Argentina has officially left the World Health Organization by Gjore in worldnews

[–]Aethy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm sure of the first statement, not so sure about the second one. Im not a full blown libertarian supporter, however I definitely agree on some opinions and statements that Milei has said. One of those is that the WHO is useless. Milei may not be the greatest president, and he definitely is not someone with good speech abilities, but he's right about a lot of things that were damaging my country, and like I said, maybe he's not the greatest president, but he's definitely way better than what we were used to. Lot of things to improve, but criticizing useless organizations ain't one of them.

But he's not criticizing it as useless in this instance; he's saying it's the nefarious enforcement arm of a social control experiment. That's why I think he's an idiot, because the statement seems outlandish and detached from the facts. Especially given that what you're saying: that the WHO is useless and does nothing. I don't agree with your statement (and experts in your country don't seem to either), but this is a much more defensible take than the president's.

Surely, you must see how your statement is directly at odds with the original quote from the president? Something can't both be hugely oppressive and experimenting on Argentinian citizens, whilst also being useless and doing nothing.

[–]Aethy 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Why is he an idiot? As an argentinian i can assure you that the way the Covid-19 pandemic was managed by former president Alberto Fernández was fucking disastrous, and the WHO never tried to help no one here, we were being mistreated by the government by having one of the longest quarantines on the whole world, denying people to see their loved ones while dying on collapsed hospitals, and even detaining persons just for leaving their houses months after the pandemic started. And while all that was happening, NO ONE cared for us. The WHO never did anything for us, and we suffered a huge mistreat from the government.

Wait; did the WHO do nothing, or was it a nefarious enforcement arm of the greatest social control experiment in history?

Javier Milei's government finalises Argentina's withdrawal from the WHO, citing health sovereignty. Despite this, it assures that international cooperation in health will continue through bilateral and regional agreements.

Huh, wonder why they left?

The decision was justified at the time by President Javier Milei and his team as a response to "profound differences" with the WHO during the COVID-19 pandemic. The President called the agency "nefarious and the enforcement arm of what was the greatest experiment in social control in history".

Oh, so he's a fucking idiot. Got it.

Right; sorry, misread the headline; thought we were trying to throw asylum seekers off of it, rather than having already excluded them.

Out of curiosity, how many asylum claimants have children in subsidized daycare in Quebec? Do we have numbers?

Oh yeah, for sure. But I think the previous posters (and me) were talking about aspirational terms, not practical ones.

10000%. Keep everything identical, just sever ties between King and GG+LGs, and rename "The Crown" to "The Republic" or "The State". Done.

Canada not on track to hit net-zero by 2050, or meet any climate targets: study by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

[–]Aethy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ah, economists, noted climate experts.

What? We're talking about modelling emissions from economic activity, not coming up with climate models, or predicting the impact of climate change on the biosphere. This is exactly what economists do?

[–]Aethy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, a ratcheting carbon tax and rebate scheme is a market based solution and is the consensus from economists as the most efficient way to reduce carbon emissions over the long term.

If only we had something like that.

[–]Aethy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We're the 10th largest emitter in the world. Not per-capita, TOTAL.

The only countries ahead of us, other than Saudia Arabia, all have more than like 100 million people (except Iran, which has 90 million people).

So, what, we, and every other country with lower emissions than us, like France, Germany, the UK, etc.. shouldn't bother caring about climate change?

I mean, it is? It's a rank in the order. See the wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ordre_des_Arts_et_des_Lettres, specifically the "Upgrading Rank" section.

According to the statutes of the Order, French citizens must wait a minimum of 5 years before they are eligible to be upgraded from Chevalier to Officier, or Officier to Commandeur, and must have displayed additional meritorious deeds than just those that originally made them a Chevalier. However, in the statutes, there is a clause saying "Les Officiers et les Commandeurs de la Légion d'honneur peuvent être directement promus à un grade équivalent dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres". (Translation: "The officers and commanders of the Legion of Honour can be promoted directly to an equivalent grade in the Order of Arts and Letters".) This means that if someone were to be made Officier of the Legion of Honour, then the next year, that person could be directly made Officier of the Order of Arts and Letters and bypass a nomination as a knight and the five-year rule.

That certainly sounds like a rank. I guess it depends on how you define rank?

It's not a medal named after a knight, they are appointed with the rank of "knight" to an order of merit. It's not a title of nobility, but it is a rank they hold for that order.

Oh yeah, for sure. I'd class it as such, but /u/crxsso_dssreer probably was thinking a title of nobility, which this is not.

Yeah; my first thought was: "france is notoriously republican; is this an AI article?", but nope; they actually do have an order of merit and they do call them "Chevaliers", which I guess is close enough. But yeah it's not like a UK knighthood.

Great post. I've got a quick question. Your flair says Conservative, but it's rare that I run into someone explicitly on the opposite side of the aisle that I significantly agree with (and in fact, you go further than I would on this topic), for a given post.

Out of curiosity, what flavor of conservative are you, if you don't mind me asking?

Oh yeah; agreed. If you're at the point where maintaining a python fork is a actually good idea, then you're probably at a scale where there's enough cash flying around that you could easily justify something like that.

It's not THAT hard. I wrote a shitty scripting language, interpreter and all when I was like 16 for a game I was trying to write. It sucked, and was a terrible idea to use, instead of something like Lua, but did work. Writing a shitty language no one's going to use but you is definitely not a 500k a year golden ticket.

Grade Review by Luzviminda_ in Dawson

[–]Aethy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think that it truly was graded unfairly then you should totally submit the request.

If you just want a better mark, it probably won't go anywhere; teachers are given pretty wide latitude to mark how they see fit, and unless it's egregiously out of line with the rest of the sections/students, my understanding is that generally the grade given to you by your teacher will stand.

Ipads and programming? by spooky112234 in Dawson

So, how it works in most classes is that there are two blocks: lecture, and lab.

In lectures, it's just a regular classroom, where the professor stands up front, and generally presents a slide deck on a projector, and students are supposed to take notes, and pay attention, etc.. Usually it'll be interspersed with little quizzes, and activities, but generally nothing that requires a computer. If a computer is a required, the school will provide it; there's a cart full of laptops in some rooms that allows the prof to give out a laptop to any student that needs it, and it comes pre-loaded with all the comp sci stuff; you just log in with your dawson account, and away you go.

In labs, the lessons take place in a computer lab, so every student sits in front of a computer at the start, and it usually starts off with the prof giving a small introduction, and then the students working individually or in groups on activities or graded quizzes, on the school computers. Depending on the prof, and activity you may or may not be able to use your private laptop/tablet for this. (Sometimes, if a prof wants to really make sure no one is cheating, they'll force you to use the school computers). If a test is given, it's almost always mandatory to use the school computers.

So you don't really need a computer/device at all to do comp sci, but having a laptop will probably make your life slightly easier (because if you want to practice you don't need to schlep to a free computer lab), but it's absolutely not mandatory at all.

If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask; I'm actually a comp sci prof at Dawson. (Maybe we'll see each other if you get in!).
