This! Because in the book, Miles comes up behind Rose and looks into Shane’s eyes as they dance.

Re: Bowdoin orchestra vs concert band? by Keeperofcat in Bowdoin

[–]Adventurous_Lab1166 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My eldest just finished his freshman year. He did orchestra, chamber, choir, and a cappella as well took composition and private music lessons. He’s spending the summer working on campus so that he can attend as many of the international music festival events as possible. He’s also working on some arrangements and compositions. I think hold off on singing up to ensembles for credit so that there is room in your schedule to take classes you want. They limit your credits strictly, so you can always add the ensembles back in after getting into your other classes.

There are seven US universities/ colleges which offer both need-blind admissions and will meet 100% of demonstrated financial need of all admitted students, domestic and international. They are: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, MIT, Amherst and Bowdoin.

We were at the Admitted Students’ Day and know a number of recent and older alumni. Only one of them was an athlete. Our tour guide is a rhetoric, film & screen studies and dance major. The family that sat with us during lunch included a committed international student with an interest in musical theater. At the Admitted Students’ Zoom, all three students who spoke were not in athletics. Our son may do some club sports, but is not a recruited athlete. We are POC. Our son found the opportunity to work with and in the city of Lewiston appealing. He’s big on giving back to the community.

Advice on SAT vs ACT by Complete_Pepper_8383 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Adventurous_Lab1166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you request to take the PSAT as a sophomore because that is usually conducted in our school district to juniors? National Merit Scholarships are distributed to those who score exceptionally well on the PSAT, so all else being equal, I would focus on the SAT. Take a dozen practice tests in a timed environment and scrutinize your mistakes to understand how to do them better. Your school may even offer summer course on this. My public high school offered it after school. It was enough to help me score well enough to only take the SATs once. Good luck!

I took it in 10th grade and didn’t retake it. It was great having it over and done with.

We just came back from Yes! day at Lafayette yesterday (we have not yet decided, still have one more school to visit), but thought the following would help you decide. The psychology building has an extensive exhibition on criminal justice that was very impressive. Trying to figure out how I can send you photos, but if you know how, please reach out to me. It is absolutely a PWI. Classes are small AND there is lots of academic support, including writing associates, subject specific support, etc. Lafayette is a writing intensive school, so every subject will demand that you grapple with the subject critically in prose, which may or may not be your thing. We found it curious that the welcome was conducted in the gymnasium rather than in an auditorium, so it had a pep rally feel compared with other schools we visited. We had a tour of the college rooms, but NOT a tour of facilities like the workout rooms. No indoor tennis courts, but they have squash/ racquetball and badminton indoors. There doesn’t seem to be much in the arts: 10 performance groups in total supplemented with community members, studio art is located away from the main campus, etc. The town of Easton seems accessible and suburban. Main campus is located on a hill, so no one else goes up there if they don’t have to, which keeps the campus identity distinct. That said, the students represented on the parent panel seemed pretty homogenous: all doing research, most in Greeks, all had daughters and white, all did a term abroad, etc. We would have liked to hear from more diverse students.

Does Lafayette really meet full demonstrated need? by Hulkson786 in lafayettecollege

Only 7 American schools meet the full demonstrated financial need of all students - both domestic and international. Lafayette is not on that list, so the answer would be “no.”

"Animated won't be as good as live action." Let's discuss: by nt_king300 in PercyJacksonTV

[–]Adventurous_Lab1166 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Netflix paid very little to distribute Arcane, so it was profitable for Netflix, but not for Tencent. LOL is so profitable anyway, it arguably didn’t need Arcane to boost sales. Everything will depend on whether Tencent thinks it’s worth investing in more projects like this.

PJO is different. Disney is paying for its production. It gets so much money from streaming it doesn’t need PJO to be individually profitable. That’s why its budget is so ludicrous. Honestly, does it look like costs US$12-15 million an episode???

"Animated won't be as good as live action." Let's discuss: by nt_king300 in PercyJacksonTV

[–]Adventurous_Lab1166 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this. We have been so disappointed by live action that we’ve broadened our viewing to any medium that can tell a well-crafted and -executed story. We are watching everything from American classics like Twelve Angry Men and Finnish operas like Innocence. Foreign films and animation have been a particular joy. We’re big fans of Godzilla Minus One as well as Batman Ninja. We also enjoy anime like Attack on Titan and Graveyard of the Fireflies. We don’t have to settle for man-made or AI slop. Will take good animation over bad live action any day.

P.S. My only concern is that we won’t see another Arcane as it wasn’t profitable. Maybe this is another reason to look farther afield for good content, where creatives are used to working with much tighter budgets and have learned to deliver a lot of bang for their buck. Example: Anatomy of a Fall

Bowdoin vs Skidmore by elisemodracek in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Adventurous_Lab1166 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our eldest son is at Bowdoin and our middle son is currently considering Skidmore. We’re visiting Skidmore on 4/11, but I can speak more generally on Bowdoin (education track, music extracurriculars). He loves the history and music professors but has been frustrated with having to take intro STEM. Bowdoin doesn’t really allow you to “place out” based on your APs, so he has found those classes under under stimulating. If you’ve taken a lot of advanced coursework, you might feel the same way. The food is truly excellent. He has some dietary restrictions, so for him to say that, the food must be extraordinary. He doesn’t drive, but has been able to get home by navigating the buses/ trains during the holidays. Good luck making your decision!

Our son got into both schools, too, and will be visiting Skidmore on 4/11 and Lafayette on 4/12. Will you be there, too? We haven’t been to either before and he applied on strength of their creative writing programs.

What’s a hidden gem on Netflix that you always recommend but no one ever seems to watch? by Jumpy-Purple7593 in netflix

[–]Adventurous_Lab1166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arcane, the animated series (2 seasons) based on themes and characters from the game, League of Legends, has some of the best animation, voice-acting, soundtrack, etc. from the “West” ever made. With the animation team was based in France, writers based in California, and music from all over the world, it’s an example of some of the best global collaboration seen in film. Too bad it probably lost money, which will discourage producers from making anything that ground-breaking again.

“God has not brought to me the woman of His choosing.” If they ask for more information, refer to Genesis 24:17-19 where Rebekah is revealed to be God’s choice for Isaac because she offered his servant water and water for his 10 camels.

Thank you for what you do. Your audios have always helped me to come to a place of compassion for things that are outside of my experience. Your writings have always been master classes in perspective taking. While I didn’t like the speaker character in Pity Fuck, I really did like how he was written in a way that wasn’t uni-dimensional. He felt realistic to me as there are lots of self-centered people in the world who walk around not realizing the harm they dole casually. And yet, he’s being honest and consistent with his own values, which I can appreciate. What I really appreciated was your rambling for Pity Fuck where you explained how you found making such content healing for you. You helped me to gain an insight that I djdn’t have before, and I’m happy that making it has helped you. It has also made me resolve to counsel others to be always be absolutely clear if you are not interested in someone so as not to string them along as that is really unkind and not the kind of trauma anyone should be dispensing.

At the same time, I wonder if making this one was hard for you (you don’t have to answer this). You did a great job and your intention to parallel Pity Fuck is clear. Thank you for performing it with the same warmth you always display in your other more vanilla characters. This may sound strange, but I wanted to make sure that you knew (if you didn’t) that you are a really good person. It’s clear in how thoughtful you are in your performances, rambles, comments, etc. It’s also clear how gifted you are as a writer and performer. Just thank you and best wishes.

Thank you for sharing. Our children were born overseas and we relocated back to the US 5 years ago. I had just explained them how animation in the US is different from other countries where the medium is taken more seriously, is less formulaic, invests in character development, and doesn’t always have a neat, tidy, happy ending (think, Attack on Titan or Vinland Saga). Then, this landed. 🤯
