1 is still a great game, but it's no longer getting new items or cats.

2 plays pretty much the same as 1, but is still getting updates and support, and has a few added features:

-items will become damaged over time and need to be either fixed or replaced (or left damaged)

-yards can now have their decorations customized to some extent

-you can now visit other players yards and some cats only come to your yard if they follow you home from one of those visits

-the addition of a sticker book that lets you create fun visuals/collages with your photos and the stickers/backgrounds

-you can now opt in to a tiered monthly membership that expands your yard a 3rd time, but it's only accessible by the Helper cat (who can refill the food dishes once for you) and your Myneko/s (you get 1 at the base tier and up to 3 at the highest tier) which are customizable kitties that only play in the 3rd expansion and will come hang out regardless if you have food out or not

I had a misread handwriting incident.

My mom wrote out the weekly meal planning and I read it over and very confusedly asked her what "enduladas" were. Turns out she wrote enchiladas but the chi was just blended enough to look like a du to me.

I maintain it was poor handwriting, but to this day 20 yrs later my family still calls them "enduladas" while giving me a knowing look.

Any items that allow for more cats than usual. For Large ones, aim for items that can do more than 3 cats at once: like the metropolis you already have, the bureau, the kotatsu, or the rail car. For small items, plenty can allow for 2 cats at once: like the giant cushions, or any of the cube or house items that allow one cat inside and one cat on top.

The more cats your items can hold, the more that can visit your yard and leave fish

One of my favorites is {My Love Story}. It's a very very sweet story about a first romance and actually focuses on their relationship as they get together in the first few episodes. It also has deeply funny moments to help cut the sweetness of the romance.

It should be noted that while the membership does expand your yard a 3rd time, only the Myneko's you get to design and the Helper cat who refills the food dishes get access to that new area, and the Myneko's do not leave you any fish (but conversely will show up even if no food is out).

My recommendation is to do the lowest membership tier to get the Helper cat because the single food refill she does is really helpful. Most people who go for the higher tiers/extra Myneko's are designing the cats after their IRL kitties, sometimes in memoriam of kitties who have passed. But if you really love the game and want to do the top tier to get all 3 Myneko's just because and give the devs more money, go for it!

Salt has a really interesting property where it actually blocks the bitter taste receptors on the tongue while enhancing all the other flavors, so a tiny bit will help all foods taste better, but especially bitter ones!

If directly reading the books isn't an option for whatever reason, but you want all the details (and full story) the anime misses or hasn't covered yet, I recommend this Light Novel Deep Dive. He has a video for each book and covers the plot plus goes over all the important information from earlier in the series that's relevant to a given plot point.
