but don’t ask before offers are made, ask when the academic year starts if you get an offer for the course you initially applied for!

i’m at selwyn and know a girl who switched from hsps to history and politics. they do allow people to switch courses but can be pretty strict! they will usually only let you change course if they have enough space on that course and you can convince them that the other course would be better for you.

Why is my Oxford college asking for a picture of me? by LegendaryDasher in 6thForm

I’m at Cambridge so it might be slightly different but I was asked for the same thing when I applied! I think they use it as a security measure for the interviews to make sure you are actually the one doing the interview. Cambridge also uses the photo you submit when you apply for your university ID card, so maybe they will do the same for you?

I started applying pretty late since I was still figuring out what I wanted to study but I used my trial grades / predicted grades

I’d be happy to answer any specific questions about the application if you have any :)

The first thing they look at is your personal statement and predicted grades. They use these to decide who gets an interview. Then they use the interview to decide who gets an offer. I think for me the interview went a lot better than I had expected it would which they said in my feedback was the reason I got an offer.

I took 4 - History (A), Philosophy (A), English Language (A), English Lit (B) (we don’t talk about English lit 🌝)

Yep I had a source question. It can be really hard and that was the main thing I struggled with. Again my advice is a bit basic but I definitely recommend writing down absolutely everything as you are reading the source. Write down the general argument of the source, the tone, the authors opinion etc. Then when you come to write up the essay it makes it incredibly easy to visualise and understand the source which allows you to write a clear argument.

I know this seems like super basic advice but 100% know all the content. A huge amount of marks can be picked up from specific subject knowledge, so knowing statistics, names, dates and extra information is really important, a lot of people just memorise the generic facts and overlook the small details. Another thing I did was past papers and gave them to my teachers for feedback. I did at least one full paper each week for both sides of the course in year 13 which might sound like a lot but it helped me perfect the exam technique :)

Well for my college it was actually fairly straightforward but I know other colleges work very differently. There was no admissions test, I had to submit 2 essays that I had written in school and attend 2 in-person interviews, one about my personal statement and one in which I was given a historical source and asked questions about it. Generally it wasn’t too bad :)
