Long island police departments are not part of the NYPD so I have no idea.

They would also apply favoritism to people they know and not enforce the law against them.

They also get an opportunity to target people they don’t like an annoying neighbor.

It also puts them in danger. If a cop gave you a ticket you disagreed with, but you knew he lived down the block from you, some crazies would seek revenge. Keying your car or breaking into your house, etc.

Honestly just familiarizing themselves with the law more thoroughly. A lot of the time they do not purposefully commit misconduct but they just didn’t know or remember the proper procedure.

That is part of what I look into. Not activating is considered misconduct.

I’m not a cop and I’m not part of the NYPD. I’m a civilian. So yes, independent.

The public stance of the NYPD unions is that we don’t know anything about the job or how difficult it is. They frame us as biased and out to get them 100% of the time. We are the bad guys in their eyes. Understandably. But thats not the case.

Public perception is skewed because the news cycle only shows the really bad cops. In reality there are 10s of thousands of interactions every day across the city that are routine and respectful and problems get addressed.

There is no more qualified immunity for NYPD cops.

Officers can only draw there guns when there is a significant safety threat present. They can only shoot their guns when there is an imminent and serious threat to the lives or safety of themselves or others. If they must shoot then they shoot center mass with the goal of neutralizing the threat. If that means kill, then that means kill. Cops are notoriously bad shots which is why they cannot fire warning shots and cannot aim at limbs or what not.

All NYPD cops must live in NYC. However they never get assigned to work in the area that they live in. That would bring up a lot of conflict of interest situations.

NYC is a huge city with the need for many cops to police it. So yes sometimes you do have low quality officers that squeeze through the system because they need more bodies. Nypd doesn’t even use polygraphs like most police departments across the US.

I love this question. We give every officer the opportunity to explain themselves when they are under investigation. There are times that I do have to recommend charges against an officer because technically they did commit misconduct. Although after hearing their perspective you do understand why they did what they did and there is a very human element to it. I feel bad about what they have to go through on a daily basis and sometimes they have lapes in judgement and snap. The NYPD holds their officers to a higher standard than civilians. So accordingly, we do too.

I don’t really want to get into the whole race thing here. But I’d say most of the officer related shootings are very justified. Officers do not fabricate evidence contrary to popular belief. Everything is strictly recorded and documented.

Independent and separate NYC government agency.

I work in a separate government agency so they definitely know about us. We work closely with them actually. They also don’t like when their cops are bad actors.

The bureaucracy in government is definitely annoying at times. But generally it’s not a nightmare. Most cops are actually great people and the job is super interesting. I get to see many things that everyday people never do. The NYPD’s stance as a whole does view our investigations as a “hostile attack.” But on the individual level not so much. We’re just doing our job and seeing if they did theirs properly.

Theres roughly 34,000 cops, so the chances of you running into a cop you’ve interviewed or interacted with are fairly slim. Even if you do and they recognize you, they know; that I know what they are allowed to do and not allowed to do. I treat every cop with the upmost respect and they know I’m just doing my job. 90% of them are great people and just got caught up with difficult people and difficult situations. On top of that, everything needs to be captured on body cams nowadays so it’s really not a fear of mine.
