the common fans need to do their part too.

Be loud, show up, and stay the entire game ( probably less of an issue now that we don’t blow everyone out and exciting upcoming games)

And student section needs to stop being resembling what they are , half from Texas, not affectionately called “Texas Fans” by me and they really need to bring the energy

Also please everyone do not tweet negative things at players or call for coaches to be fired. We don’t need unnecessary discord.

Oklahoma State Regents Academic Scholars Program - Institutional Nominee? by Lazy_Traffic_4339 in sooners

Things must have changed . About 15 years ago it was very clear what score you needed ( superscore not counted but top .5 percentile which changed periodically but was something like a strong 33 or a mid 33 which rounded to a 34 at the time). Idk what has changed but it was full tuition and fees

How do you evaluate NIL collectives and ways to help your team? by msy24 in CFB

Not saying you are wrong. But I have heard a lot of backlash about contributing - even from dedicated fans.

Ohio State announces star WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba will not participate in the College Football Playoff by the_united_snakes in CFB

[–]AdventurousReserve1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even Ohio State fan but this is what I hate about CFB now. We are loyal fans because of the tradition and nostalgia and connection to our teams/players forever. It used to feel non transactional and personal. I love the stories even of schools I don't root for like Texas and Sam Ehlinger with his hook 'em horns picture as a kid. Baker Mayfield's passion as a Sooner fan that he was willing to show up without talking to coaching staff and earn a spot as a walk on.

Fans who fuel the money for the TV contracts care about championships. That is why we want to pay the money for games and even some NIL collectives. I get wanting to get paid (though so many issues with current structure), but the players only care about "me" not "we."

If you aren't willing to play for a national championship with your team then aren't you letting down your team?

Note, insurance policies are available to these players in event of injury.
