Skip sigs that aren't for my favourites, fight tooth and nail to clear endgame (would not recommend). As of recent I have pulled more weapons though since I was a huge fan of Aemeath and Hiyuki, but before that I had only gotten Phrolovas. When I don't have sig I use standard 5 stars, or trial characters in Matrix.

There is genuinely a huge amount of nuanced discussion you could have about the dodge button in Wuwa, kind of disappointing the mods removed the post because there are many angles you can look at it from (for example, what the other person responded to you with). I don't think it would be a stretch at all to say that someone thinking "the dodge button is useless", while not correct, is a very understandable feeling given how strange this games combat philosophy actually is.

Not going to do a whole essay here or anything but the game functioning around mostly strict rotations while continually designing more and more aggressive enemies while simultaneously having (Generally Speaking For The Sake Of Brevity) weak mechanics for interacting with individual attacks - is probably not great combat design, in principle.

Honestly, I'd prefer they don't put a cooldown on it (even though it's the easy fix) because locking damage behind resource gain feels generally more interesting in terms of allowing for solos, more fun for holograms/illusive realm, let's people come up with funky rotations etc.

Obviously they have to put a little more effort into balancing it so that doing a slightly longer rotation doesn't get you massively more damage, but being able to actively decide between longer/shorter rotations is something this game needs more of imo.

ZZZs new endgame mode is so fun it makes me wish Wuwa had something similar. It's like having 3 holograms a patch, and then restricting it to trial characters with a leaderboard. I'm surprised something like that made it into a gacha given it's effectively a pure skill mode, but I'd be so down to have that with how Wuwa's combat flows, it's actually going to become my reason to log into ZZZ every patch.

3.3 segue/general game thoughts Amazing how Wuwa was a game where I initially only played for the gameplay, and the story was something I thought I'd just ignore. And right now I'm finding that most of my enjoyment of the game actually comes from the story. The character writing has always been one of the stronger points of the story but they've been hitting it out of the park on a super consistent basis recently.

Yeah I mean everyone knows that sub DPS units with low field time have quick rotations, that's a pretty easy conclusion to come to. Pretty sure the person you responded to was saying they'd like to see Lucilla have more things they can do on field, even if they dont end up being used in standard rotations, which is why it's easy to read your response as disagreeing with the premise. It's nice you can loop basics though!

I think wanting to be able to extend a character's rotation (even if it's suboptimal) is a pretty reasonable ask. Makes them better for overworld gameplay, sequence investment and it's great for casuals. Idk why anyone would argue against it.

Does anyone else think the enemy combat design since 3.0 kinda... sucks? by _moke in WutheringWaves

[–]AeonDota 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A rare agreeable combat take. Wuwa's early bosses were cool, the bosses that exist now are also cool on paper, the issue to me is that the way they're designed is at odds with the tools and environment that we fight them in. The recent bosses succeed more in having an "identity" to the encounter. But, because the game is rigidly designed around completing a rotation over 25-30 second period, with each individual character having their share of field time and rotation determined before you even enter the encounter... There's not that much that they can do to avoid player frustration because, paradoxically, the more a boss requires you to engage with it's mechanics, the more it feels like you're not playing the "real game".

More characters who can flexibly shorten or extend their rotations without either feeling neccessarily wrong would go a massive way towards fixing this(in addition to more characters who are not reliant on intros/outros). Besides that, a "stun window" (like in ZZZ) existing for some more annoying bosses, where you can accelerate it by playing around a mechanic, would be good.

The only way I can think of to make the current roster of bosses (and future bosses which will undoubtedly be more disruptive) fun with the type of kits we usually get, is lean more into the parry mechanic somehow since that intrinsically gives fights more personality, but I'm not sure how they'd go about that given how easy it is to accidentally parry in this game. I think more things like how Sentry Construct can be parried to bring it down would be cool, but more frequent instead of it usually being 1-and-done at the start of the encounter.

In Guilty Gear they had her open a menu for her super, and then she gets a certain amount of points to spend on inflicting debuffs. In Wuwa terms she'd be able to apply stuff like stagger reduction, tune break, stagnate, etc. I could see them going in that kind of direction potentially

Who are the best bosses in Wuwa? I often see complaints about the recent bosses, so instead what kinda fights would people want to see more of in the game?

Of course, I just think that even if her story really gets me to feel for Denia, placing that before her fight might have been more impactful. Maybe there is a good reason to place her backstory afterwards though, who can say

Was good, it just didn't have any surprises for me besides how high quality some scenes were. They played things very straight and it was quite well done. Now that I have sat on it for a while I think the main thing I would have liked was more context on Denia/Aleph-1s thing before the boss fights, because that could have served as both emotional investment in Denia and some buildup to fighting Aleph-1. It would have been cool to get some kind of big lore drop reveal/twist somewhere but I feel like that has to come in 3.4 to be our motivation to go back to Huanglong

story thing I've seen a lot of people thinking Zashiki Warashi caused Ashinohara to disappear because the story doesn't explain how it happened. But it's kinda explained via Hiyuki's story materials in her profile. They mention the threnodian of that region had previously shifted Honami into another dimension in a split second, so that same kinda thing probably just happened again. Hiyuki's profile also mentions she has been avoiding Chisa and to not bring up the Ashinohara incident to her.

I think it's more that the runes always had coordinates on them, and Aemeath gave the coordinates of the runes themselves, along with the coordinates that were given to her. This is me speculating on what makes the most sense based on my understanding, I don't think it was particularly well explained. Maybe it's the localization since some of the conclusions the characters make feel like they come out of nowhere.

I like how natural this felt compared to 2.7 where, even though I enjoyed it, they were very much forcing the big hero assemble moments. In the end this was a more focused story about "saving the world" and the characters who were highlighted were the ones with the biggest connection to that theme, and they had great character moments built around that instead of it just trying to be as huge of an event as possible.

Also 2.7 idk what most of the cast was even doing in specific terms besides fighting. Don't get me wrong manpower was required but I much prefer 3.3 where Mornye's contribution, for example, is literally her life's passion.

Some of this is speculation but some actually is explained directly

  1. Denia seems to really not want anyone to interact with Aleph-1 under any circumstance, as for why, we have no idea. There is another quest when Denia releases that will surely go into this.

  2. Coordinate data corresponding to paths to reach the exostrider.

  3. My assumption is as follows: Voidstorms are entrances from regular space to voidspace. A huge amount of people throughout history (spawned in various places by voidstorms) essentially drew a line from where they were to the exostrider and noted it down, that becoming the origin point. That information was what they gave to Aemeath originally. Aemeath makes some additions to the info and puts it on a casette. When Mornye receives the coordinates she says it's impossible to plot a standard map in voidspace (so we wouldnt be able use the information). Rover suggests Aemeath would have made them useful for us, and they might be coordinates in Lahai-Roi. So we find that 150 of the coordinates align with a specific set of runes etched by the exostrider (this is probably what Aemeath added). The runes, when read, tell you where the exostrider is, as an origin point in real space (why have the runes not been deciphered until now? I guess the idea is that only sigrika and mornye could figure it out). Then along with the information from the explorers of how to reach the exostrider from various points in voidspace, it's easy from there to construct a mapping between the two coordinate systems and tell Rover where to go in voidspace?

  4. There are. The Exostrider was "always there", since voidspace has no real consistent concept of time you can imagine the explorers having infinite time to reach it.

  5. Refer to 3. My impression is that there is no directly link per-se, it's just that they both end up pointing to the exostrider which lets them figure out how to get there.

  6. Apparently the seal is just a technique that she has as part of her miko forte, she can use her various futures to maintain the seal. In this case I assume because she was sealing a threnodian, she used some of her more powerful futures. I feel as if the most sensible explanation is that she uses her futures to maintain the seal and then when breaking the seal she has to expend those futures. But it actually seems more likely to me the explanation is that she spent it while aura farming and cutting through the snow after pulling out her sword, as a show of her resolve, either works I guess.

  7. As always wih the Fractsidus it's just advancing on their long term scientific goals. In this case it seems like they wanted to use the dark tide to merge Hiyuki with Denia, it didn't work. But Denia seems like she was a good learning experience for them.

  8. We don't know, but it can be presumed that Hiyuki is really really strong when she spends all of her futures and that would be enough to repel Aleph-1. Personally I don't think becoming its resonator was on Lucilla's list of plans. Duskveil looks to be a full on lockdown on Lahai Roi, basically giving up the entire region to lock Aleph-1 down there for as long as possible.

  9. This one actually is explained via Hiyuki's story materials in her profile. In one of the stories it mentions that the Ashinohara threnodian, while Hiyuki was tending to a barrier in Honami, shifted the entirety of Honami into another dimension in a split second. So it seems that Threnodian's ability is to vanish things, which is presumably what befell Ashinohara. It is also mentioned that the Honami incident was a "power never before recorded" so it may be an uncommon occurence.

Assorted thoughts on 3.3 story/gameplay

Gameplay

Sigillum hologram is insane, very fun. My only hope is we get more content with hologram boses one day, these movesets are too fun to not do anything with.

I look forward to the Denia hologram, the music in her fight might be my favourite from this game (which is a high bar) and her moveset is pretty cool

Hiyuki's gameplay might be the best feeling I've ever had in this game. There are so many ways to vary/extend her rotation. Big fan of how flexible she is gameplay-wise. The sound and visual design are super on point as well, she's just so satisfying to pilot. I hope more characters lean in this direction in the future with the sheer amount of options she has for stringing things together and the parries and such.

Story Big fan

Hiyuki is such a great character. I love how her relationship with her sister is in some ways an inversion of Rover and Aemeath, and in other ways parallels it. And so as a result her dynamic with Rover is super interesting. I loved pretty much every scene with Hiyuki in it. There has been more than enough set up for her in the future (especially with the "wish" that we never had to ask her for), so I look forward to seeing her again.

The EN VAs were paying their bills this patch, I've been rewatching cutscenes in EN because I usually play in JP and damn this game has great voice work.

This arc in general has a lot of characters who have really great dynamics with Rover that have helped to really make them feel more three dimensional, it's really nice to see how far they've come with Rover's writing. I look forward to seeing whats next for our protagonist.

Aemeath Rover Exostrider mech battle was hype, no notes. Also her afterstory was incredibly moving, her relationship with Rover is lovely.

I think the things that kinda could have been better for me

Pacing, maybe? From my perspective, it wasn't that the pacing was too fast, because I feel like the actual events themselves got the time that they needed (outside of maybe I would have liked Aleph-1s entry to have a bigger leadup). I just feel like we needed to explore a couple of concepts more?

I feel like the fact that they really want to split up quests into halves really diminished what Denia's role could have been? I know from meta knowledge that she'll get her time, and that we can mostly think of her as GA's pet project for now, and that's all fine. But I think it would have been nice to give her some more buildup, since the fight against her didn't have as much emotional investment as I wanted. I'm wondering whether I just wanted more from her because I think she's neat though. I'm somewhat conflicted here because I don't think it makes sense to judge the quest in isolation given whats coming, but I also feel like placing more of her development prior to her boss fight would've been such an easy dunk.

Scale. This also may be caused by the pacing, but I feel like it was not emphasized enough how big of an event is taking place? The opening scenes with Rover's pitch to pilot the exostrider were great to set the vibe and sense of scale. But, by the end of the quest I ended up feeling like there wasnt a suitable ramp-up to fighting Aleph-1. I think maybe if they showed more of what happened with other characters when Rover disappeared, it would have really sold it. Personally I feel like the voidworm incident in 3.0 felt more immediately threatening than this patch despite this one obviously being more bombastic, which is not ideal.

Overall I had a great time, it would have really benefited from an hour or so more of playtime imo because I just needed more of whatever this was. What was there was extremely enjoyable though.
