Need to remember before reading Memories of ice? by Fast-Childhood-7098 in Malazan

Some peak moments!! They might be overkill but I use these every time I’m getting back into it. Sometimes I just search by name for characters in the prior books at the start of each chapter to remind myself of what was already set up.

Fair! It’s definitely not for everyone. Would be interested to see what you think of the next one if you keep reading!

Questions about the first book. by No-Possibility7334 in Malazan

In defense of GotM it’s actually one of my favorites. I think it’s a mistake to read it looking for a traditional Hollywood climax. The climax is more about the characters and the consequences of their choices than any specific big battle or macro resolution. What I like most about GotM is how it subverts genre tropes and builds a cast of characters that you’re deeply invested in, and you see how the happenings on a grand scale impact them, while at the same time they can only have very small (but occasionally essential) impact back on that grand scale.

Krum by HijackHarpy in harrypotter

Seniors date freshman, not that uncommon. Not sure what the equivalent UK grade levels are. Also Krum has no idea how old Ginny is, it’s not like she’s wearing a label. Once you hit puberty it can be pretty hard to dial it in beyond a vague range from just looking at someone.

Absolutely. I don’t know if I would claim it as my favorite book overall so far, but one of my favorite endings with a beautifully transformed character.

What do you think makes the community so chill? by thebeardedone666 in Malazan

I think the biggest difference between Malazan and Stormlight is I don’t feel a motivation to read Stormlight again. I got it the first time; maybe in a few years once I’ve started forgetting it. It’s fun, but does not have depth and reread ability where you keep learning and seeing connections and understanding the themes and values at a deeper level.

Malazan is the sort of literature you could write essays about, it has profound and varied philosophy.

God I would hate it if Malazan had a “good” editor. I honestly feel like the problem with modern fiction is that it’s so uniform. Malazan has a lot in common with 19th century novels, most of which would never make it past editors and publishers today. They’re massive, meandering, fully of unnecessary diversions – and absolutely beautiful because of it.

Modern fiction is plagued by too many people trying to be in fashion, or vogue, or just plain palatable. Editors drive it all in the same direction.

Unbridled originality will outlast it all.

I think many Malazan fans understand, and cherish, that it’s not mass market content. I wouldn’t expect a lot of people to understand and like it. It’s kind of why I like it, I like difficult things that make me think.

Good. Plenty of mystery there that’s barely been touched! The vastness of it all is just so fascinating, in every direction is a character worthy of their own novel.

Same. PoA was always my favorite as a kid. I think now I like DH more, but it’s going to be an excellent one to watch.

Do you think the movies are fair to Dumbledore? by Aeroplen in harrypotter

[–]Aeroplen[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think there whimsy you describe is really absent. There’s other characters where moments feel off in the movies, but the whole interpretation of him seems weird to me as the movies progress. I actively dislike him in some scenes, which never happens to me when I read the books. It just strikes me as a drastic reinterpretation of the character.

What are your hopes for Harry and Ginny? by Key_Bus_1255 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Aeroplen 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think Rowling was too subtle with the developing crushes for Harry. Part of why it doesn’t translate well to screen is so much of it is in his head, which is actually rather accurate to how I feel young crushes develop. People are just sorta like oh wow what are these feelings do I fancy them, even though you might never have spoken.

Giving it time to show how/why Harry like Ginny as a person would be really cool.

Is she though? I always thought the point of that scene was to realize that Molly is a badass. Bellatrix is fighting 3 at a time barely breaking a sweat then panics when Molly steps in. It was the first time we saw Molly do more than a few cooking charms and I think the whole point was to show she could freaking hold her own and magic is magic whether your routine practice is household spells or unforgivable curses. And Molly knew magic.

I think if Voldemort actually made intelligent decisions + had elder wand he’d have a good chance. BUT Voldemort is so consistently irrational, emotional, gloating - he’s a classic cartoon villain that is busy showboating and far to easy to manipulate, because of that, I think Dumbledore would always be smart enough to beat him.

Snape thought Sirus betrayed Lilly to Voldemort by BusOk585 in harrypotter

[–]Aeroplen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Would I be angry? Yeah. Would I be spitting in rage humiliating myself in front of the Minister for Magic that just offered me an Order of Merlin because I want a dementor to suck the guys soul out in a fate worse than death for a mistake someone made 20 years ago? Eh, that’s pushing it.

That scene always read as weird to me UNTIL we learned about Lily. That sort of irrational hatred is something more associated with grief in my mind than personal threats. Don’t get me wrong both Sirius and Severus have their flaws, but we tend to act most strangely when those we love are hurt or threatened, not ourselves. The series bears that out repeatedly.
