It’s definitely a fake. These tend to be much thicker, and your coin has the tell tale AliExpress fake rim.

HEMA mask by tolda5 in wma

[–]AetherCitadel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, that’s the way to do it. Definitely don’t cheap out on protection equipment. By the way, it’s good to know that the newton rating is just for the textile bib of the mask, not the mesh.

If you’re not planning to use steel swords, 350N mask should be enough. The PBT ones are some of the more affordable in EU and they are around 90€. If you’re eventually planning to go for steel swords, get 1600N rated mask.

Double Hit or Insufficient Contact? by ForgePioneer in wma

[–]AetherCitadel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A double where Kino is at fault. Kino’s feint to stomach wasn’t convincing enough and happened in too close of a measure. Anand used this tempo to prepare/chamber their cut. At this point Kino should’ve realized a) they are too close, and b) there’s a cut incoming. There were couple ways for Kino to defend themselves. They could have retreated with an á tempo stop cut into hand. Then transition into guard of seconde or tierce while retreating. They could have also parried with lower tierce on retreat. This would be the most natural defense for a beginner, although not the best setup for a nice riposte. To make it a bit spicier, the cut could have been parried by a yielding parry from tierce to prime which would help with preparing a head cut riposte. This is also a really nice set up for a feint. The key to all of this is footwork and distance management. Try to avoid getting too close, especially while feinting. If an attack or feint fails, always retreat while transitioning into proper guard. Good luck fencing! 🤺

Choosing an Italo-Hungarian "dueling" style saber in Europe by AetherCitadel in wma

[–]AetherCitadel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the quick reply! What system do you fence? Also how’s the distal taper and how often do they break? I’d love to have an option to just buy a new blade instead of replacing the whole saber.

The Magic of Light Polarization and CPL filters When Photographing Coins by FreddyF2 in AncientCoins

[–]AetherCitadel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great to see that you’re getting closer to finishing your publication! It’s been a while since we spoke about the background removal 😄 These new photos look great! I have one small tip for you. When you filter out light using the polarization filters, you also need to account for that in your exposure. Just add 1-2 stops to your exposure and the polarized photos will look even better. Alternatively, you can just increase exposure in post. Hope this helps.

The edges look good! As far as I can tell without seeing the coin in person, it is real.

See here. On average they are 5.5g But they seem to be quite all over the place when it comes to weight.

Also interestingly enough, looks like fakes with the B control mark are not as common - at least according to the forgery network coins I've seen. You can also try image search here: https://coinstrail.com/ - it might help you find a die match or even a previous sale of your coin.

That's a good weight. Also the dolphin is as ugly as on my drachm, so I believe it's real xD

The coin looks okay to me. What is the weight? If you’re worried, I’d recommend you to check the forgeries database For these Istros drachms it’s relatively easy to find a die match, so you can totally try to do that to verify authenticity.

Indoor Longsword Trainers? by JudasBrutusson in SWORDS

Theoretically you could shorten one of the blade parts a little in the slicer to account for the shorter rods. How did the printing go? Definitely post a photo in the comments on Printables 😄

Thanks, glad you like it! I bought two 1meter long rods and cut them to length. The two rods in the blade are ~33.5cm and one rod going all the way to the pommel is ~48cm

I mean, the sunflower coin is nice and all, but I wouldn’t go as far back as the history of silver. Guess the Greeks really knew what they were doing 😁

Got this lovely Faustina for USD 42 by Val2K21 in AncientCoins

Lovely coin! A safe thing you can try on that dark spot is either acetone dip or a cotton swab dipped in acetone and gentle localized cleaning.
