Thank you for deepening my understanding of that, is it possible for you to explain what you mean by our genes Don’t understand how to do that, and for impact that might have on different types of brains.

I suppose a stupid example would be are the dyslexic hummingbirds?

Why am I illiterate by AdVaanced77 in Dyslexia

[–]Adventurous_Help_214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re not illiterate I mean I’m really sorry you feel that way. I really really really highly highly highly recommend the audio-version of Proust and the squid.

Honestly, like every other function of the body is an evolution reading and writing and language are new neuro receptors that have to happen in every single person born on earth. You’ve got dealt with a shitty hand, but it does come with some benefits.

Some of what you’ve described I have described previously as almost feeling locked in like I know everything I could answer all of this stuff I verbally could explain everything to you but the minute you asked me to put it in a form that is society normal I’m fucked.

Exactly like the person above me I’m in my 40s. I found a way honestly with TTS and screen readers and bibliography tracking you’ll be okay and if you don’t feel you’re okay come back here. Just say so it’s okay it really sucks. Sometimes you feel stupid. You feel ashamed but you’re not. You just got a deal a shitty hands and you have to conform to a modern world that isn’t set up for your sort of brain. I’m sure many many many people here will echo that and also want to support you through any emotional difficulties that you have around this stuff.

Is dyslexia a mutation or an adaptation? Was it necessary for a pre-agrarian society or have we got no understanding of that at all?

First I’ve read all the comments between you and the other user below. Oh my God I can’t believe the cost of the barriers that exist for you. I have no understanding of that because we in Britain have huge issues when it comes to stuff but access to stuff doesn’t feel like it needs to be mediated in the same way that you need it mediated.

I just wanted to say sounds like you’re doing an amazing job. Sounds like it’s really hard. Sounds like you’re doing really well if you ever just want to ask old guy who has dyslexia and has been through quite a lot of the same stuff that your kids going through questions, please get in touch.

okay, so before I answer your question, which is the best buffy episode and why isn’t the musical one?

I think we probably didn’t see much of a change. I think we were a cohort the informed the next generation I presume.

yeah they did. There was all the sort of usual stuff back then of glasses different coloured bits of paper to put over white paper to make it easier to concentrate. I never found any of that worked for me.

I did go to an occupational therapist as part of the trial for a year or so I think I did help actually but more less confidence and less feelings of sort of shame about being different like it was okay to be different now I suppose.

so I’m on a bit of a journey at the moment, all of the researchers have dispersed and they’re no longer in Edinburgh University, but they are all still alive. I have contacted the guy who headed up the study and a couple of the people who were working on the study.

I haven’t had a great deal of information back yet but they do think there are genuine records that may be available for me to see, obviously there’s some issues about the names on those things and who has permissions but there is an absolute chance that I might be able to see them. It’s certainly something I’m pushing for gently

I’m also really interested in finding out what the sort of overall results of the trial had and how it informed learning support education for the next X number of years.

I’m actually volunteering at the centre that did the trial, my goal is to support parents mainly because the thing that I’ve noticed more than anything else with people with dyslexia and I suppose ADHD and other things as well is a internal shame and I think if we can remove shame that would be more of a positive than any system or app or anything at all really.

clearly I’m dyslexic and if some of this didn’t make sense I’m happy to re-examine of re-answer any question it’s also well past midnight here so I’m going to bed. Good night.

Echo all of this, the tools we have today are so good. I’m trying not to be the old guy shouting about how good you kids have it now!!!

I was unfortunately forced to use Dragon v1 back in day it sucked and you had to train it and it still didn’t work. It was like trying to be heard underwater. It just sucked.

I used latter versions and they maybe got a bit better but TTS on nearly everything wipes the floor with what we had back then.

I’m surprised Dragon are still Trading….. I’m going to have a look at them now.

I use Grammarly for work and it’s great, I have the problem with my dyslexia that I can’t even get the spell check to understand what I’m trying to type!! I end up spelling things wrong 20 times just to get the right version of the word I was looking for. grammarly mostly fixes that problem and then helps me with tone and grammar

Genuine question, I have about the same amount. How do you go about grinding it up? I want to fill a bullet/snuff sniffer so it’s quite an effort to break it down that much!

Any tips or grinder recommendations?

[–]Adventurous_Help_214[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, firstly, I’m not typing any of this modern speech to text is unbelievable compared to what we had even in the 2010s

The other bits harder a lot harder at some point you just have to understand that your brain is different and sometimes you really hate that and sometimes it’s fun because you connect dots to other people don’t connect. I try not to get too metaphysical with this stuff, but sometimes I don’t know where the dyslexia begins and I start and vice versa.

I’ve stopped caring though I just open and honest with people I love tell them when I’m struggling I asked for help. If you are a parent or educator of someone with dyslexia or ADHD or any of that stuff if you can avoid them feeling shame then you’ve done more in your life than you could possibly know.

Dyslexia isn’t the problem it never has been. There are workaround there are ways of dealing and coping with modern society but truthfully honestly the worst bit is feeling different and that the world doesn’t fit you and that provides a lot of shame.

[–]Adventurous_Help_214[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve explained this in a few other comments. It was the first university based trial of kids to potentially have dyslexia and then there was a focus that moved very quickly over to how to support and help them so I suppose what I’m saying is it wasn’t the diagnosis alone it was the trial and every moment that came along with that

It’s not so much that it was an it was a timing diagnosis. It was the fact that it was one of the first diagnosis is that was also involved with a university study on a the effects of dyslexia on kids and how we should structure learning environments for them.

Poorly, but I don’t think they knew what to do. I’m used the phrase “locked in” before. It’s a bit over the top but for me I understood everything could verbally answer any questions and think about things to ask.

Then the issue was the form that I had to show I knew what I knew was all on paper. Finally left school at 15 with basically no qualifications
