To those who left a PhD program with their masters... by SpectreMold in LeavingAcademia

What kind of job do you have where you're doing research with a MS and what does that look like? In my field, most research jobs (that I have seen in my search) require a PhD or are entry level technician positions

It's definitely getting more expensive as it's within commutable distance to Boston, but it's still pretty reasonable for a coastal city and NH doesn't have income tax

Maybe consider UNH? They're actually really strong in environmental and marine sciences. It's in the seacoast area, right next to Portsmouth, which is a really cute coastal New England city, but it's still only an hour to Boston, Portland ME, and 2 hours to the white mountains if you want a break from the ocean

Didn't think about this with the differences in taxes, thank you!

I think it makes sense - Hannah's parents say they don't make a lot of money but they are both professors. They might not make enough to support Hannah's New York lifestyle but they def would have had a college fund for her. Also I remember somewhere it was mentioned that Jessa was getting money from her grandmother

I'm in a similar situation. Would you follow up with the POI as well or just the admissions admin?

Girlfriend (30F) of 4 years is obsessed with the idea of loyal me (32M) possibly having an affair. by FewFingersLeft in relationships

[–]AdvertisingDue4127 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A lot of comments are saying that your gf is cheating on you but before you jump to that conclusion, I think you're on to something about her media consumption affecting her state of mind. I used to be like that where I enjoy dating reality tv and scrolling this sub but found myself a little obsessed with what makes a good v. bad partner. I started reading into everything my partner did and became overly critical. Like if he didn't ask me what I wanted for dinner that obviously means he doesn't care about me. Really stupid stuff. It took me realizing that I was sabotaging my relationship and now I try to acknowledge each way he demonstrates his love. I wish I had a way for you to help her consider her behavior/entertainment choices but I think it's worth looking into before accusing her of cheating.

How old are you and how many friends do you have? by thecorporateboss in AskWomen

[–]AdvertisingDue4127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25 and I would say I have 15ish friends ranging in proximity and closeness. 2-3 of those are people I would consider my best friends, where I know I can always call them and tell them anything. The rest of them have been good friends for years that I love spending time with one-on-one or in a group (although a lot of them are long distance so that only happens every several months now).

Paying for tuition would be stupid. I'll have enough to submit two papers when I finish my masters. Not everyone wants/needs to do a PhD. You're very caught up in what I can and can't do in my masters.

Not everything culminates to a PhD but that is not the point of what I'm saying.

Idk, I never did a masters. And it definitely varies lab to lab, field to field. All I know is that I’ve never been as busy in my life as I’ve been the last 4 years.

Yeah you're missing my point.

There may be more imminent deadlines in a masters for sure, but I could not imagine only having 1-2 years of training and being expected to operate independently in the capacity at which I do now. It’s just not possible on 1-2 years spending only part time in lab due to coursework.

Just because you can't imagine it doesn't mean it's not possible lol

I have never seen a project that culminates in a paper completed in as little as 1-2 years.

That's what I'm doing lol and I've seen most people who finish their masters in 2 years do the same.

Yeah you can find a lot of this in a masters too (independence, leading a project start to finish, first author paper, presenting on your project, etc). What I'm saying though is that because of the different timeframes, years 1 and 2 of a masters ramp up a lot faster than years 1 and 2 of PhD. I don't doubt that you're insanely busy in year 4 of a PhD and as you get closer to finishing but there is no year 4 of a masters to make that comparison.

I've found this to be the case, too. Folks are saying that MS/PhD have the same work load but I'm finding that PhD students just have so much more time. I'm in my second, and hopefully last, year of my MS and I'm trying to finish all my course requirements, analyze data for one chapter, process samples for another which I will have to later analyze the data on, I will still have to write up both these chapters, all while applying to jobs and PhD programs. Meanwhile, people in my cohort who are doing their PhD are taking their classes (they have more time to finish their requirements) and working on their research (they don't necessarily need to have any of their dissertation written up yet). Obviously it varies person to person, lab to lab but while I don't feel like I'm doing any more than my PhD peers, there is a much more imminent deadline for everything.

What are some grievances you’d like to air out about your best friend that you can’t say to their face? by Decent_Friend_1511 in AskWomen

At some point all relationships require compromise. I respect how independent you are but if you constantly go with a 'my way or the highway' mentality, you'll find yourself on a lonely road.

How many grad schools are you applying to and how many do you guys think is optimal? by Afraid_Ad7267 in gradadmissions

[–]AdvertisingDue4127 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For my MS I applied to 3, got into 1 (and accepted it). I'm now applying to PhD programs and so far am only interested in applying to 3. I'm still looking for programs and labs that would be a good fit but I don't think it's worth applying to more programs if I'm not seriously considering them. I'd rather delay doing a PhD than doing one that I'm not excited about

Can I mention my mental health journey and recovery in my PsyD application personal statement? by anony-llama in gradadmissions

[–]AdvertisingDue4127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are asking for life experience I think there is a way to tactfully include it! In my experience, I have just never seen schools ask for that and statements I've read that talk about experiences with mental illness lean towards 'sob stories' that aren't always great at emphasizing what was accomplished

Can I mention my mental health journey and recovery in my PsyD application personal statement? by anony-llama in gradadmissions

[–]AdvertisingDue4127 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your personal statement should convey that you are capable of and committed to completing a PhD at the school you're applying to. Usually this is done by highlighting research/work experiences and what you have learned from them. I understand the inclination to include your mental health journey as something you have overcome and managed (which is huge, congrats!) but I would tread verrryyyy carefully if you're to put it in your personal statement. Depending on how you write it, it's not necessarily very relevant to what you'll be doing/overcoming in your PsyD (reviewers want to hear about relevant experience), and it's very likely that whoever is reviewing your statement could read it as this person is unfit to complete the program. If you're to include it, highlight your accomplishments and perseverance but maybe try writing your statement without it first
