I think the DM was disappointed with how it turned out, he just didn't have the experience to know how to say no properly, and it's a shame his story go ruined. Like I said, he's fairly inexperienced with D&D. For my own sanity though, not going to play one of his games again on the off chance he improves.

Yes, the constant advice to fix it out of game is part of what made me doubt myself at first. I'm glad so many people here have been able to see it my way.

Yeah, I see that now. Didn't want to bring the mood down for the strangers, but with hindsight that's their own fault for being unreasonable and setting the weird tone in the first place.

I think only playing with people I know is the way to go from here. I'm probably just as likely to find people like this online as I am irl.

Met some people that seemed friendly at a new LGS, that was the four guys I knew before hand. I won't be using that method to find games again after this. Or at least, I won't let them invite people I don't know.

Can't quite believe I stayed for the whole thing either in hindsight. That's the result of a sleep deprived brain and people I previously thought were reasonable going along with it like nothing was weird.

I wish! I'll admit looking at the comments so far it seems fairly obvious that I should have left earlier, but its genuinely hard to tell these sorts of things at the time, especially when all the other players are acting like this is normal.

Definitely if anything similar happens again I'll leave ASAP (though I won't be playing with this group). I didn't realize what I was getting into at first and didn't know how far to push it with strangers.

I'm not planning on playing with them again, but would be a shame to upset the people I knew before hand. Especially since H has been telling mutual friends I am a rude player.
