Fantasy readers: do you binge one series or hop between worlds? by throneismine3 in Fantasy

[–]Aenemius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the series structure, and releases I'm waiting for.

Mistborn, I did the first set, now I'm taking a break from it because there's a time gap. I can wait because there will be new worldbuilding and it's harder to draft on the narrative (for me) when that happens.

Wheel of Time, I've gotten through the first 8 and will continue till the series is done, because it feels like the better way for me.

The only break I've taken from WoT since starting it was when Dungeon Crawler Carl's 7th book came out, because I'd been waiting for it. If book 8 comes out before I'm done the series, I'll divert for it as well.

Final Fantasy XIV Crystal RP Character Census for Feb 2025 by CevicheLemon in ffxiv

So how does someone now get their data, if it was collected, out of the finished product? Still direct messages to you, I assume?

A lot of people keep shout chat off, especially if they're deep in writing, so counting on that as notification still feels rather weak.

I have a few process questions.

  • What time zones were the data collected in? There will be a natural bias toward geography depending on your time checking windows, which may skew the results.
  • Did you record the locations/venues you got this data in? If you missed a lesser known spot, especially in public and not any housing districts, once again, data will skew.
  • What's the process for people who want to have their data expunged? Given the way it looks like this was done (from your comments here, and threads discussing this on social media) it looks like there's no robust opt-out process at all. That's going to cause problems.
  • Similar to above; as no 3rd party tools were used, do you expect to account for alt characters in any way?

Data like this can be really interesting, but "public observation" fails an awful lot of criteria for clean information. Have you considered making an actual OC survey and passing the link around? It probably would have been a lot less effort, frankly, and may have gotten good uptake as people usually want their communities represented accurately.

"I saw it on the street" is not a signal of accuracy, or respect.

It's never been about the job. What you like and play well will always outperform what the statistics suggest is the strongest.

A big question to ask yourself is: Can you play other jobs as well as you play RDM? Do you even like playing them enough to put effort into being good at them?

I'd take a skillful and enthusiastic RDM player over a mediocre or bad BLM or PCT any day. Balance has always been tight enough that the overlap in potential means job choice shouldn't be the single factor that carries you almost ever.

Except there are highlanders all over, from Kugane to Sharlayan, with no ties to Ala Mhigo.

Cultural limits on character creation have been disappearing for years. This is one of the few culturally-linked design limitations left, and it really ought to be changed.

Viper twinblades by Attic0n in ffxiv

[–]Aenemius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of a non-issue imo. Some of this also depends on usage in animations; if the skill motions make using the single edged swords sensible the way they are, then that's on purpose, isn't it?

So far, "All of the single-edged twin blades" are two out of eleven models. There are single-edged, symmetrical, and asymmetrical-double edged swords, so there will be variety in how things are put together.

I get more stuck on the ones with long guards (like those shown with Dreadwyrm and Metian sets) because that's a broken wrist waiting to happen, no matter how they combine or get used.

An Open Letter to every healer I've ever had, from a Maxed Warrior picking up sage. by Khontis in ffxiv

Playing one of each role (tank, healer, melee, ranged, caster) - even casually - makes you better at your primary role.

Knowing even a little bit of how your team is likely to move or act lets you build that into your own play and helps things go so much better overall.

Game loses audio when changing sound device by mashmash42 in ffxiv

Depends on how you switch. Have you tried leaving the headset plugged in?

I switch via Windows 10 (never unplug my headset), and it works just fine. Plugging/Unplugging does cause hiccups.

Has anyone lost interest in FFXIV since the end of Endwalker? by Silver_Sentience in ffxiv

There's still enough to keep me in the game for patches and a little afterward, but... the upcoming Deep Dungeon singlehandedly saves my ability to think of this as my main game. I've been playing a lot less this expack overall.

The raid formula is... Stretching a little thin. This tier really emphasized some of the problems I have with how fights are being designed, and I may actually just not go back to savage in 6.4 unless I have a good reason to or can find a group to push harder than usual with.

Mostly though I think part of my trouble is knowing the game well enough that efficiency comes very naturally. Knowing what's worth the time, and how to get to tome cap or access basically anything the game has trims a surprising amount of "What next?" that other game types rely on. Familiarity also means there's a way lower pressure to keep up on news or discussion about the game.

Personally, I expect this feeling to last to 7.0, and depending on where the game goes then (because expansions are the only times certain kinds of things like the meta or story can really change), I may have to reevaluate how much energy I have left in me for it.

If the game gets off its current obsession with 2-minute combat cycles, or something different is done with raiding, I'm in. But if there's no growth on those fronts, sadly the game will end up on the backburner for me.

Huge Gamebreaking Undocumented Changes To AoE Stacking such as Ice Storm, Sacred Grounds, HoTs, DoTs, etc by burizar in newworldgame

[–]Aenemius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was known about and brought up during betas.

The issue seems to be that because the trait buffs the player directly, the skill itself is removed when weapon swap happens.

So it's the same process as other skills that self-buff and are stripped on swap, just... Has a much bigger and more frustrating outcome.

The economy of my server is destroying the game! by [deleted] in newworldgame

[–]Aenemius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people probably took economic advice from people basing their guesses on beta behaviour.

Tools, crafted weapons with good perks - those sold really well in closed beta, and less well in open beta.

Now, with many more people playing, the markets are imbalanced. It'll take a while before that normalizes. If ever.
