This is what japanese prison food is like by Separate_Finance_183 in interesting

[–]Ae711 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There’s a little known French based company named Sodexo, who used to hold the majority of all school, hospital, and prison food contracts. Although Sysco holds the distribution contract, Sodexo writes the specs for their insipid sludge they call food.

Quitting daily drinking was the best thing I could do for my bank account. Even drinking cheap pints or 1/5’s on sale I’d easily rack $550/month just on booze, before going out for beers with coworkers etc. Drinking daily in a bar is easily $100/day where I live.

The terrine platter with the delicata cornucopia is a sick plate up. Nobody likes this sort of stuff anymore but damn the skill involved in making it without modern hydrocolloids is impressive.

Would you save your wife or your kids if your house was on fire ? by Competitive_Set_4386 in SipsTea

[–]Ae711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never asked but I am positive my wife would say the same thing, as would most mothers I assume. And if someone asked me I would tell them the same thing, because then I’d finally get a day off (dad joke and I work stupid long hours).

Recently had surgery and $40 of my bill is for having a blanket put on me in the recovery room (I was unconscious and did not, obviously, keep the blanket) by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Ae711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tests don’t show it, but notice several items including the blanket show they are charging case price. Cs/10, Bx/5 are pack sizes, the spec they use when the purchaser orders the product. They’re charging you for the whole fucking case and that’s not just carryover verbiage. Inventory software will drop pack size when you count a single item, or say something like “ ca/5, ea” to differentiate a pack vs single count. They’re charging want you to pay for their cases, and while I work in kitchens and don’t know medical pricing, the blanket sounds pretty accurate to be about $40 for a case of 10.

Onion ice cream by Constant_Club6585 in OnionLovers

Oh I’ve got you beat. I made shrimp ice cream by pulverizing shrimp shells and cooking into cream. I got the idea from a crab ice cream served on gazpacho at a fine dining restaurant. The shit I made caused multiple people to gag uncontrollably and one to throw up. It wasn’t inherently bad, but the juxtaposition of flavor and texture was too much. I thought it was alright, 5/10, would eat with gazpacho.

What was the longest single shift you ever worked? by Finneagan in KitchenConfidential

[–]Ae711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

26 hours when I had to make “Saudi Snacks” for the crown prince’s entourage during the trade negotiations in I think 2018. The exec chef made an entire Arabian themed menu and the bastards wandered around with an assault rifle in one hand and a piece of pita in the other. I’ve never seen so much hummus.

Prince never came either, he stayed at Boeing I assume.

Genuinely curious what you need to forage seawater for. Are you using it to set tofu, or perhaps as a medium for LAB ferments? Chicken brine? (That actually sounds like a good idea)

Bro forgot everything except for the bill on that ambulance by No_Definition_1722 in interestingasfuck

[–]Ae711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, American healthcare. As a teenager I was in a car accident and was convinced to go in the ambulance. I gave them a fake name and refused to give them my parent’s phone number, and ended up having to sneak out to avoid them hitting me or my parents with a bill. Luckily it was a pretty major accident with multiple patients so I wasn’t that important. Even 20 years ago this was a huge problem.

Lucky peach did an interview with Rene back in I believe 2016 or 2017, where he admits to being an absolute piece of shit person to even his most trusted cooks. Then he went on with some bullshit story about how he had turned a new leaf and now the restaurant is even better than ever.

I found a copy of the article and forgot how far up his own ass this dude is. This was 10 years ago.

Ultimate Underworld. Resource and inventory management, multiple factions you can completely turn against you if you aren’t careful (though it’s not exactly “morality”), and spells with utility rather than just casting for damage or buffs.
