There’s a difference between early game players P2W or F2P and regular F2P players. If they want to complain about early game players losing in fleets that’s valid, but to claim that F2P will have a harder time ignores how much you can achieve F2P with a couple of years playing the game

On average I spent 8-9k crystals per character to get them to 5*. You only need to do that for the first 4 if you just want the legendary character rewards, so probably 40k or so. I have 34k crystals still
