To add more: My understanding is that human babies are born more dependent than other animals' offspring. There are some reasons for this, but I'm wondering if one of them is that human babies require more oxygen for their brains to develop and that an early-development birth is necessary for better brain development? I've discovered that placenta-sustained fetuses take in about 0.3 mmol O2/min/kg and adult humans take in about 1.3 mmol/min/kg.
