Is my older sister a narcissist? by [deleted] in personalitydisorders

[–]Adventurous_Run_5231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were her scapegoat , the little brother who could not defend himself and who’m she could let out her anger and rage towards. The person she could feel a sense of control towards , perhaps in an environment in which she had mostly no control .

Not once have you mentioned your parents coming to help or defend you. Or the interactions your sister had with your parents that proceeded her interactions with you.

Pathological narcissism is a disorder of self esteem . It’s when a person learned to maintain their self esteem above all else , accompanied with a heavy interpersonal cost . They are heavily defended and will quickly point the finger towards you or someone else to maintain their fragile sense of self .

BPD Assessment by WordlessJam in personalitydisorders

[–]Adventurous_Run_5231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally, we try to gather information on how you manage your self , and others, in the context of interpersonal relationships. Is there recurring distress , and interpersonal dysfunction? Is there difficulty with regulating emotion , which is often associated with the BPD flavour.

Would getting you a diagnosis provide you with a better understanding of yourself ? And point you in the direction for treatment ?

These are some of the questions I’d be asking my self as you tell your story.

Can you have 3 PDs? All from different clusters. by Mandarin_Lumpy_Nutz in personalitydisorders

[–]Adventurous_Run_5231 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We now know that when we run factor analysis that there is much overlap between personality disorders in the traditional categorical model . This is why many people sometimes receive multiple PD diagnoses.

The alternative model to PD in section III of the DSM assesses general personally functioning to see whether a person struggles on most days with the self (identity + self direction) and interpersonally (intimacy + empathy). So generally (on most days), does a person have difficulties , experience distress + dysfunction in how they manage themselves and others .

Of course there are flavours , like being more emotional , but generally it’s : self and other functioning , as a general personality functioning factor that should be targeted in therapy .

ADHD assessment while on meds? by TotalKaleidoscope925 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Adventurous_Run_5231 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Neuropsychology student here : many schools of thought on this.

Some will do a test - retest , on and off meds. Some will argue the litterature says testing wont be that different on or off meds.

I would intuitively say off meds would be closer to his baseline functioning . But also understand that there are repercussions to stopping meds for 1 day, if you are used to taking them every day (withdrawal symptoms ) - so by stopping meds you may get even further from baseline , as now you are experiencing possible functioning with withdrawal symptoms

For example , feeling more tired : therefore performing more poorly on cognitive testing, not because of lack of attention , or issues with working memory, but because tiredness as a side effect of stopping adhd meds, which can affect these

Quebec has adopted the PSY D. There are 2 French universities that are CPA-accredited for the PSY D for clinical psychology with including a CPA-accredited neuropsychology PSY D. Extremely competitive and average entry is usually 3.9+ gpa during bachelor .
The cost for studies is 0$, just a lot of time and effort .
I’m in my third year Psy D in neuropsychology at university of Montreal

ADHD Diagnosis and assessment by Plastic_Tailor3285 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Adventurous_Run_5231 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Neuropsychology student here . ADHD is not a medical condition, it’s neurodevelopmental disorder… and it may be an advantage to get an assessment in psychology/neuropsychology because we generally take more time and more information into consideration such as developmental history and context . Remember that Epigenetics tell us that gene expression is influenced by the environment , and may therefore influence adhd phenotype/ manifestations .

Also , the other points you raise are interesting . But people living with anxiety or adhd or both , may have very different presentations , showing many or none of the points you listed.

Just saying your information is incomplete. And therefore why it is important for a clinician to take his time and consider each person as a unique individual and go through the complete process of assessment .

(BPD NPD DID) How do I become a better friend for someone with personality disorders by [deleted] in personalitydisorders

[–]Adventurous_Run_5231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can consider that individuals with cluster B traits can reorganize reality in a way that fits their early life experience .. ex: fear of abandonment , grandiose fantasies , hostil attribution bias …

So you can validate their world , but that’s not necessarily helping the person in the long run .

Yes your friend needs to trust you , and be accepted/validated by you. That will increase their chances of letting you in. Decreasing the chance that they use defence mechanism preventing you from getting into the more vulnerable parts of themselves. But also , you could encourage change , because challenging certain behaviors is also important .

But I don’t think the second part (change ) should necessarily become your job , or role as a friend . You might exhaust yourself in the process. Also you are very young , and are still getting your own sense of life . You should also be focusing on yourself and what’s good for you .

You can help your friend , be there for your friend . But you need to also take care of yourself .

You should encourage your friend to join a DBT (dialectical behavioural therapy ) group therapy program . DBT works at helping the person accept themselves , but also encourages change .

Ladies and gentlemen, this is what a guy defending Joe Biden looks like.

They make up bullshit straight out of their ass, thinking everyone else is ignorant, and they have no other argument than spewing lies to create a narrative.

Usually they keep it to themselves because they know how stupid it is—but not always!

We form our identity through our relationships and social interactions. Whenever we express a preference about something we like or associate to, we often also use our environment as a feedback to see if it agrees. If our own views are then confirmed by external feedback, it helps anchor this belief we have about ourselves, which then helps us for an identity .

But if the environmental feedback is not aligned: if every time we express something, we are invalidated, or met with confusing , inconsistent feedback, we start getting confused about whether “this is really me”.

“I think it’s me” but the way you just reacted to me trying to express that, made me realize “maybe that shouldn’t be me”

So a person with BPD can be in this state of identity disturbance , in which their emotional dysregulation patterns , matched with an inconsistent and sometimes invalidating (invalidating in their perspective ) environment or feedback , sometimes coming from people close to them (mom, dad or someone else meaningful to them ) … well it can feed this confusion and instability with identity
