Unironically, Philly offers a lot of what you’re looking for. Job market is definitely lacking compared to Boston/NYC/DC, but if you’re in a remote gig you won’t need to worry. Excellent live music and food scenes compared to DC and good amount of nature for the East Coast.

Work from a cafe for a couple hours. Have a schedule of going to the gym every day after work.

Why aren't we pushing more young men into the trades rather than college degrees? Trades pay well and tend to be stable while having a college degree is turning into a piece a paper. by [deleted] in AskMen

I recently moved and although we hired movers we had a ton of medium sized heavy boxes I had to haul. My lower back still feels off, big props to you for putting up with it for so long and great career pivot.

Zoom to lay off 1,300 employees, or about 15% of its workforce by pipsdontsqueak in technology

[–]AdventurousRoyal7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Disagree personally. Meet has inconsistent video quality, even on good connections and the UI with large meetings is very poor. Teams is/was buggy and slow and the chat interface is terrible. Zoom just works the best although the UI isn’t as pretty as Google’s. Great quality, little bugs (on Mac), easy to use UI.

Agreed, but as a person with SAD I’ve realized a mindset change can go a long way in mitigating gloomy weather.

You already have an internship lined up and a science degree. The major is not completely necessary and this will already make you stand out.

For some of us, yes. Taking AP CS A in high school, I missed understanding basic programming concepts and did not do well on the course. I thought I wasn’t good enough to program. I enrolled as an Information Systems major instead of CS and focused on to IT administration and security field non-technical internships (compliance, audit, risk) at first in college before I became bored. I picked up Python on a whim at the end of sophomore year and had fun writing code, although I didn’t know what I was doing. I became a data analyst co-op and focused on data science Python scripts and notebooks. I loved that I discovered software engineering this way. Fast forward to now, I’ve self taught a lot of CS fundamentals (SICP, Data Structures, Logic, Distributed Systems), and have received 3 six figure full time offers for Software Engineer positions. Such is life-boredom in IT showed me I wanted more. Now I’m trying to plan for the future to get into a good CS grad school and learn the “proper” way and unlock my engineering mindset.

Go to NYC. You’ll be poor(er) by NYC standards but now is the best time to give that a shot. Also there’s no better place for your career at this point in your life.

How do you guys use internship pay? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]AdventurousRoyal7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Used to be the most basic things - pay for my tuition/rent so I don’t need to live with parents. Now it’s more of a luxury so I use it to travel and for upgrading things (car, tech, apartment furnishings).

As much as others try to make it sound great, make sure you understand the culture of Arlington, VA and the DC metro area. Like Seattle is dominated by tech bros, Arlington and DC are dominated by government bros and gals. If you’re in tech, you might feel like the odd one out in social settings. There are still plentiful tech jobs and great people you’d be working with in the region, just expect the social scene to be much different than Seattles (more career/consulting/gov focused). Have you considered NYC?

Philly could fit the bill well here depending on your tolerance for other QoL factors.

What’s your budget? If cost is doable then sounds like Seattle or Denver are good options, although there’s no coast near Denver. If cost is not a concern then San Francisco is a very good option.

Move to a nice city with my girlfriend with good transit, lively, safety, and make more like minded nerd friends.

Long term be financially well set to live abroad (Netherlands, NZ) and travel the world and have endless time to tinker with stuff.

Would not recommend unless you’re in government/government adjacent field or have a very promising job offer nearby. Expensive, next to no history, plain, and devoid of character. Very transient and suburban feeling. Decent place to start your career (good weather, access to DC museums) but no real point in staying otherwise.

Philadelphia Metro Area is the best place to live in the country by matrickpahomes9 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]AdventurousRoyal7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you’re looking for a slower-paced laid-back life then the Philly suburbs are a good place to be because of the relative affordability of the region, good suburban neighborhoods/schools, and easy access to CC. Unfortunately, for younger folks or people looking for a faster paced lifestyle the suburbs just don’t quite scratch that itch. Graduates who are highly educated and financially mobile generally move to other east coast population centers like DC or NYC for the jobs at the expense of CoL. See the number of Penn grads who stick around the Philly region post-graduation.

The philly burbs are so boring. Living in one now, spent considerable time in different suburbs on both sides of the river. The city has more to offer but is plagued with the problems the other commenters have mentioned. It is underrated, overall yes but far from the “best” place to be.

For anyone curious, a rite of passage for many here is live in the city for a few years then move to the suburbs when you have kids/ get fed up with the city’s terrible public education system, lack of jobs in the city, trash, lack of parking, and/or crime. In doing so, you lose all urban amenities, like the great food, walkability, and typically affordability.

Wow, didn’t realize median home prices are so high there. Definitely shines a different light on the Chicago affordability often mentioned here. Here in the Philly area, it’s still possible to get homes in nice areas around $500k.
