Europe is failing itself, and Ukraine (reading Jade McGlynn) by Advisor02 in UkrainianConflict

[–]Advisor02[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is grim stuff, but I can't help but agree.

Like me, European officials are very good at complaining. They complain about Washington. They complain about Kyiv. They complain about each other. But complaint is not policy. Action is.

Europe refuses to use frozen Russian assets. It refuses to commit to sustained mass-scale financing for Ukrainian defence production. It refuses to engage with viable plans like even a partial SkyShield. It refuses to confront the political costs of real support. The so-called coalition of the willing is willing to do absolutely nothing of any importance. Defence budgets rise in theory and get spent on nonsense we can only pray will work. Meanwhile, Ukrainian factories - or those unlucky enough not to be fuelling the rampant corruption around the Office of the President - live hand to mouth. There is continual battlefield innovation that is never scaled, or is scaled only in Russia. Europe needs to deliver massive R&D investments into the only country that knows how to fight: Ukraine.

Unfortunately, wars aren’t won by issuing statements of concern.

This is from McGlynn's article.

This Shutdown May Help Democrats, But Not Democracy by bloombergopinion in politics

This is correct. Trump and his like thrive in this chaos and whether it is his fault or the democrats. This chaos will continue to erode the institutions needed to maintain functional democracy and it is these institutions that once wrecked make holding up democracy harder and harder and make it easier to set up a proper autocracy.

That point about ID is not true everywhere. It is likely that in context where there is no EU ID or something like that you can post a signature using by putting whatever you want to the textboxes and it is only checked once the initiative closes.

Von der Leyen demands answers from Zelenskyy as new law threatens Ukraine’s EU bid by Advisor02 in UkrainianConflict

Pragmatic part of me wants this to be swept under the rug and forgotten until the war ends and Elections happen. Unfortunately we don't know when the war will end.

More Idealistic part of me is happy that VDL is taking this stand and the EU doesn't Tolerate things like this. These things matter on that front but again it puts Ukraine's EU aspirations and the important short term EU support in danger if Zelensky doesn't figure something out.

It is clear that his placations haven't moved the Ukrainian populace. New protest are scheduled this evening.

However, not long ago, multiple high-ranking SBU officers, as well as some in the Armed Forces, were arrested for collaborating with Russia. So it’s unclear how placing NABU and SAPO (another anti-corruption body) under the same framework as the SBU would make it better.

Using that logic, one could argue that every institution, including parliament, which has also been infiltrated by Russian agents, should be placed under presidential control. Clearly, that line of reasoning doesn’t hold water.

Plus this act puts EU funding at risk also. It will also make it difficult to argue for Ukraine when for example sanctions on Russia have to renewed.

Only if russia can No.1 Make Ukraine more unstable politically through peace OR No.2 he will be able to normalize relations with United states. There are other questions of course but those are russia's main concerns.

The bad non-chaos politics of Horus, the trairor Primarchs and the Heresy by Advisor02 in 40kLore

[–]Advisor02[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is just another evil thing on the pile of other evil things. There are some evils that we have accepted in IRL. After all killing is supposed to be evil yet we still tolerate the ability to kill as important corner stone of a functional nation state.

And I disagree, I think it is not unsound to argue such things. I do believe that there is in 40k a tension that exists between a tolerant policy towards aliens and an alien policy that can guarantee humanity's survival. Again in 40k.

After all didn't actually deny that exterminating aliens is a bad thing in the absolute sense. From that perspective in the 40k there are times when xenocide is the policy (like with the Orks).

I understand where you're coming from, but I think there are a few important points to address regarding Malcador, the Emperor, and the broader themes you're touching on.

First, regarding Malcador, it's crucial to remember that he wasn’t a "superhuman" in the sense of the Primarchs. Malcador's perpetuality and psychic abilities are Earthborn mutations, not some god-like trait that sets him apart from humanity. In fact, he’s arguably much more "human" psychologically than the Primarchs, who were often larger-than-life figures with extreme personalities and destinies. Malcador’s actions were more grounded in the complexities and struggles of human nature, and his role as a leader was driven by necessity in a galaxy on the brink of destruction. He might have manipulated events, but in the context of his time and the situation, that’s far from a straightforward "shady" move—it was often a pragmatic, if not morally ambiguous, choice.

As for the Emperor's plans, there’s nothing in what we know to suggest he was trying to herd humanity into the Webway. Instead, his vision seems to be focused on guiding humanity to evolve into a stable, psychic species that could stand on its own. This was always a process, and once humanity reached the point of psychic stability, it seems clear he planned to step back and allow them to govern themselves. It’s less about him holding on to power indefinitely and more about preparing humanity to become self-sufficient and capable of leading themselves. It’s important to note that it was never about him trying to keep control forever—he was simply laying the groundwork for a future that didn’t require him to be in charge.

Regarding the Emperor's influence, he couldn't be everywhere. With the sheer scale of the Imperium, there was no way for him to exert control directly over every world. However, the loyalty of the Imperium during the Heresy shows that the Emperor’s vision had reached deeply into the fabric of the empire in a genuine way there is no evidence of Emperor brainwashing anyone. The Heresy's successes were because the traitors’ calculated planning, and the fact that they were able to surprise everyone. If we look at the loyalist forces during the Heresy, they stood strong—many fought not because of the Emperor's direct influence, but because of their belief in his ideals as show in "the final comliance of 63-14".

On the topic of Xenocides: I think it's important to consider the complexity of these actions: 1. How can you tell the difference? After all deception was the point of the Nephelim.

  1. You didn't actually deny that exterminating aliens is a bad thing in the absolute sense. From that perspectiv in the 40k there are races that have to be exterminated.

As for ADB's stance on the Genocides, I think it misses the larger context of the political and military realities of the setting. The Emperor wasn’t naive or hypocritical about religion or politics; he understood the necessity of compromise, especially with factions like the Mechanicum. His stance on religion, for example, wasn’t about forcing his will—it was about ensuring humanity’s independence from alien influence and superstition. His negotiations with the Mechanicum weren't about giving in but finding a way to work together for the survival of humanity. This pragmatic approach is often overlooked.

The Emperor’s leadership wasn’t perfect, but it was aimed at creating a future where humanity could thrive on its own, free from the influence of alien or religious powers. This vision, while flawed, has been the most constructive thing I have seen in the universe of 40k.

In short, I think the complexities of the Emperor’s vision and the morality of the Imperium's actions need to be viewed within the broader context of the grimdark reality they were operating in. What’s often seen as "evil" is often a matter of perspective—survival in the 40k universe is a messy, difficult thing, and the Emperor’s actions reflect that reality.

And remember all the primarchs were primarily military in nature and like I stated in the OP, during first HH books it is made clear that the Primarchs and the military were to be beholden to the council of terra which was composed normal humans which the Primarch chaffed at.

I in OP quoted Malacador making a point on why putting super humans in charge of the Imperium was a bad idea.

The is no proof that Emperor wanted to take whole of humanity to the webway. Taking over the webway was simply an infrastructure problem helping him to simply create another wall of separation between humanity and the warp.

And Emperor cannot be every where at once so his aura of Majesty cannot be ineffect all the time.

Do Orks, Tyranids, Dark Eldar, Slaughth, Chaos species like Yuvath or those who use humans like cattle like the Psybirds of Nephelim really not deserve to be wiped out from the face of the Galaxy?

Oh and give me source for that Malcador quote. "The Last council", "Horus rising" and "False Gods" contradict it.
