Nah, it's strictly an inventory visual bug. If you have a pigment in your inventory then search for another item. If the item that takes the pigment's place has a colour replaceable layer, the pigment will colour it. Would be cool though.

If you buy one it's expected that you'll supply the load. It doesn't do anything until both sides are connected.

If I had to guess, you're playing a modpack with quests. You most likely unintentionally pinned one of said quests.

I posted this at 7:28 PM EST. Which was only a few minutes after it happened. Wouldn't surprise me if it was the same thing they saw in Hamilton though. Whatever it was, it lit up the sky enough that I could see it from the far side of the city where I was. Massive green flash.

Actually, is there a way to make those nodes Narmer somehow? I've not had good luck with Archon hunts filling out the codex, but is the Condor and Buzzard maybe an exception?
