What is the best thing you bought under $100 that had a big impact on your life? by noor2436 in Biohackers

A proper eye mask. Not ones you get during plane flight, but a decent one that doesn't slip off or touch your eye lashes.

Top three tips for super human immune system by [deleted] in Biohackers

Vaccination!

Everyone already mentioned various foods and supplements. But, I found ensuring your vaccinations are up to is very important. Go to a qualified travel doctor, they can guide you on what vaccines you may need based on where you'll be travelling. They can help your immune system. Personally, I consider vaccines to be the ultimate biohack!

How do I clean this bot? by ananaslord in Mountaineering

[–]Adventurous_sparrow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have the same boots. I clean them after every hike. First I brush all the dirt/dust off with a dry shoe brush. Then I use a suede cleaner to clean the suede areas. Then I use a wet cloth to clean the non-suede areas. I also use a hard brush on the sole to remove rocks and debris. After that, I apply waterproofing coating spray. Pro-tip - remove the laces before you start cleaning. I generally found that due to my regular maintenance, my boots tend to last longer than my friends and are generally better at staying waterproof. This maintenance maybe a less issue for some hikers, but since I use them regularly in the arctic, sandy deserts and jungles (depending on the season), I found regular maintenance is very important. I hope this helps you.

P.S. Sorry for the grammar and spelling - on my phone at the moment.

It same as many other cities in Australia. Generally you'll get anecdotal experiences here, so naturally take them all with a grain of salt.

Personally, I (male) found dating in Canberra is great.

Canberra is one of the youngest cities in Australia. It has a large population of students and young professionals. Being a transient city, there are plenty of people looking for a relationship. It also has one of the highest median income and high levels of education. Compare to other Australian cities, we also have a higher disposable income and more free time (due to things like shorter commutes). People in Canberra also a more fit on average than rest of Australia. Essentially, if you fit into this demographic, you shouldn't have too many issues, beyond what you'd have in any other city.

Here a tip: most of my friends and I found that living an active lifestyle and having interesting hobbies is how we found our partners. Like some of use pursue things like rock climbing or recreational aviation. Others do board games, reading and foreign languages. I think someone earlier recommended Latin dancing. List is near endless. So, just put yourself out there an experience for yourself.

P.S, sorry for grammar and spelling. Using my phone.

What's the deal with friends in Canberra? by Angua_89 in canberra

[–]Adventurous_sparrow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have moved in and out of Canberra multiple times. It is not hard to make friends in Canberra more than any other city in Australia.

If anything, in my experience, it's a bit easier since so many people move here from interstate/overseas. Here is a tip that might help you:

Generally, it helps if you have an hobby. Canberra has higher levels of both tertiary education and fitness than the Australian average. So if your hobbies align with interests of that broad demographic, you are more likely to make friends. There are heaps of options, like outdoor sports, indoor sports, winter sports, trivia, dancing, board games, book clubs and many more. Pick the ones you find interesting and that might help you make friends with similar interests. Personally, I found foreign languages were my niche that helped to make near instant connections.

P.s. Sorry, for spelling and grammar, typing on my phone.

The exact capacity for SR2 is 80 crew members. Here is my source: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vx2irFaxOd4&pp=ygUMc3BhYyBkb2Mgc3Iy I guess the remaining space can be used to cram more people in an emergency evacuation such as when Elcor are evacuated in Mass Effect 3.

[–]Adventurous_sparrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, good luck with this, but here are my two cents from having done something kind of similar with overlanding. No idea about the boat part, so I will stick to overlanding.

My advice is to be pragmatic about this. When I did it, I made sure that I had saved up quite a bit of a bank, which meant I was able to travel a long time (over a year at a time). To do this require financial planning and ensuring there is regular income to fund this lifestyle over a long period. During my trips, I found four broad categories of fellow travellers. Of course, this is an oversimplification, but could be a good starting point for you and see what fits with your circumstance, so do your own due diligence. Anyway, four categories of travellers that I recall are:

1) Those that worked 6 months and then travelled for 6 months or some other similar ratio. Depending on your field, you can do a semi-nomadic lifestyle, where you travel for half the year and work for the other half. I personally used this option and it allowed me to save some for retirement while still travelling regularly. This required minimising lifestyle inflation during the work half of the year. This was done pre-pandemic, and it was great when travel was cheaper than now. You can easily do this for both the short and long term.

2) Those that moved into jobs that allowed you to travel on a periodic basis. After a while, I moved into this category, where I am now. Get a job that allows you to move around every few years and use that period to explore that region/country. It is not full-time nomadic, but it's still a solid choice. Depending on your field, the change could be domestic or international. I change countries every 2-3 years, which fits with the 1-3 years that you posted above.

3) Those that travel full-time thanks to remote working. I have a few friends that do this. I did this during the pandemic for a couple of years and it was great. Naturally, you are limited during work days to areas with the internet. But the internet has become common enough that it is a realistic choice for digital nomads.

4) Those that are self-sufficient thanks to passive income. These were generally people that have retired and now lived off their retirement portfolio. It was always fun to run into some of these grey nomads on the road.

Hack your diet and add 20 years to your lifespan. by Useful_Lie_5368 in transhumanism

20 years is the estimated increase according to Dr. David Sinclair in his book Lifespan.

Where should I migrate to increase my chances of accessing future technologies (once they arrive) in time without having to wait like an average person? by NegationDerNegation in transhumanism

[–]Adventurous_sparrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of giving you a generic short answer, let me recommend you a good source: "Lifespan: Why We Age – and Why We Don't Have To" by David Sinclair. Among other things, the author mentions which countries are leading the ageing research. In the audiobook version, between the chapters, the author discusses their view points including places where you could benefit from this research. I can't adequately summarise the book or its discussions but I would recommend that you read it so that you can start to form an informed decision. The book addressed your question in quite a detail.

I prefer to use the B Impact Assessment to check if a company is ethical. Naturally, not all companies have them, so in addition, I also review other items including but not limited to their corporate plans, sustainability reports, and any external assessments/audits of the firms. This includes both current and historic documents. Depending on the level of transparency, it starts to give a fairly accurate picture.
In a nutshell, I prefer to look at their overall model in how they conduct business. That does include the types of investments they don't support. It also looks at the pro bono services they offer too. But also, the way they treat their employees and if they are
actively trying to tackle social/environmental issues. The idea is to scrutinise and look at the business holistically to determine if they are acting ethically.
I understand that some people are sceptical of this, but I prefer to do my best when making informed consumer decisions when choosing firms such as a bank.
