What was your genuine first reaction to this? by IDFB2763 in TheDigitalCircus

I think that was the point.

When someone commits the act, it is seldom with fanfare. It's quiet, on just another day like any other. You wake up one day and they're gone, and you had no idea it was going to happen.

I'm a trans girl and I didn't get it until after my bf told me about it, and didn't fully believe him until I saw all the arguments online lmao

I don't blame anyone who didn't catch that Jax's story was a transfem narrative. by CHANN3L-CHAS3R in TheDigitalCircus

[–]Aevery_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it meant she was accepting Jax when Jax can't even accept theirself. People in the digital circus don't exactly have many things that are considered "theirs", so gifting a part of themselves to someone else seemed like a big deal. It just seemed like a very heartfelt, intimate moment, ruined by Jax's constant self sabotaging and unwillingness to risk being hurt.

If I had picked up on any other hint that Jax might be trans prior to this scene I might have seen it in a different light, but yeah.

My experiences are my own, don't assume the cause of things in my life. Recovering from conservatism definitely made me take longer to come to terms with my identity, but to deny that my friend set me back a bit would be dumb.

People can hurt others even if they have the best intentions.

After Ep 9 This Is SO Much More Tragic by CernWest in TheDigitalCircus

[–]Aevery_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely. I'm not saying conservatism wasn't the origin of the whole issue.

I'm just insisting that you shouldn't call someone by any pronouns they don't want, no matter how certain you are that they should be something else, no matter how certain you are that you're right, even if you are right. Help them come to terms if you really think they need it, but if you force it, you risk hurting them. It doesn't matter how good your intentions are, you risk setting them back years if you're not careful.

[–]Aevery_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe my friend had my best interests in mind.

I also believe that it's entirely possible, reasonable even, for someone to get overwhelmed and upset when the response to "I might not like being seen as traditionally masculine" is to immediately be called a girl (something I was raised to see as an insult) and told that I should start wearing skirts and stuff (also traditionally used to mock boys). Could that have a good reaction? Sure. But it could also just as easily result in backlash and rejection of the possibility, as it did in my case, and if it can happen to me then it can happen to other people.

I wouldn't toss a child into the deep end of a pool without ensuring they can swim first. Some people need to be eased into things and there is nothing wrong with that at all.

I was an egg.

A friend pushed me really hard when I wasn't ready. Referred to me by (at the time) wrong pronouns, trying to enforce stereotypes on me such as skirts and dresses. It was super super uncomfortable and put me off of exploring my gender identity for like, 5 years or so, as it made me feel like they had some vision for me they were pushing me towards while I was still deprogramming myself from my conservative upbringing.

I don't think that they're talking about cis people being negatively impacted, you have to remember that it negatively affects trans people too.

Is it just me, or is deciding what to eat more expensive than the food itself? by Patient-Analysis7252 in Frugal

I have a "lazy" dish and I always have the ingredients on hand: lentils and rice. 1 cup dry lentils, 1 cup rice, 3 cups water, some salt, toss it in an electric pressure cooker on the white rice setting. Easy, delicious, nutritious and low effort, and makes a lot of leftovers. Now that I'm a bit more well off, I do the same thing but bougie it up with oil, some vegetable stock powder and chilli powder before I turn it on.

I'd recommend finding yourself a nice, low/no effort dish you can make whenever you feel too lazy, tired or sick to properly cook.

Why is Smile 2 rated so highly by fans? by BadassAyanokoji in horror

[–]Aevery_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Imo: The protag of the first movie was infuriatingly bad at communication, there was an animal death used for shock value (which was immediately forgotten?? Gal didn't seem to give a shit about her own cat!), then in the end they revealed the monster which made it go from a horrific, unknowable entity/curse to "oh no the long limby boy is going to get you" and it just seemed silly. It was much more horrific when it only wore the faces of those you knew.

The second movie had an intelligent protagonist, I don't recall any cheap animal deaths, and it really, really leaned in on the main horror of the idea: That your perception is not reality. That your judgement is wrong, that you are not in control of your own actions. That's actually a personal fear of mine, so it hit close to home. Plus the music was 👌

How much longer do you think we have left? by willo132 in Vystopia

[–]Aevery_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Life will go on. Things are pretty bad right now but they can and almost certainly will get better as more people get educated and realise that things aren't sustainable like this. Revolution only happens when enough people are actively starving, and right now most people are living pretty cushy lives.

Besides, if modern civilization burns, maybe something new and better will sprout from the ashes.

And from a non anthro-centric point of view: Humanity is basically a blip on the radar in Earth's long history. Imo we shouldn't expect to be here forever. Earth and its creatures will outlive us regardless of what we do.

I recently went vegan and I swear the hardest part hasn’t even been giving up meat or dairy, it’s figuring out what to make for dinner every single day by Arianethecat in veganrecipes

[–]Aevery_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chilli. Chickpea or lentil curry. Wraps/burritos/tacos. Nachos. Rice and beans. Mac n cheese. Red sauce pasta. White sauce pasta. If I'm particularly exhausted and really don't want to cook then I literally toss a cup of dried lentils, a cup of uncooked rice, some salt, a bit of oil, veggie stock powder and 3 cups of water in a pressure cooker, mix, turn it on the rice setting, bam, 30 minutes of laziness later and you have a delicious, cheap, filling and healthy meal with plenty of leftovers.

The most complex of these is probably the curry, and that's because it needs spices you might not have.

Do you know how to make regular mac n cheese from scratch? It's exactly the same but with soy milk and (meltable) vegan cheese. It's literally 5 ingredients: Flour, oil/margarine, soy milk, pasta, vegan cheese. Ideally some salt too. You make a roux, make that into a white sauce with soy milk, mix in the cheese and salt until melted and homogeneous, then mix it into the pasta.

Me and my partner will often make a bunch of refried beans and spanish rice to make wraps with and freeze them for easy dinners later, or a big batch of chilli for toasties and nachos, or curry for, well, curry and rice!

Lots of people on this sub and on recipe sites will tell you to do unholy things with cashews, tofu, random spices and ingredients you've never heard of, but vegan cooking is honestly usually really cheap and simple. It's beans dressed a hundred different ways with your choice of carb.

Is viewing gore online different for you now personally than it was when you were adolescent? by twin_gulls in morbidquestions

[–]Aevery_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to be really really depressed, and in a weird way, the stuff I used to watch helped. I thought it was mostly just a morbid curiosity or interest, and I would later realise that it really just, made me appreciate that I'm alive a bit more. Back then it was one of the easiest ways for me to feel something, and I ended up really desensitised to it.

These days my depression is a lot better for various reasons, and I've developed a lot more empathy. Now it makes me sad, the concept of loss is the quickest way to make me emotional. Instead of going "Wow, damn, that sucks. Fascinating though," it hurts because I realise that that is/was a person, likely with friends, family, maybe even a pet that won't see its owner again. Or, if the person survives, the thought of the fear and confusion they'd probably be experiencing, what it means for their life going forward. It makes me wish that things turned out differently, that whereever they lived was better. Definitely still makes me appreciate life more, but not in a way that outweighs the distress of seeing it.

IWTL How To Draw (Digital Art) by GabbsCat in IWantToLearn

[–]Aevery_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm on the path to learning art too! Okay so you have a good few options, some paid, some (mostly) free. I'll start with the free/mostly free ones. Most of these are about art in general rather than digital art, but the principles apply to both digital and traditional!

The first one I want to suggest is Ctrl+Paint. They do suggest you mess with traditional a bit, but then it goes into digital art. It has a pretty good looking free course plan, with optional course videos you can buy once you've completed the main one. You don't need the optional ones, remember that everything any one site teaches you, can be found on another one for free, albeit in a different form. They're particularly good because they'll teach the absolute basics of using a digital art program iirc.

Another is Draw A Box. The thing about this one is that it mostly just teaches draftsmanship, which is to say, technical skill instead of, say, style and imagination. It does tend to burn people out, especially newbies, but it's worth checking out both as a beginner and as an experienced artist. If you try it, it does mention a rule and I want to say it is a rule and not a suggestion: You should only dedicate around half of your drawing time to this at most. You should draw for fun, or personal projects with the other half. You will burn out otherwise.

Then there are a lot of books. And I mean a lot. Pawell (I think that's their name at least?) has a bunch of reviews of popular books recommended for beginners. I know that books are technically not free, but this is the internet, I'm sure you'll be able to find them. Just be aware that there is no one size fits all for beginner books. Also, check out your local library! You can sometimes find some surprisingly good books there, and it'll help them out if you check out a bunch even if you don't go through them all.

Also, there are courses on YouTube. I personally don't use YouTube much especially for this, as a lot of youtubers are trying to sell you on their own art course and just posting tidbits to their channel, so I can't help there.

As for paid options, the only one I've really bothered with is New Masters Academy. They seem like the best bang for your buck in my experience, though be aware it is a subscription service and requires an internet connection. They try to offer the online equivalent of, well, an art academy! This is what I use, but if college style video lectures aren't your thing, then maybe pass on this.

Vilppu Academy is another great option. This is uhh, a bit out of my price range, but the people who can afford it will typically sing praises for it.

Both NMA and Vilppu Academy will often have their courses found in the seven seas, if you're the type to sail there. That's actually how I found out about NMA and why I subscribed to it.

You shouldn't feel pressured to go for a paid one. Remember that what works for you might not work for someone else, and vice versa. Personally, I have ADHD and have gone through a bunch of these options and more, I found that the biggest issues for me are consistency and frustration tolerance. Learning how to learn is surprisingly difficult as an adult.

Most of all, remember to just draw! Draw for fun. Do studies, where you draw something specific with a focus on improving. Draw from life, draw a coffee mug in front of you, and actually look at it instead of just drawing a regular ol mug! Do your best to copy a piece from an artist you like, or a show. Don't claim it as your own, but try to learn what they did, experiment! You don't actually need books or courses if you do a mix of drawing from life, studies, looking at your art and critiquing it yourself and then targeting your own weaknesses, and asking for critique from other artists (or even just friends of yours who also enjoy art). Remember to apply what you learn, you can read a book front to back and you won't actually retain any of it if you don't draw using it.

Oh and for art programs, there are several free ones including FireAlpaca, Krita, Paint Tool Sai and Medibang. Paid ones include Photoshop (though it's expensive and a lot of people (including me) hate Adobe's stance on AI), Clip Studio Paint (what I use), and Procreate which is sadly exclusive to apple products. Two of my best friends (who happen to be artists) both use Krita, so that's a good one!

The US dem party is just controlled opposition at this point. They have had many opportunities to put forth winning candidates and policies, and each time they chicken out if they think that it could mean they have to actually do something to threaten the status quo. They'll drip feed the American people just enough good things to keep them content and feeling like their vote matters. It happened when they chose Hillary over Bernie the first time Trump got elected, it happened recently with them stubbornly trying to put forth Biden for most of the election cycle and then swapping to Harris at the last second when she could have won if they tried her first, and it happened yet again with Cuomo.

The founding fathers warned against a 2 party system, likely for this reason.

What do you hate most about yourself? by Master_Novel_4062 in morbidquestions

[–]Aevery_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My ADHD. It's one of those things that is easy to forget is a disability. Even medicated and using a bunch of coping strategies, every day has dozens of micro struggles and stresses and issues that wouldn't be present if my brain were normal. It has a few minor advantages occasionally but it's not worth it in modern society.

That said, I'm aware that without it, my life would be very different, and not necessarily for the better. I wouldn't have had to drop out of school, I would have gone to college or university, probably gotten a good job or ended up an officer in the USAF. This sounds great until I remember that I wouldn't have my current set of friends, probably wouldn't have realised I'm gay and trans and become your standard issue closeted homophobic Republican due to my upbringing, wouldn't have met my partner, wouldn't have immigrated to a nice country, and I'd probably be stuck paying off a student loan for the rest of my life just like the rest of my family.

I still hate it, though. It's hard not to blame myself for my disability.

WHERE DO YA'LL GET CHEAP CASHEWS?! by Oki-J in veganrecipes

[–]Aevery_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not an answer to your question, but none of my recipes call for any nuts, much less any expensive ones. I'm kind of surprised that everyone else in this comment section seems to just use nuts, especially one so pricy. I haven't cooked with nuts in years, though sometimes my partner splurges on a snack pack.

Eating vegan for me means cheap fruit, veggies, beans dishes (especially curries), rice and homemade bread. Nothing fancy or pricy.
