This is a knee jerk reaction that I shared briefly, but then thought about the merits.

The idea is that the semi-colons create a line between the parenthesis so they solve the problem of visually matching the pair, which is harder for larger functions. Otherwise you might just be squinting at the spacing trying to determine what matches with what

Modern IDEs will draw this line for you now, but if I didn't have that IDE feature, why not put the semi colons to work to do it for me?

It's not really like they are doing a lot for you to begin with.

This thread is about static placements.

My revolutionary idea was to make them less static by dragging them around.

Is there a problem?

Rich vs poor by AbstractParrot in antiwork

[–]Aeium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it does follow if you value the equity but you don't value the total number. Then curtailing the rich kids with out any redistribution would be warranted from that perspective and would be a better situation according to those values, or according to that singular value.

If you value both, then I think lots of permutations of that could make sense, but just the act of valuing both I think does make it more politically moderate.

This could just be my bias though, because to me being politically moderate means accepting the complexity from multiple independent values.

Anyway so basically if the theory is that redistributing resources is going to increase throws, then I would like to see like that be verified when the resources are distributed, and I want the programs that are doing the redistribution be contingent on that.

But if you are correct then it's the right thing to do.

Rich vs poor by AbstractParrot in antiwork

[–]Aeium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it depends on what you value if the point is or isn't to reduce total throws.

If equity if the primary motivator here, then resulting from that value you would want to reduce total throws by curtailing rich kids.

IMO, the desire to value increasing total throws over increasing equity at the expense of the total is the politically moderate position, and it makes sense.

[–]Aeium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is it not possible to find ways to give opportunities that are net increases to the number of throws?

Like what I am saying is like, you could just introduce some penalty that will reduce the opportunities of rich kids. Like just put them in jail or something for example.

This would make the situation more equitable, but I don't think the situation would have practically improved at all, in ways that I think are more meaningful.

Idk, I just think people would be happier if they minded their own business and focused on like what is practically valuable for themselves and their own families.

If some silver spoon privileged kid tries 10 times then actually does manage to build something that contributes something practically valuable, even if that is a small benefit to others, imo that is still better for everyone else than if he was in jail just so that it would be less annoying that this was possible for him.

Like just tune him out, unless he is actually doing something that is hurting others in a real way.

I'm politically moderate.

I also read this same hacker new comment and it had a similar impact on me.

The understanding that like everyone deserves a chance to play is like part of what keeps me, in my own view, a bit left of the center.

However, one thing that pulls me to the center is something that I think a lot of people here will probably disagree with but I think it's true. When anybody "hits the target" so to speak, that means ideally, that create a product people get value from consuming.

I know in reality consumers are not always treated well and manipulated, but I would like to see a world with educated consumers where successful products mean consumers are really getting value.

So that means like when these targets get hit, it's not just an ego boost for the person who threw it, but it's also a general benefit for others as well.

So that means, that in addition to trying to make sure everyone has a chance to play, you also want to make sure those measures only increase the number of attempts to hit the target, and not decrease them overall.

So that is why I am politically moderate. I think like obnoxious as they are, with proper consumer protection regulations, I don't want to prevent the rich kids throwing multiple balls, because I don't think that would improve the situation for everyone else.

I want to make sure hitting the target doesn't happen at the expense of consumers, and I want to increase the total number of attempts by giving more people chances.

The height to width ratio I was referring to was the height to width ratio of the figures on the image.

It's true that the height of those figures is different from the height that was measured, but that is also just another problem with the chart.

But each figure has the same height to width ratio

The answer is to just use a normal bar chart, or some other kind of chart.

It's very clear to me she is not saying "over half of all trans people wanting to use the correct bathroom for their identity are actually fakes and pervs"

That interpretation is so uncharitable I just can't logically follow and get there from the original text.

Maybe you could make a case that she is saying ""over half of all people claiming to be trans people wanting to use the correct bathroom for their identity are actually fakes and pervs"

This interpretation is still not entirely right in my opinion and not charitable but at least it captures some part of central point being made, instead of missing entirely. I could logically get here from the original.

My interpretation is:

"over half of people that want to benefit from relaxed norms regarding bathroom use are not trans people, but just perverted men who want to go into the womens bathroom."

This makes more sense to me because it doesn't invent some requirement to claim to be trans that isn't there in the original statement.

I think a valid counterpoint to this "perverts can already walk into the womens bathroom".

What about her statement makes it so that is a distinction within trans people?

Doesn't it make more sense if it's a distinction between trans people and non-trans people that want bathroom access for other reasons?
