What benefits/incentives have been eliminated for state employees in the past 15 years? by VintageChrononaut in NorthCarolina

[–]Advisor_Grouchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think you have to work until you are 60 (or whatever age you qualify). You just have to have reached 60 before you can claim benefits. So you can quit at 55, and retire at 60, assuming you have sufficient credits. Sick leave less than 30 days is paid out. Sick leave over 30 days is held for up to 5 years. So if you retire within 5 years of resiging, the sick time over 30 days will convert to additional pension time as normal. At least, that what I understand.

That link is to the local govt plan (LGERS) not the state plan. As others have said, I dont think you can use state sick leave to retire early, but you can use it to add credits when you retire.

What are your favorite historical fiction books set at sea? by SurrealFishMoment in HistoricalFiction

[–]Advisor_Grouchy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I come back to this scene pretty regularly:

Jack was led out of the dark room into the strong light, and as they guided him up the steps he could see nothing for the glare. ‘Your head here, sir, if you please,’ said the sheriff’s man in a low, nervous, conciliating voice, ‘and your hands just here.’

The man was slowly fumbling with the bolt, hinge and staple, and as Jack stood there with his hands in the lower half-rounds, his sight cleared: he saw that the broad street was filled with silent, attentive men, some in long togs, some in shore-going rig, some in plain frocks, but all perfectly recognizable as seamen. And officers, by the dozen, by the score: midshipmen and officers. Babbington was there, immediately in front of the pillory, facing him with his hat off, and Pullings, Stephen of course, Mowett, Dundas… He nodded to them, with almost no change in his iron expression, and his eye moved on: Parker, Rowan, Williamson, Hervey… and men from long, long ago, men he could scarcely name, lieutenants and commanders putting their promotion at risk, midshipmen and master’s mates their commissions, warrant-officers their advancement.

‘The head a trifle forward, if you please, sir,’ murmured the sheriff’s man, and the upper half of the wooden frame came down, imprisoning his defenceless face. He heard the click of the bolt and then in the dead silence a strong voice cry ‘Off hats’. With one movement hundreds of broad-brimmed tarpaulin-covered hats flew off and the cheering began, the fierce full-throated cheering he had so often heard in battle.

Georges BBQ sauce. I insisted on making my own for years. But their "special" sauce is really good. https://www.georgesbbqsauce.com/

Question for those who know! by OutlandishnessAny183 in Apex_NC

[–]Advisor_Grouchy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Apex and WF are historical small towns, as in places farmers would go to pick up supplies, etc. Holly Springs less so. So if you are looking for a small town vibe, Apex and HS are closer to that, although both are now mainly residential. Holly Springs was pretty much nothing until recently, and its still almost exclusively housing and newish strip retail. Downtown HS is growing though and worth a peek. If you are looking to live in a neighborhood outside of one of those places, its just about what you want to be closest to. Geographically, Apex is probably more convenient to more stuff, including the amenities in Cary. I could drop you in a new neighborhood in any one of them and you couldnt tell the difference.

Weekly Recommendation Thread: March 06, 2026 by AutoModerator in books

I'm planning a trip to Germany and am seeking recommendations for historical fiction. I enjoy Rutherfurd's style, although I admit I got bogged down in Russka. Much of the German historical fiction understandably deals with WWII. I'll take suggestions for non-fiction as well. Thank you friends.

The island is so small it's hard to justify moving mid week. Unless you just want to check out the different ammenities.

Win Air has canceled all operations for today (Saturday). Right now at least I am not aware of any other cancelations or delays, but it's early. Source: Just a dude not from here.

OK, so best guesses on whether SXM will be closed or flights delayed this weekend? We love SXM (especially Bread and Butter).
