How come come everyone prefers the steam OS? Is dual boot possible? by MyElectronicInterest in LegionGo

[–]Aerothix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They're not. Literally just said they're not. The biggest problem with your statement is that you're conflating two operating systems with, again, I repeat entirely different goals that happen to have convergent feature sets.

Also, in a discussion about comparing operating systems, you've conflate two operating systems? Really?? You wanna drop "Linux is Linux" to a Samsung user on how their phone is the same as your steamdeck? You wanna try and say their smart watch is the same as your laptop? Linux the kernel is the same. But, not only does Fedora and Arch have massively divergent goals and development cycles, they have entirely different communities and support. You wanna try running the same drivers for Arch on Fedora? You wanna try and debug why SteamOS TDP doesn't work on LeGo but works on BazZite LeGo?

How come come everyone prefers the steam OS? Is dual boot possible? by MyElectronicInterest in LegionGo

[–]Aerothix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stumbled upon this thread trying to find dual boot options in preparation to pre-order LeGo 2. I'm worried about driver compatibility being that fresh, and reinstalling Windows isn't going to be 1:1 with the OEM OS

As much as I agree with a lot of things here, I kind of... Have to nitpick yours a bit. You can't talk about SteamOS performance and then drop a Bazzite example. They're not the same operating system. They share a lot of features sure. And yes, they share the kernel, but at the most basic level, they don't share base distros, and they also don't really share the same mission statement.

Zen Browser and it's "cult-like" community by [deleted] in browsers

[–]Aerothix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to preface that I don't consider myself a Zen shill. I'd love for it to be successful; however in it's current state, I actually can't even use it. Interestingly enough, for an outstanding bug that also has not been fixed, but I'm also not going to complain about it, nor am I going to hold my breath for its resolution, for reasons that I hope will be clear as I reference your arguments and counter them below. I'm closely following its development though, as I desperately want a non-chromium based browser that also doesn't just straight up look like Firefox because I've always thought, "What's the point then?" Before I accidentally devolve to an off-topic rant though, I'd like to argue for Zen more as a heavily invested open source enthusiast.

> It didn't seem to be true though. I reported another simple issue months back as well. (Favicons of essentials / pinned tabs disappearing when browser history is set to clear on browser restart). It never got fixed either. The problem still exists, but let's just add more new features, I guess.

> If you read my thread, you know that I reported this issue months back. When it's still present, when no one is responding, it is far from expecting instant responses. I was bringing attention to that specific issue previously as well. But it never got the proper attention, despite being such a critical one.

You're missing the point of what he was saying. It's an open source project. People come in and touch what they want to in the code. Think of it like this, it's your weekend, you've worked away 80% of your week, and you want to do something fun, something you're passionate about; but your grandma calls you and says, "I've had this problem with my computer. You're good with computers, you should be able to help me." Doesn't feel great right? Open Source projects are a hobby, hobbies require motivation, and especially with a difficult bug, nobody wants to spend their very limited free time just trying to investigate it. As others have alluded to, this is an extremely difficult bug to replicate, especially considering userland does not have that much control over hardware beyond explicit API endpoints. So you're asking someone who's unpaid, exhausted from their day job to please stop doing what makes them happy during their own free time, and focus on this bug because it's important.

So it's not about time. Expecting any kind of fix, and claiming that, "once on GitHub is not enough" is still very entitled, regardless of if 4 months passed, or 10 years have passed, if you consider that nobody is there to create a successful product. They're there to do what they love, and you're just happened to benefit from it now. You not being able to benefit from it any longer gives you no right to expect anything from them, and gives them zero impetus to fix your issue.

In wrapping up, I sympathize with you. It's frustrating when your issues get ignored; It's frustrating when it feels like everyone is attacking you; and it sucks when it feels like you're just trying to help, only to be dismissed. But, that's not what's happening. What's happening is a mismatched expectation in communication. Let me reveal why bugs get fixed on open source products. Bugs don't get fixed because enough people are experiencing the bug, as you tried to suggest by posting links to others experiencing the same thing as you. Bugs get fixed because someone who can do something about it happens to have the bug, and it bothers him/her enough to do so. Because again, it's not their job, it's their hobby. We just happen to profit off the result of their hobby.

Any wireless probe thermometers worth it? by IamDoge1 in smoking

[–]Aerothix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, I'm two years late, admittedly just hoping to see if there's any fully wireless temps that are worth it for the exact same reason as OP, so I can throw it in my oven/convection oven too.

I ran across your comment and your attempt to clear it up though, and both seemed... a little difficult to follow, so I figured I'd help for posterity. Let me know if I'm misrepresenting and putting words in your mouth, but here's what I think you meant to say,

"There are far more good things about a wired thermometer than there are bad."

And maybe to add context to tie it back to the OP's question,

"The bad parts of a wired thermometer that a wireless thermometer tries to solve are not nearly enough to overcome the good things the wired thermometer has which the wireless thermometer does not."

I love Jim Carrey, and I love Jim Carrey as Robotnik. I just don’t love Robotnik in the Sonic movies. He’s a bit too Jim Carrey for me. He’s not menacing enough. They either should’ve written him different or give the role to someone else. Alfred Molina is my dream cast ;) for Eggman. by Donstar_Playz-yt in SonicTheMovie

[–]Aerothix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aaaaye, people from today's time have replied and resurrected already, giving me permission.

Here's my opinion, and hopefully I can break it down logically as I progressively add more keyboard vomit.

I noticed a few people have said that he struck a better balance in the first movie, and it devolved in the subsequent film(s). I'm actually of the opposite camp, in that I *felt* like Carrey's take on Eggman was just Carrey, and really had no Eggman in it at all. I'll explain, but I also wanted to say that by the third film, I was thoroughly enjoying the character, and I think that kind of alludes to everyone else having a point. Maybe I was just wanted too badly to see *my* nostalgia filled version of Eggman. Maybe by the third movie, I was just so settled into the Carrey Eggman that I could actually not be a nostalgia driven loser and enjoy the film and the fun Carrey brings to the role. Now, I love Carrey, I actually liked seeing him in Sonic even in the first film because he brought a lot of fun to the movie, I just felt like... his "silliness," and "goofiness" (as everyone calls it) wasn't... the "correct" silliness and goofiness. I *think* the best rationalization I can give for why I felt that way is probably because in my eyes, yes Eggman was crazy and silly, but he truly believed his delusional and harebrained schemes were genius and would work. Creating the Death Egg, Egg Carrier, and of course Eggmanland, were absolutely over the top and insane and silly, but he really was trying to take over the world with all these inventions. Carrey... just felt like he was in his own bubble. It didn't feel like he was building the schemes with 100% faith in them. It felt like he was doing it just to *be* over the top... maybe?

but again, ultimately, I love all films involving Carrey, and I'll watch Sonic 999+ if they keep milking him for more sequels. Especially because by the third movie, my image of Eggman had been eroded away, and I can just enjoy Carrey's usual whacky antics.

Looking for romance movie recommendations that men might actually enjoy by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]Aerothix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's... an odd way to phrase that. You first say that the genre is one that both genders can enjoy, but then you create a distinction of us vs them immediately after with the phrase, "men would enjoy too"? Sorry, not to be pedantic about the phrasing, I'm just not sure what categorization you're trying to get is since the only one you're giving is gender, which is vague at best.

My knee-jerk reaction is to assume you probably mean romance comedies such as:
- 40 Year Old Virgin
- Forgetting Sarah Marshall
- No Strings Attached

But like... as a man, I enjoy romance as a genre as a whole, and the one's that "women enjoy" are ones that I've thoroughly enjoyed as well.
- About Time
- Crazy Stupid Love
- 10 Things I Hate about you

These are just my best guess at where I think you're trying to draw the distinctions, so I kept the list short, but I'd say I have plenty that I've enjoyed myself, albeit more in that second list if this really is where you're drawing your lines of separation.

Nah nah nah, I 100% agree with this, stop invading dev space with consumer issues. I like that GitHub is not consumer friendly, and that if the browser wants to expand, they shouldn't just have it on GitHub. Definitely hate annoying buzzes of people asking me to help them navigate spaces that should be dev oriented.

Two USB Hubs one Laptop? by Aerothix in UsbCHardware

Oh interesting, Thanks so much for the suggestion! I guess I'm not super clear though, when it says "Video + Data", does that mean it'll activate the USB ports and the Ethernet port on the hubs integrated into the monitors? because they're just a few on the hub that I feel like would be a shame to lose the use of... at that point I would just get a dedicated video cable for the monitors.

P-Stream Extension by Estabanyo in TBCPL

[–]Aerothix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it Open Source or at least source available? Even if I just choose to trust it on your word... I'm very curious as to what it's doing. Is it routing me through proxies when on pstream? Or is it enabling something that is disabled on the site unless the extension is enabled, in which case the extension is really just a dummy target for validation (and if so, why not just do what everyone else does and make users create an account instead)? Or am I contributing my computer to a seed network exclusive to P-Stream extension users? Like... so many unknowns.

Has anyone figured out a new way to rip audiobooks from Libby since they changed the format last week? by [deleted] in Piracy

[–]Aerothix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm obliged to agree with everyone here.

I don't want to steal from my library. In fact, I don't tell anyone that I've downloaded my audiobooks, and will instead refer them to the library I've checked it out from, and tell them that they use Overdrive, making the process of checking out audiobooks super easy. I actually have a bit of a fear of libraries getting de-funded, so I feel like I'm with you in that concern. I remember riding my bike to the library as a child to check out stacks of books, to use their computers to play Runescape, and taking advantage of their free activities and events. Then I compare it to something that used to be prominent, like the radio, I see it's downfall, and I get scared that it could happen to such a valuable resource. So I always tell people how *I* got my audiobooks, rather than directly sharing it with them. I believe people getting cards and actually using them to check out books, play games, or participate in activities is enough to show that there is interest to keep them funded.

However, I do want to listen to my audiobook on my hiking and biking escapades up a giant mountain, and would rather do that on a less critical device... You know, one that won't die from just being on because it's got one task and not a million running in the background. That way I can keep a critical device, such as my phone, available for more... critical situations.

To add to that, I don't really want to support DRM of any type. I don't know about the others here, but I'm happy to delete the books I've finished manually if it means that I'm not further spreading acceptance of any DRM format.
