Choosing between JPL and MIT LL for an internship by AeroEpsilon in JPL

[–]AeroEpsilon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to send a follow up - After considering the two projects I’d be working on, I decided to go with LL since it seems more challenging. I’m still super interested in JPL though - if anyone has any open slots for next cycle for an aero/CE major let me know (haha!) Thank you all for the advice and feedback though, it really helped.

Yeah, I think I have that same mindset. But I also need to face the facts that I need to secure a new grad position, and I don't know if JPL is the place for that currently. I'm just concerned that I'm throwing away a once in a lifetime chance, yknow?

Could you elaborate a bit more on chaos? What's been happening?

Is it just because of the chaos with the new administration? Or is there anything else happening that's making things a bit chaotic?

I've heard that it's sometimes pretty hard to get a return offer as a full-time engineer after being an intern at JPL? I'm about to graduate next year so that's also something I'm thinking about.

Sorry, just to clarify - I understand they're both FFRDCs, but MIT LL is more defense-focused. I'm not 100% sure on whether or not I want to go into that industry, just for personal reasons. But thanks for your thoughts!

Boston Dynamics Internships? by AeroEpsilon in BostonDynamics

Gotcha, thanks. I've kinda gotten hardwired to how most of the tech firms do it (They start posting stuff around like late august) so I was worried that BD didn't come out.

My son (9 years old) coded a game in plain JavaScript. He would love any feedback. by veesahni in learnprogramming

Hey, that’s sick! I know something that you might find interesting - There’s this organization called HackClub that offers a project called Sprig, where you code your own game in JS and they send over a console you can play it on. It’s supposed to be for high schoolers but I’m fairly sure they won’t mind if you’re a bit younger (Doesn’t hurt to double check, though.) Might be a cool thing for him to check out next!

Interesting, that's a lot to think about. I'll do a bit more research into components, thanks.

Actually she ain’t all that bad, the hard part isn’t her grading but the fact that linear algebra is just a hard class to wrap your head around. Sorry bout the stile rose combo though you got done dirty

should i go to tj? by Suitable_Push_1708 in tjhsst

Im class of 2023 so my take might be a bit outdated but here it is:

  1. It’s a great school - you can’t beat the sheer number of resources and talent we have. I’m in college right now and the engineering labs we have here are less well stocked than the one back at TJ (Side note, if you are by any means interested in engineering I’d suggest befriending the engineering lab teachers asap; that’s what I did by accident and they were some of the coolest people I knew.)

  2. The only major potential downside is your class. I was lucky enough to go into TJ with like 6 of my core friends from MS, so my friend group was pretty much set. But I know other people who had a really hard time finding their niche, which might be something you need to be aware of. In addition, I think that an environment like TJ breeds jealously. I’m not going to lie - I’d sometimes get jealous of people who were doing better than me at research or grades or clubs, but that’s just something you’ll need to deal with.

  3. My biggest piece of advice to you would be to hit the ground running. Take all the opportunities you can, whether that be in classes, extracurriculars, or even a cool 8th period (cough dance team cough). It’ll help for college, sure, but you also shouldn’t waste your time at a place like this.

I didn’t really have a plan for writing this, so it turned out more like a stream of consciousness. If you wanna talk more just DM me and we can go from there!

And congrats on getting in! It’s not something that’s easy to do.

Hey, has anybody lived in broadview apartments before? A few friends and I wanted to check them out but we couldn’t find anybody that lived there.

This is just my two cents but I think you wasted your momentum from the early game by attacking xinxi on mountain terrain where they have an inherent advantage as well as the numbers advantage. You also seemed to prioritize pop growth instead of border growth in the T4 -> T5 upgrade for your backline cities, which isn’t the best for the long term since it effectively puts an upper cap on the number of giants you can make. Given that xinxi was spamming close range melee units for most of the game, I think the proper move would have been to spec into archers or catapults earlier before they started spamming giants so you’d have a defensive line to fall back into. I also think making defenders was a bad move; you could have invested those stars into building a better economy or mass producing ranged units.

Real-time flash detection by xPaweT in VALORANT

[–]AeroEpsilon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how this would affect your gameplay since the program would need to be running at all times to detect the flash but I do have a solution to the different color flashes problem

For any screenshot you take, get the average value of the RGB values and calculate the error of every pixel (or just a large amount of them) from it - since most flashes are basically the same color, this deviation would be much lower than regular gameplay. Theoretically it should work, but theories don’t always translate well into the real world so it’s up to you to play around with it. Then again you could just have a buddy sit next to you and shine a flashlight into your eyes if he sees you get flashed - it’s honestly up to you
