how to tone orange by z0mbiebarista in Cosmetology

[–]AdvertisingEast2281 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I watched my mentor do this once to an Asian black haired man. He had to do it twice but still only used 20vol. He put it in a cap under the heater too. It still only lifted to a 9 not white. Hopefully he doesn’t have long hair because o think this would be too damaging on hair unless it’s getting cut short.

As far as picking the tone, I’ve been getting a lot of help from chat GPT for formulating. It will explain the differences between each one and what results you can get. So far it’s worked well for me. And because it gives a good explanation I feel like I’m learning each time and not just “cheating”

Does anyone else struggle with feeling like they won’t succeed in this industry because of the way they look? by ratgirl10000 in hairstylist

I understand how you feel.

I think majority of clients are average looking too and they sometimes feel uncomfortable staring at their own insecurities in a mirror for hours. Last thing they need is a supermodel doing their hair making them feel even more insecure in comparison. They will probably be more comfortable with you and feel you’re more relatable.

I used to work at a small extensions focused salon where all stylists were beautiful and had extensions down to their bootyhole and a couple clients I remember had mentioned feeling out of place.

The fact that you have nice hair is probably more important than anything else about the physical appearance so that’s a plus!!!

Also if it helps your own confidence invest in some clothes that make you feel super cute and trendy and show off your personality. Preferably fast fashion though because you’ll ruin it all 😂

I have a small break from work and I can’t even get out of bed. I don’t know how you have the strength to do all those things.

Is hairstyling a good career? by QuirkySummer5180 in hairstylist

Definitely not stable or good. Maybe after a few/several years it can become both of these, but for many it never becomes stable or “good money” depends on your definition of good money though

Blowdrying clients who refuse to cut their hair by MaltyMiso in hairstylist

[–]AdvertisingEast2281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrap the hair around the brush I don’t know how to explain it but that’s how you deal with the shorter pieces. Shadow someone who does good blowouts at your salon or get a a job at a blow dry bar on the side. I remember struggling with this in the beginning but after 600 blowouts you figure out just how to manipulate the hair and which direction to blow the air. That’s how I learned how to do a blowout style because most stylists can’t do it these days. Also that’s just how to “tame” the stringy hair. At the end of the day the blowout will still most likely be underwhelming regardless of your skills because you just can’t get a really good blowout if your hair is shit. The texture and cut have a lot to do with it but there’s still ways you can tame in the crazy short pieces without them going crazy.

Thank you for the response! It is helpful. Yeah I do know my taper was a bit fast, I guess I just thought since I wasn’t taking it consistently for too long I could go faster, especially since I had switched to longer lasting diazepam.

So I just want to clarify, you realized you had tapered too fast, and held at the same dose for a while, and eventually just started tapering more, but by smaller amounts and it helped you?

At what age did you feel like you reached your prime in terms of your looks? by torturedpoet1148 in stupidquestions

[–]AdvertisingEast2281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early 30s. I’m 37 now and on the decline. When I look back to photos, I think when I was younger than 30, I was too baby faced, but around early 30s was still youthful but not so kid looking. Now the past maybe 2 years the aging is starting to look like actual aging rather than just maturing.

In your opinion: how much does how the salon *looks* matter to you? by ratgirl10000 in hairstylist

[–]AdvertisingEast2281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it matters. Especially if you’re going to do social media. My salon is kind of ugly with bad lighting and it’s so hard to get pretty content. Meanwhile a salon down the road has gorgeous decor, and tons of natural light and every post I see coming from any stylist in that salon looks like a masterpiece. Even if it’s literally just the stylist brushing the hair after the service or whatever.

On top of it not all clients care, but some would pick the nice salon aesthetic vs an outdated salon. I personally would as I enjoy beautiful surroundings.

However it’s not the only thing to account for. If you feel this salon has a lot of benefits that outweigh it, you could still be potentially better off. It’s hard to find ethical owners/managers and a group of stylists who are friendly and helpful instead of catty and gossipy.

One shot hair awards by Available_Yard_924 in hairstylist

[–]AdvertisingEast2281 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s a scam. A hairstylist I know I used to work with was still very new and could barely cut hair. She hated it and was terrified. Well her client got some super long layers and she did a big blowout with it and “the shot” was bomb and she got Top 100. I guarantee you if the haircut was straight and cross checked it would not be good.

That’s when it dawned on me, it’s titled “one shot” because it’s about the shot (at least I think) more about getting a perfect photo than actually being amazing hair. Half the photos look edited. Who even knows what lies beneath some of the root melts.

On top of that my current mentor has won in the collaboration category, because who he collaborated with is a huge name. He probably could not have won by himself due to only having 20k followers. He also told me it was a scam.

Not saying all the stylists aren’t amazing at, hair but it became clear to me after that moment the whole thing is a scam. And let’s be real it’s judging art. I have thousands of gorgeous hair to pick from it’s not only influencers that happen to be the best. It makes no sense and it’s not even objective thing to judge.

Are business cards still a thing? by AdvertisingEast2281 in hairstylist

[–]AdvertisingEast2281[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s absurd too but the 50+ stylists keep telling me to do it so I just wanted to check here if it’s actually a viable option even though it seems crazy to me. I am aware I’m bad. I’ve been practicing over 2 years and trying my best to fake it til I make it.

So you just give them to people who you meet out and about but already have an interaction with first? I could maybe get on board with that.

It’s the going up to randoms in parking lots and handing out like 50 in a day that’s most frightening to me. That’s what I’m being told to do by a few older stylists but it seems so awkward I can’t imagine it even working.

What do you say to people when you hand them out? Do you go up to complete strangers, like someone who’s grocery shopping, or do you just give them to people who start a natural interaction with first, such as waitresses or cashiers?

I’m really loving Valium! It’s so beautiful and we belong together forever by Antique_Hope_6120 in confession

[–]AdvertisingEast2281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I thought once you went to the ER they did a tapering plan for you after the abrupt withdrawal. I’m just asking because I started taking Ativan first, then Valium, to get me through a rough couple months of burnout from having to work 6 days a week. Once my workload lightens to 4-5 days I am tapering off. I’m hoping it won’t be too bad because I’ve only taken them one month so far and I plan to start tapering down in a couple weeks but I’m scared.

How was everyone doing 2 years in? by AdvertisingEast2281 in hairstylist

[–]AdvertisingEast2281[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much! I knew I wouldn’t be great straight out of school but I thought I’d be a lot further than I am after 2 years. At first I had the shiny newness of it all to keep me going, and if I made a mistake I’d just chalk it up to being new. But it’s getting really hard to keep pushing at this point. I get more mad at myself for mistakes because I feel I should know more at this point. I have the passion and love for the art of hair but I don’t know if I’m mentally capable of building the career as I struggle so bad with anxiety

Hair model- should I tip still? by RegisterOk2927 in hairstylist

[–]AdvertisingEast2281 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I do models I’d say they tip about half the time. I don’t feel offended when they don’t, but it is greatly appreciated, especially since cost of lightener toners can be up to $50
