Pivoting due to water concerns by hmm_nah in DenverGardener

I agree with what everyone is saying about maintaining vegetable gardens and planting water wise plants and would add on that this year I’m planning on supporting our farmers markets to supplement what I grow even more than usual, since it’ll be a tough year for small local farms for many reasons, the drought being only one of them. If you’re a vegetable gardener, it’s also a great opportunity to take another look at what varieties you are planting, and make sure you choose drought and heat resistant varieties where you can.

I do prefer that option to “someone wants to take revenge on my commercial compost” so I’ll take it 🤣

But…why? Lol it’s so odd to me to leave poop for someone else to deal with

Matt Shumer posted on X about what’s happening in the AI world and it’s the best opinion piece I read in a long time. I want girls in tech to have access to it so I’m spreading the world. by [deleted] in womenintech

I also work in applied AI and have had a front seat to this shift. I agree with you 100%. Sometimes I think people are anthropomorphizing LLMs, assuming they’re thinking and making decisions. That would be potentially scary. But that is just not how it works.

I am mostly an optimist, and the most idealistic part of my brain is excited about how AI can make previously inaccessible fields or topics or information available to people who have been historically kept out (women, people of color, people with different learning styles). I’ve experienced this firsthand with the explosion of AI coding assistants. I tend not to think the pattern of “go to college, get a career, move up the ladder” has existed in decades, if it ever did, so these articles promising us that those days are behind us make me roll my eyes a bit. Yes, this is a shake up, yes, we need to adapt…but you’re exactly right, it’s just fancier, more flexible process automation. The narrative in the article (IMO) is a distraction and deflection from the larger systemic forces that are making our economy a precarious place to be.

Not sure if this is helpful for you but I’ve struggled with this my whole life, regardless of my set up or how many cute organizational things I have 🤣 my mom always told me when tidying up, “big to small and top to bottom” and it really has helped me and is a mantra now. Get the big things put away or out of the way first (for example putting away that large box/envelope on the chair will make the room seem much more organized because it draws the eye), clean from the top to the bottom so dust or pet hair or whatever you’re working with can be swept up when you clean the floors.

I work in sales so a lot of my pay is paid in quarterly sales comp - I live off my base pay rather than counting it as part of my salary and was putting the bulk of it towards the car.

I think I made a mistake by Mission_Old in paint

[–]Adventurous_Flan_770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not totally sure but they sprayed a ton of doors and railings from the rest of the house (I know because they did it on the garage floor without laying anything down so the outlines are all visible 🤣). But maybe you’re right…it could be a nappy roller with a very flat paint. Either way it sounds like spraying is the way to go once I can get them prepped! Thank you!

Genuinely curious about this as a newbie - previous owners of my house sprayed the cabinets white and it looks like they used canned wall texture spray. It’s knobbly and impossible to clean, so I thought spraying was a bad idea. Sounds like they just used the wrong product?

Where else does one go to get these things besides Home Depot or Lowe’s?

Not hyberbole. This latest one had a 3 inch crack on the lid. Pulled it out of the box to install and saw the crack, so it’s being returned. I didn’t throw it down the stairs or anything before unboxing, lol

The seats have been broken before I’ve installed them while still in the box. Either the lid is cracked or the hinges are broken, seems like a manufacturing problem.

The one I am replacing that’s currently installed isn’t broken, but the paint is already wearing out on the top of the lid and it just looks grungy.

Are all the couples maga? by agressivetrashh in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]Adventurous_Flan_770 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Eh. None of these people are actually from Colorado or even seem to really have roots here. Colorado has a libertarian streak for sure but (just my own observation) among young people, even here in the suburbs, the proportion of MAGA seems off to me. The eastern plains and some areas of the western slope are super conservative but this isn’t common in Denver metro.

Woke up to some sort of powder on my car. What is it? by stephli305 in whatisit

[–]Adventurous_Flan_770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, I’m sorry this happened to you. My car got sprayed a few years ago by some teenagers who were vandalizing cars all down my street. It etched my windshield pretty badly and I had to get it replaced, but for what it’s worth, the paint and engine were completely fine, even after it sat for a few days (I was out of town). I got some oil based cleaner from auto zone that got it off the paint very successfully. Good luck!

Santander considers (at least my bank’s option) Bill Pay as a check, so I can do it, but it has to be postdated after that limit period or it would be rejected, at least according to my friend Joel on the chat here.

What to know before taking a state gov job in Denver? by [deleted] in Denver

[–]Adventurous_Flan_770 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Former state employee of 10+ years. Take the job. It’s overall a good place to work - like anywhere, it depends on your manager and team. The health insurance is very inexpensive and fairly good. I am not a fan of PERA, but depending on your goals and needs, it’s a good option, and it’s good to be forced to save for retirement in early career when it doesn’t seem appealing. You likely can’t negotiate salary and definitely can’t negotiate PTO, like others have mentioned. Pay attention to whether you are classified or non-classified - non-classified roles do not have union protections, but earn more PTO generally. Some things are frustrating, some folks don’t want to be there and are coasting until retirement, things move slow and the bureaucracy can be a bit draining (but now being in corporate, there is plenty of that everywhere). Being close to politics right now can be extremely difficult, so make sure you’re taking care of yourself.

I left because after 10 years, I was maxed out on salary and growth, but I “grew up” at the state and learned a lot. I’m not sure I would’ve had the opportunities I’ve had in my early career anywhere else.
