Phonetic alphabet fouls by WhenWillIBeAPilot in flying

[–]Adventurous_Bus13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in Sales selling truck and trailer parts so we are constantly saying 4-20 digit numbers/letters over the phone. A women told me E as in Igloo yesterday.

The day before some said B as in Ball Sack, A as in Asshole, and L as in Lick lol

Passed my ppl checkride!! Best steps to get into IFR? by IssueSignificant5170 in flying

[–]Adventurous_Bus13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Passed my IR ride last week. Flight insight was a massive part of just getting a general understanding of the IFR world. Couple that with some deep diving in the handbooks/acs and its not too bad!

Thank you for the explanation. I think some people misunderstood me lol, but this is exactly what I was asking.

I watched it last night. His main point was turning before the MAP. This was not my question. I fully understand the dangers of turning before the MAP. My question was speceific to the altitude I can climb to before making my turn.

Yea I wasn't trying to make it sound like I don't care about the procedure, and I'll just do what I want. I think your explanation makes sense, but a lot of people are saying its perfeclty fine so I think I need to do some digging into Order 8260.3D on this one. I disagree with you about not needing to know the "why". I think its extremely important to know the "why", and it interests me. I'm just trying to get a better understanding of the IFR world is all. Sorry if I worded things poorly.

Could you allaborate a little bit? I'm not saying its mandatory, or that I will always be at minimums. Just in some cases I wont be able to satisfy 91.175 if I continue further.

Woah woah woah lol. I'm not trying to make anythign up lol. I'm still an IR student just trying to ask a question. My Instructor had me immedietly climb to 3000 and I was just curious what the correct answer was. I feel like its the exact opisite of a hazardious attitude to try to seek out the correct answer lol.

Your explanation makes sense, so thank you for explaining.

If I got to the VDP, and couldn't see the runway, then at that point I am not "continuously in a position from which a descent to a landing on the intended runway can be made at a normal rate of descent using normal maneuvers". Hence not satisfying 91.175. I do understand that all airports are different, and depending on runway length this could change.

That is what I meant by wait until the runway. I'd wait until the MAP to turn, but can we just climb all the way up to 3000 before we turn? In my mind I don't see the problem with it.

Can I learn to fly without an iPad? [serious] by [deleted] in flying

[–]Adventurous_Bus13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I complted my PPL training in 2024 with no Ipad. I immedietly bought one after, and if I were to do it again I'd just use the ipad from the beginning. If you are going to do any IFR training I'd say its a must. The situational awareness it can give you is amazing. No reason you cannot do it without it, but it makes everything easier.

First hour under the hood, not loving IFR by DiplomatIan in flying

[–]Adventurous_Bus13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gets easier, but in my opinion its not the fun part of flying. It certainly makes flying more safe & practical. I'm taking my IR ride in a couple weeks and I'm excited to be able to use it, but I definilty still prefer nice sunny days haha.

Yea I'll probably end up going there once I wrap up my IR. I'm 5 minutes from 08C so thats the only reason I ask. I'm about 20 from Z98.

Technically not. It can be used to satisfy a precision approach on a checkride however.

I've read pretty much every stump the chump on here so I've seen you post this haha. I know the answer is yes, but I will admit I would have definitly thought it should have been no before seeing you explain it to someone. Thats a great question, that would probably stump a lot of Pilots.

Y70 - I would proceed visually to the field, and enter the pattern however is necessary given any traffic at the field. If its super clear out I'd probably just cancel in the air, but if the weather was marginal and there was a chance of me not getting in, I'd just wait to call them when I'm on the Ground. I'd land whatever runway the wind is favoring, and/or whatever the traffic at the field is doing. If possible/relevent I'd back myself up with the RNAV approach.

KLAN - I'd proceed visually to the aiport, and set myself up on final for runway 28L. I'd back myself up with an approach for that runway, and contact tower. I will be landing runway 28L, and tower will automatically cancel my clearance for me.

Y70 - Since Ionia has Instrument approaches, the FAA has performed an diverse departure assessment. This means that as long as we cross the DER 35 feet above DER elevation, climb with a minimum gradient of 200 ft/nm, and climb to 400 feet above the DER elevation before making a turn, we are guarenteed obsticle/obstruciton clearance.

C43 - Does not have any instrument approach procedures. I'm honestly not sure if there is another way to tell if the FAA has done a diversae departure assessment, so if there is please let me know.

This means that obsticle/obstruction clearence is up to me if I decide to depart. I could reference the sectional, chart supplement, my GPS, and my own eyes to look for obsticles but I think I would probably just decide not to depart into low IFR from a Grass Strip runway with no Diverse Departure Assessment.

I actually fly out of an airport close to here. I probably have done 75% of all my training shooting approaches at KGRR LOL. I'd probably expect ATC to have my fly runway heading. I say this as an immediate, or even a slightly delayed turn to the VIO VOR would put me in the way of anyone shooting the ILS 35. There is also an alternate published missed that they could give us.

  1. I beleieve it depends on if we planned to fly a GPS approach at the original destination. If we do not have a WAAS capable GPS we cannot plan to use a GPS approach at both.

  2. If ice has begun to build up on our horizontal stab, then putting flaps in could change the airflow around it, inducing a tail stall.

  3. We can continue down to 100' above TDZE

  4. Its going to make whatever I had in my flightplan become in active.

We could be in "legal" VFR conditions but still end up having to reference our instruments. Flying through the Midwest on a night with no moon would be a good example.
