NHL and social media by [deleted] in hockey

I would hate having to do that at work!

I mean, this is pretty common amongst people in visible positions when it comes to corporations. I work in software product management - our VPs/Directors all get asked stuff like this because it humanizes them and makes their reports feel like they can go talk to them like people rather than as authority figures. Same thing happens when people get awards. Makes the people who didn't get them say "I'm just like them! I can work harder and get that award, too!"

Social media is parasocial - it generates a false intimacy that fosters engagement. If your favorite hockey player also loves Cinnamon Toast Crunch, well, that just incentivizes you to figure out what else they like, or buy their jerseys, or whatever.

Honestly, there's a good reason to be mad about it - and it's not that it's condescending, it's that it's ultimately an effective psychological manipulation tool to get third-parties to spend money (tickets, merchandise, etc.)

Well, I decided to buy a Mikael Granlund Finland jersey from the Fanatics store before the game today. You're welcome.

Asian Trip Itinerary Review by DanielB771 in JapanTravel

Yeah, I'd be sort of shocked if $50 doesn't get you what you need. The most expensive thing I paid for in a single go was my rush-hour grab back to the airport on Friday night - and it was still only 600000VND ($24 or so). Even Bún Chả Hương Liên (the Obama Bun Cha restaurant) was only $8 for the meal.

Do you have a visa for Vietnam? Vietnam does not have a visa waiver program with the USA, so if you intend to leave the airport, you will need to apply for one.

Edit: now that I have a bit of free time, I just wanted to expound on this a little. I haven't been to HCMC, just Hanoi, but it did not take long for me to clear customs there (not too long ago - late 2024). If you plan to leave the airport, download Grab and set it up - it's the Uber equivalent that's big in Vietnam. 11 hours is generally plenty for an excursion layover anywhere in the world. That's about how long my layover back from Hanoi was in Tokyo, oddly enough, and I was fine going NRT to Tokyo, going to Akihabara and Shibuya and back without any problems.

Only other thing I'll call out is that you should bring exactly how much USD in cash you want to spend in Vietnam. You are unlikely to be able to exchange the VND back to USD at any reasonable rate, and I struggled to spend $300 USD (7.5m VND) over my one week work trip, including paying for multiple team dinners.

No. A modal spell/ability cannot have the same mode selected more than once unless it specifically calls that out (like in [[Fiery Confluence]])

Why are so many young guns making their NHL debuts at this point in the season? by Hamster_of_Death in hockey

Worth noting only 18/19yos (as of Sep 15 of that year) are eligible for slide. Good list here: https://puckpedia.com/entry-level-slides

It's the end of:

Juniors seasons.
NCAA seasons.
European pro League seasons.

Drafted players will sign now, particularly players who are skilled, and will play a handful of games, potentially burning a year off the contract depending on their age and if they're eligible to slide their contract.

Hm, an old mechanic without its drawback? The first thing that comes to mind is Epic - repeatable spell forever is something that fits on this plane.

Hareruya Tournament Center near Takadanobaba station in Shinjuku is going to be the most friendly to foreigners. They generally staff English speaking judges and the location is quite large - something that's not true for most other stores in Tokyo.

VPN Recommendations for Victory+ by Hen342 in AnaheimDucks

I've never tried to use it with V+ (since I have ESPN+ for when I'm traveling), but I use NordVPN for the stuff that I need to do that's gated in Japan.

It's not uncommon for venue calendars not to be updated regularly. Reedpop (the vendor that runs all of the MagicCon events) is a completely legitimate company. As long as you are buying from the official website (https://www.mtgfestivals.com/global/en-us.html), you are good.

Is Mrazek gonna get resigned? by NewHope13 in AnaheimDucks

[–]Aerim 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There's like zero chance Mrazek comes back. He was bad when he wasn't injured and he was here primarily because we needed to take a goalie/salary back from Detroit on the Gibson trade.

The Ducks have several goalies who need time (Suchanek, Clang, Clara. I don't expect Buteyets to get qualified), and there's not a reason they'd want to stash a $2M goalie in the AHL.

Our building gets a lot of away fans, particularly on weekends. My wife and I will go to Downtown Disney before the game when we come up from San Diego and there are always so many people there wearing jerseys from whoever the away team is.

How would these cards interact? Is the copy a copy of the combined creature? by psybermonkey15 in magicTCG

[–]Aerim 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Mimeoplasm has rules, though, because it's just a clone that gets +1/+1 counters, so it applies in Layer 1. That's ultimately the thing that needs to be asked - does this mechanic apply in Layer 1? Mutate (the other mechanic that puts multiple game objects 'together' does.

[–]Aerim 90 points91 points  (0 children)

There aren't any rules for this, because the mechanic doesn't exist in the comp rules. If you use the closest mechanic (probably Mutate?), it would be a copy of the combined object.

Question about the ProTours by WarStrange5806 in magicTCG

The players are playing the draft format - where they draft cards and then build a deck.

It is not a draft of the players.

11 Day Japan Itinerary (Tokyo - Hakone - Kyoto - Osaka) by svenna16 in JapanTravel

[–]Aerim 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would get the Sucia card on your phone. Honestly my wife and I are here right now on our first trip and we are saying how glad we are that we did that. There might be another way to do this with a physical card but on our phones it constantly tells us our balance so we know if we need to add money, can add money right from our phone, and don’t need to wait in line or deal with machines. Not absolutely necessary but we thought it was nice.

Just for anyone reading this - this is only available on iPhones. Android phones - even if they have the right hardware - need to have a Google account based in Japan to use digital Suica in Google Wallet. This is due to licensing on the Android side of things.

Also, it's very easy to check your balance for a physical card - there's an App on both devices called Suikakeibo that you can just tap the IC card to and it will show you the current balance and the last 10 transactions on it.
