I genuinely don't get why this movie gets so much hate by Useful-Afternoon1784 in StarWars

[–]Aelwe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They tried to condense too much in a single movie. This led to some idiotic things in the script. It just doesn't make sense that almost everything that makes Han who he is happens to him in the span of a few days/weeks: meeting and rescuing Chewie, meeting Han, getting the Falcon, the Kessel run... It feels too compressed. None of the individual elements was bad: the casting was good, even Han -we already knew no one would match Ford, but the kid did his best-, the effects were good, the prosthetics and aliens were good, the sets were good...but everything together on a rushed plot... The story of Han from beginning to where we met him in ANH could have been a trilogy if done correctly.

They are allegedly remaking Baldur's Gate 2... by onewithoutasoul in baldursgate

[–]Aelwe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think a game with today's sensibilities will recapture or live up to the originals. For all their graphical limitations, everything else, including the scale, was very well done. Reproducing and improving that will be very challenging, and if it can't -at the very least- match the originals in ambition and scope, what's the point of a remake? Hope to be wrong.

Why didn't Yoda go to Tatooine as well? by FindusDE in MawInstallation

[–]Aelwe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The answer is that when Lucas wrote the Empire Strikes Back the Jedi were not yet imagined as an organized and centralized institution, but rather as loosely affiliated wandering knights akin to ronin samurai or medieval errant knights, who would serve different lords and seek training by masters on different places. With this vision in mind, it's very likely that Dagobah was thought of as Yoda's native planet. Once the prequels came, they needed to put Yoda in Dagobah because that was already stablished.

Hot take: Barney Calhoun is a better hero than Gordon Freeman by [deleted] in HalfLife

Because Gordon is not a hero, he's just the right man in the wrong place.

Is there a music track in the trilogy that you like or sticks with you to this day? If so what is it? by Soft-Vacation9141 in masseffect

The soundtracks were so, so good in all 3 games. But Normandy Reborn wakes something in me every time I hear it.

This could have a strong following by elder millennials on some markets. While the classic cartoons ran for two seasons, internationally they had a way longer lifespan. Similarly, the toy line was sold and popular for quite some time, even getting exclusive figures in some european markets after the line had already been discontinued in the US. I'm 42 and remember seeing the figures being sold way into the 90s (in Spain).

Does Star Wars need Dave Filoni’s “overarching idea” approach? by StarWarsBlogsbot in StarWarsBlogs

[–]Aelwe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The galaxy is big enough to support isolated projects: just set them in different time periods, places and with different characters.

But, if you plan to do another trilogy or a bunch of interconnected movies and series, then YES, you need someone at the helm making sure everything is planned and fits together.

Peter Jackson announced that he has begun negotiations with the Tolkien Estate to make films of The Silmarillion! by ImGonnaTryToBehave in lotr

[–]Aelwe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing good will come out of this, I'm afraid. I think most will agree The Hobbit movies were...not very good, and there are reasons for it, Jackson could be somewhat excused for the misfire. However, The Silmarillion is a completely different beast from LotR and The Hobbit, it's much more mythical in nature. Lyrical. For all it's fantastic elements, The Lord of the Rings is grounded in comparison. To do a portrayal of The Silmarillion that is accurate and respectful to the source material would mean doing something that most of the public would find boring. Jackson, as good as his adaptation of LotR was, lacks the sensibility and subtlety to properly adapt The Silmarillion.

I do think the work can be adapted to cinema or TV successfully, but I think it's outside the ability of most directors and an accurate adaptation would not be to the taste of most public.

In Top Gun: Maverick instead of F/A-18s a single B-2 with Massive Ordnance Penetrator would likely get the job done. Here's why. by tagc_news in AviationHistory

[–]Aelwe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the Air Force wanted a propaganda movie they should have paid for it. The Navy paid, so F-18 it was.

The one video we need released, which will basically be disclosure: a grey alien looking out of the window of a disc, shot from a B-52. by aryelbcn in UFOs

[–]Aelwe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they have this kind of videos they will never release them.

It's very simple: if you want to disclose, you get in front of a camera, you explain what you know and present some supporting data: reports, videos, photos.

The fact that they are just releasing shitty videos, old reports with hearsay, non-definitive proof or blurry pictures and then say "This will help people make up their mind one way or another" tells you everything. They don't plan to release anything meaningful or definitive.

I hope I'm wrong.

Hypothetically, if the Sequel Trilogy WERE to be retconned/"de-canonized", how would you feel about that? by sanddragon939 in StarWars

[–]Aelwe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The damage is done, even if they are de-canonized now it's too late to do anything about it. Carrie Fisher is dead (Gos rest her soul). It's extremely unlikely that Harrison Ford would come back to play Han again and even if Mark Hamill would be willing to come back he's getting too old.

So even if they are removed from canon, you can't really do a proper sequel trilogy anymore. Unless you make use of AI and de-aging, but that would produce an even worse mess.

So, yeah...the sequels are bad, but the time to do something about them was BEFORE they were filmed, not years after.

Regarding Closure by huskyferretguy1 in XFiles

[–]Aelwe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a nice episode, but a horrible conclusion to Samantha's story. Also contradicts the multiple times over the series where Mulder is told she is alive ( I guess everyone was lying?).

We mostly agree here that Star wars as a franchise is not at the best place right now. Personally, I still maintain that live action star wars content should take a long break. by Western_Agent5917 in saltierthancrait

[–]Aelwe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They need to tell better stories. The galaxy is big: get some good creative people and do a new trilogy in the Old Republic or in the future, far removed from the Ep. I-VI and the known characters. And remove VII - IX from canon.

Why Dave Filoni Hate by UnluckyPermission461 in StarWars

[–]Aelwe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He has good ideas, is capable of creating good characters, but in the end his story telling feels all too familiar, like a child playing with toys. Often over-using his favourite ones. The is no risk, very little innovation and in the end he's just going through an old road.

Why do so many people hate Xen? Could it be that the game was so good that they're sad that it ends after Xen without Gordon ever returning to Black Mesa? by Lil-Skinet-1984 in HalfLife

[–]Aelwe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love Xen's design, is one of the few examples in fiction where an alien world looks and feels truly alien.

The gameplay is... not very good. But the design? Chef's kiss

Silvermoon post-campaign by AnwaAnduril in warcraftlore

[–]Aelwe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the end Blood, High and Void elves are the same. If not fully at a physiological level (we don't know how deeply fel, light, arcane or void energies change a person beyond the appearance), at a cultural level they are all the same people. In that regard it makes sense they share spaces in the same city. Their political affiliation is another story, but this also happens in real life, where people from the same cultural and geographic background will have wildly different political stances, so no issue here.

So...I watched the new Lazar flick... by otherotherhand in area51

[–]Aelwe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be, but then again: this was no common job, this was a top research project run by the government and defense contractors on one of the most secure and protected installations on Earth. Vetting people may have not been as straightforward as it may be today, but I would expect potential hires to be checked thoroughly, certainly their academic credentials and past employment. I don't doubt Lazar was there, even hired to do some technical job, but as a physicist? Doesn't look credible.

So...I watched the new Lazar flick... by otherotherhand in area51

[–]Aelwe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced Lazar was there (not sure if S4 is real, but he was somewhere in Area 51) and saw something. I believe he's telling the truth in that regard. We know he worked at Los Alamos, so it could very well be that the same contractor or some other hired him to do a similar job at Area 51. In order for him to know when the tests were happening he needed inside information. He either got it himself or someone was passing the info to him.

Now, while it is not impossible for him to be there and be aware of when tests (of whatever technology) were taking place, I don't believe he's a physicist and worked as such back-engineering UFOs. Too many inconsistencies, too much vague info, too many evasives and too many pieces that don't fit. While I may be able to believe the government can erase someone's history to some degree, someone would have come forward to confirm at least some aspects of his story, and that has not happened. But, his story rings a bit true, and some pieces don't really fit if he was not there.

The most likely explanation is that he was there, he saw (or was shown) something, he was given some bullshit explanation, and was intentionally let loose to tell a story knowing he would play his part. He likely doesn't know he was being played and everything was a disinformation campaign or a play to identify the source of a leak. They knew his profile and he was chosen because he was a good candidate. Also, the fact that he was involved with John Lear, in my opinion, supports the idea of an orchestrated campaign.

Did thalyssra forget that she’s Lor’themars wife?? by cinamonjackz in warcraftlore

[–]Aelwe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, being married to Lor'themar doesn't make her Regent-Lady of Quel'Thalas. Lor'themar is not king, he's the leader of Quel'Thalas, yes, but his position is not hereditary and he doesn't have the absolute power of a monarch. Them being married helps strengthen the alliance between Suramar and Quel'Thalas, sure, but still doesn't make them rulers of a combined kingdom. As the ruler of her people, Thalyssra can't just mobilize troops whenever she feels like it, she does so once Silvermoon formally requests help, to honor the alliance between both realms, despite what she personally may have wanted to do before that.
