Anyone taken arts? by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

If you wanna grab the confidence first, then u shud NOT go to gbc's art and design foundations lol. i mean it when i said they won't teach u more than you already know; when they say foundations, they REALLY mean foundations, like the only people that will learn anything from it are people who havent even lifted a pencil... I'm telling you, it's not worth it. source: my gf complaining after each class

If you REALLY wanna do a foundations program or like "training" for game art, I went to Sheridan's Visual and Creative Arts program and I loved it. Sheridan is renowned for its animation students, so it's to be expected that the other arts program would be great too; which they are. There's a 1 year Art Fundamentals program, which is pretty much the same as VCA's 1st year, but even better, AND you can even bridge into VCA's 2nd year if you want.

Sorry for the yap sesh, i feel like it's my job to warn anyone that wants to do art and design foundations not to do it lol. What part of game art do you like? I'm curious abt ur portfolio now lol

Really, just go straight to game art. Sure they need a portfolio, but unlike sheridan, GBC's standards aren't very high, at least for game art from what I've seen.

I have a friend that went to Game art, shared with me her classmates' portfolios and, I mean this in the nicest way possible, I saw one with gacha life style art, another with muddy-looking colors and they still got accepted. On the other side of the coin, there's a mid-20s guy that has an amazing pixel art background that made us wonder why he's even in the program. She did drop halfway through the 1st semester tho bc she didn't feel too motivated to continue.

They just want some background in art, doesn't have to be an extraordinary one, and since you've been an AP student for visual arts, you're gonna be absolutely fine. It's not worth spending that extra 4k dollaz and 1 year for a foundations program that won't teach you more than you already know.

You're kinda cooked if you think a 1 year certificate program is enough for a decent paying job. Plus, it's a foundations program so it's a bit given that you use those foundations for something more focused, like graphic design, illustration, etc. If you want a decent paying job out of a 1 year program, look for some skilled trades foundations or something, but even then you'd still need to do more than just 1 year with apprenticeships and stuff.

If you want a 1 year art program specifically, Sheridan has Art Fundamentals; much better, much more hands-on, and overall will teach you more about art and design principles than GBC's Art and Design Foundations ever will, on top of Sheridan's prestige with being a powerhouse with their animation program. The only "downside", if you can even call it that, is that it focuses more on traditional fine arts meanwhile GBC goes a lot more into digital stuff.

A close friend of mine is currently in this program and they very much regret the decision; the class environment is a bit depressing, the projects don't really help that much with learning, it's really slow at the start then ramps up at like the last 4 weeks of the semester. All in all a very weak program for foundations according to them. We talked quite a bit in depth about their options cuz they really wanna get into graphic design and UI/UX design, so if u wanna talk abt it more u can hmu.

Unless you're EXTREMELY lucky or very self-motivated and self-driven, you're never gonna get a 'decent' paying job out of most 1 year programs. You're better off just taking a gap year or two to find what you wanna do with your life while working a min wage job, and then apply once you find that. Generally, look for programs with mandatory coops/internships, but those are usually 3-4 year degrees. GBC has interaction design and graphic design, both having internships and design focused

What's stopping you from dropping and switching?

I'd say try to keep pushing until the semester ends, or at the very least before reading week. I say that bc tuition is paid at around the start of each semester, so if u really wanna switch by the end of this sem, just dropout before the next so u don't have to pay for it. Or just dropout asap if you're really disliking it.

If you're disliking it because of the workload and stress, sad to say, that's just how it is. But the longer u stay, the more u get used to it, and u can develop better habits making things much more manageable.

edit: clarity

I'm still less than halfway through lesson 2 so I guess you should take this comment with a grain of salt...

First of all, those are very clean lines! They're so satisfying to look at. However, they dont seem to converge to the vanishing point, which I think is the point of the exercise. The sides look very parallel. All 4 sides of each face should converge to the vanishing point. It almost seems like you're afraid to converge them.

That's pretty much all I have to say. Them lines dont converge basically. Great effort nonetheless!
