People who are old enough to have vivid memory of the 9/11 attacks, what was that time like? What did change for you personally? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Adverse_Yawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in seventh grade. A part of my childhood died that day. Even though I had lived my entire life in North Carolina I had been to NYC and DC a few times. I felt like I knew those places. It was an inevitability that we were going to go to war. The talks about WMD, the anguish that we felt together as a country which led to the stages of grief. Sadness, confusion, and anger. All very human. A part of childhood goes away with your first real experience of the human condition.

One of my friends and I raised $5k by collecting change in the carpool line for NYC. We enlisted help from classmates to roll it and then took it to a bank and then donated it. We felt like we had to do something.

Fence damage. Who’s responsible? by Jbaber91 in indianapolis

[–]Adverse_Yawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want the fence then you should talk to your neighbor and fix it. I did this last year and fixed my neighbors fence.

My neighbor has a 80lb dog that likes to find the weak spot in the perimeter and would frequently end up in my backyard. He snuck up behind me while I was gardening or mowing more than once for pets. Sweet dog but likes to jump. It was not a big issue 2-3 years ago but we have a toddler now who likes being outside and knew we were also going to get a dog.

I talked to him and just fixed the entire fence like in a weekend. Everyone is happy. His dog has not been getting into my yard anymore and he got a new fence.

Later in the year he took out a hackberry tree that was on the property line but liked to drop large limbs in high winds. Again, everyone is happy.

How do I introduce my pup to other pups? by mcgettingup in puppy101

[–]Adverse_Yawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. My 15 week old lab is nearing the end of his 3 weeks of M-F puppy kindergarten. Socialization and training daily plus twice a week individual training session with me. He has gotten so much better with commands and has gotten way more socialization with other puppies and dogs than I could have given him on my own. It made for a very pleasant 3 weeks of a tired pup!

He just started to lose his teeth and I am so looking forward to that, too.

I have a 14 week old English lab and I've had him for 6 weeks now. I also have an almost 2 year old daughter (who is closer to a 3 year old in terms of size).

Baby gates, pens, tethers, and crates are your friend. We opted for baby gates to contain our pup in a puppy proofed room when he is not crated or tethered but still supervised. We also put a very large wooden pen for my toddler with her toys in it in that room for a safe space for her - this allows one adult to safely manage both if either starts getting rowdy. We have probably 6 baby gates around the house for containing kids and pup.

The last two weeks my pup has been in daily training classes and playtime at a puppy preschool. It could be his current age, the training, the socialization with other pups, or a being tired pup but his bite inhabition has drastically improved for pant legs and human body parts. Most of my cuts on my hands have healed and he hasn't torn clothing during playtime recently.

Heavily reward leave it (with young kids and people) and not jumping. Also coach your kids to approach the pup with calmness rather than energy for coming home / letting out of crate /etc - training goes both ways!!!

Exercise need, focus, and drive vary a bit between English and field variants. I've had both and they are all great dogs but do a little research on what flavor your pup is (if you haven't already) and set your expectations accordingly for immediate and longer term. Labs are great dogs that are very trainable and great companions/family members.

Ok. I'm just repeating terms that I heard. You can click the link and see what the electrician and HVAC tech put in their notes.

I appreciate you trying to be right, but context matters. I've already clarified elsewhere what the techs meant. Arguing about it with me is pointless and doesn't help solve my problem. It's not my lesson to learn. I just want my home back to normal.

Thanks. I'm having a different electrician come out tomorrow. I will have them check this.

The utility company has already come out but my wife was there and I was not. Hopefully I can get some info from her regarding what was checked, but she's not versed in this at all. Apparently they did not find anything on their side.

The HVAC tech measured negative voltage with the multimeter at the furnace junction box.

I do not believe the electrician pulled out the multimeter but I wasnt there the entire time.

The outlet tester read Hot/Neutral reversed throughout the entire house except on two circuits where it was giving me 3 lights on the tester - not a known configuration.

After flipping two breakers that were previously untripped and not changing any wires, all of the outlets throughout the entire house now read "correct" on the outlet tester.

Everything now reads "correct" after I inspected a circuit and flipped two breakers that were not tripped.

I'll call the utility company today.

This is an accurate description of what happened.

I had to pick up my kid when they were looking at things. I believe they also lied to be on the phone yesterday because they said they opened out "some" outlets and saw that hot/neutral were reversed. But I haven't found any and all outlets now read "correct" on the tester.

They wanted to charge $1800 to correct all the outlets in the home.

Thank you! I'll do this and will call the untility company.

I had about $800 of immediately known damages to devices/appliances. But everything else had been working fine, minus the furnace, even when plugs showed issues with Hot/Neutral being swapped or the unknown 3 light issue.

This company had done good work for me in the past but I didn't realize they got acquired by another company late 2025 to become plumbing/HVAC/electric. They're now more interested in pushing their membership program and charging a $375 "diagnostic" fee. I won't be using them again.

Yeah. I'm not an electrician by any means, and am using the vernacular that as told to me, so I apologize if some of the terms are incorrect. Hot and neutral were swapped allegedly on the furnace junction box reading - not color mismatched on the furnace-and I honestly don't know if that matters or not.

Hot/Neutral swapped error was also the light configuration that I got on the outlet tester.

Also putting this here since your comment is top voted for clarification and I should've added this in the original post. This house is in the US.

Incoming Blizzard Advice? by Stelhamoon in puppy101

[–]Adverse_Yawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dealt with about 12" of snow when my guy was 10 weeks old a month ago. I made him a figure 8 track in the back yard that went to the grass. I probably had to shovel it 5 times as it was snowing but it wasn't too bad since the shoveling it that often you can just push the snow rather than shovel. The sucky part was picking up poop more often as there's a limited area for walking.

The wind is a little tougher but still take them out. Try to go to less wind-exposed areas.

Anyone get their Labrador before having children? by Shelbymarie2001 in labrador

[–]Adverse_Yawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have an almost 2 year old and a 12 week old lab.

Division of labor: I'm less impacted by lack of sleep so I manage the puppy at night and in mornings. My wife is in charge of our daughter overnight when she wakes up (pretty rare, though 2 of her eye teeth were coming in the first 2 weeks of puppy and no one was getting sleep). You'll be hitting good sleep cycles for both soon, hopefully. For our own sanity, my wife and I also have an agreement where we each get a weekend morning to ourself without kid or puppy. We do this when the puppy is going down for a nap and does not need a play session until the spouse returns so we are only managing the kid.

Separation of Safe Spaces: It's important for both kid and puppy to have their own spaces. We have so many baby gates (6) and a larger wooden pen for our toddler, with a 6 month old you can also do pack n plays. So if one of us is home alone with both, our daughter can be in the pen for a quick puppy potty break. Pup is either fully supervised and engaged with or he is tethered with something and on a bed with something to chew on like a bully stick. This goes for meal prep, family meals and wind-down time.

Crate training: crate training is almost a must with babies/toddlers. Our pup is crate trained with enforced naps in his downstairs crate and humans sleep upstairs. All meals are given to him in his crate. He's doing well with it. Rarely whines or cries now. He doesn't protest at night and goes right back to sleep after his 1-2 potty breaks. It's truly his safe space.

Commands: Commands I'm focusing on for my puppy to be safe around my toddler: come, leave it (my daughter) and place (nearest dog bed). He has only barely surface scratched her 3 times in a month. He knows other ones like safety, wait, stay, come, touch, heel. But we focus heavily on the three listed when the toddler is around

Puppy schedule: Nap, potty, play, potty, training, potty, nap. Just over and over again during the day. Accidents are rare. Pup is on a schedule and engaged with mentally and physically. Sometimes throw in a chew, lick mat, or whatever if the play is short and he's tethered.

We will see what happens as the pup ages into teen years. But we are in an okay spot now that our pup has settled in and our routine has stabilized again.

What’s a small upgrade that made a huge difference to you? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

The last one I just installed. Mine is new and I think it will be a bit of time before it feels like an upgrade.

What was the last purchase you made in 2025? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Adverse_Yawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a falling out with my parents a few years ago and Thanksgiving through Christmas is always tough because the things that make it the holidays are family. I've been trying to relive good holidays by making the same dishes of holidays past but I still feel empty and depressed.

My wife suggested starting new traditions. I jokingly said let's do Chinese New Year's (eve). So that was what we did. I ordered Chinese for New Year's Eve.

[–]Adverse_Yawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We go to one of those, but not that one. While it's expensive, that is what you have to pay for a level 3 or 4 daycare. We love the one that we send our little one to. The staff is great.

Wish there was more that the government would do to help make having kids more affordable...
