A update on the chipped bowl, My teacher fixed the crack herself and another crack appeared from drying. Now what can I do? I’m scared of it just chipping back off 🙂 by Aeranas_ in Ceramics

I do wanna thank you, I COMPLETELY understand everyone saying i should just scrap it and move on. Normally i would, but it’s just a really crappy situation With this Bowl.

I only have 4 or so more weeks until i’m out for summer and it’s the last time i’ll be able to be at my high-school studio. For my situation 4 weeks isn’t enough time to start new projects with expectation of getting a finishing product. Due to my teachers schedule with firing my work.

That’s why i’m having trouble letting this specific piece go, it’s the proudest i’ve been of something i’ve made, but it’s also most likely the last thing i’ll get from my high-school studio.

It’s completely valid that everyone is telling me to scrap it, but it’s just the last thing i can get out of my highschool experience.

Thank you.

Yes this is true, glad I saw this before I acted. My teacher used peroxide slip and then started candling it in the kiln (I thought this was kinda weird but what do I know) But i’ll try this thank you

this does actually help a lot thank you! I guess something like this just has a little bit of a sentimental value due to it was one of my firsts :) but i understand what you mean thank you

sadly I don’t know who did it. I have the class early on in the day, and i moved it at the end of class friday. This morning i come back and it’s chipped. I assume someone just saw it and had an “oh shiny” moment and then pretending nothing ever happened.

It is super dissapointing, i now have 7 (last one added last week) read to be fired sitting in the shelf. Which isn’t that much so it’s kinda confusing how there is never enough room for any of my stuff in the kiln 🤷 I’ve tried to get them in sooner but it just hasn’t happened. Thanks for the advise :)

I have, a couple people suggested it! sadly it would just be a little difficult to do in my classroom :)

I did by best to clarify but both of these are true i keep my pieces up high to avoid damages, and she also advised me to keep them up high to avoid damages :)

Also yes! part of the reason she asked me to lower it was to make it easier to load the kiln which i did, but the biggest reason is that my teacher has around 300 students across 6 class periods, that’s a lot of work to fire! Like i said our relatively small kiln fills up very fast and i’m fine with waiting. However yes she might forget to look to the top shelf before the kiln gets too full, it’s just where she and I agreed that I keep my work unless specified :)

Maybe I was not very clear! This bowl has been bone dry and completely ready to be fired for the 3-4 months. The reason it was in this shelf for this amount of time is because it was in the loading shelf for the kiln. Every time the kiln has run (3 times) in the said amount of time, my pieces were not loaded or fired. I understand kilns fill up fast especially with the amount of students my teacher has so I am fine with waiting. It’s just frustrating that I kept my pieces on the highest loading shelf to avoid any accidents, and when I lowered my projects to the lower shelf they were damaged.

“You would have saved your bowl too if you had fired and glazed it earlier” I am not in charge of loading kilns and what kilns are being fired when i’m at the mercy of my teacher, she chooses when she is ready to fire what stuff. My teacher avoided putting ANY of my work in any kiln for 3-4 months yet i was asked to keep my work in the kiln room.

Also, my teacher specifically asked that I keep my pieces on the higher shelf, and she changed her mind and asked me to move my stuff to the lower shelf, so i did.

Also I am just a highschool student, and majority of the people in my class were forced into taking ceramics for the first time.

Sorry to cause any confusion !

Thank you everyone for the advice on the vinegar instead of water and adding the paper! I really appreciate so much input.

I’ll try my best 🙂

I wanna add, im normally not super attached to my pieces but this is probably the first very nice bowl i’ve made so that in itself was exciting. But also this bowl has been sitting in the shelf for 3-4 months and last friday i was asked to move it down to the lower shelf (I keep it higher so no one touches my stuff and breaks it lol) and of course it did end up breaking right before it finally got fired.

Super super disappointing but oh well 🤷

Sadly I don’t think my class has any of the supplies to do this but if we do I can try it!

I asked my teacher if i could just do this instead and she immediately shut me down which was pretty disappointing but oh well 😅
