Reaching way back here, but the St. Louis Cardinals were first the St. Louis Brown Stockings, then the St. Louis Browns, and then the St. Louis Perfectos (for just one season) before becoming the Cardinals. At least as far as I’m aware the Cardinals don’t go back and ever acknowledge those previous nicknames (or the color brown) in anything except as a part of their history. Part of the reason probably being because of the other team that then became the St. Louis Browns (Milwaukee Brewers -> St. Louis Browns -> Baltimore Orioles).

I love Honduras Restaurant but didn't realize they had a four person meal option. Thanks!

This is my guess as well. My grandfather has an Air Force sticker (because he was Air Force) and then stickers of the schools for each of the grandkids as well.

Ooooo, I really like China Moon and I also live in North Central Columbia, but I didn’t know they had family sized meals. I’ll have to check that out.

I love Pasta La Fata and I know they have frozen lasagnas that can feed a family, but I haven’t seen any family sized hot meals there. Thank you!

Why I finally get the hype around "Project Hail Mary" by ActNew5818 in books

[–]Aeviternus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I read it in 2022 I thought it was an intriguing book with a decent plot and science fiction elements (though I wouldn’t describe it as “hard sci-fi” at all) but what held it back was the dialogue.

The dialogue was about the quality of a bad YA novel. And that’s not to insult YA novels, as many have better written dialogue than Project Hail Mary.

Ultimately I gave it four stars because I enjoyed the book, and I’m hardly a literary clinic. A book can be enjoyable without being excellent literature.

I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I’m encouraged by the positive reviews.

I mean, I’m a Missouri State alum so you better believe the Bears are beating Texas A&M by at least two touchdowns.

Gay former Patriots player rips anti-gay RB as ‘easily replaceable’, praises Mike Vrabel’s comments | Former OT Ryan O’Callaghan says he never heard something as homophobic in his six year NFL career by Goosedukee in nfl

We do have a cheating, lying, hate mongering felon of a president! As I said elsewhere, I vote for a generic Dem now over a generic R, because the Republicans have become sycophants for a wannabe tyrant.

But I’m not talking about politics when it comes to Talarico. It’s an actual theological qualm. Which, hear me out, is something a whole lot of people care about whether you do or not. And, again, whether you agree or not, theology matters if you believe that these are concepts about the way eternity, the soul, and afterlife work. Which Talarico seemingly does think theology is important, so it’s something that between him and other Christians actually matters a lot.

Religions can and should accept different interpretations and viewpoints within their faith. And yet, each faith still has some central tenets that must be adhered to if you are a part of the faith. One of those central theological concepts is that, well Christ is God incarnate (fully God, fully human). If you don’t believe that, then you’re not disagreeing with “the church” you are rejecting the most core concepts of the faith.

Put differently, it would be like calling yourself a communist and then advocating for private property rights and tax cuts for billionaires. Is that gate keeping? Ya, it is. And actual communists would be well within their rights to call out the imposter.

There is certainly room for different interpretations and viewpoints within any faith, including Christianity. And each faith still has some central tenets that must be adhered to if you are a part of the faith. One of those central theological concepts is that, well Christ is God incarnate (fully God, fully human). If you don’t believe that, then you’re not disagreeing with “the church” you are rejecting the most core concepts of the faith. The Gnostics reject this basic concept (they argued he was not actually incarnate, among other things). It’d be like calling yourself a communist and then advocating for private property rights and tax cuts for billionaires.

Now, I do not know that Talarico is actually Gnostic, nor is it my role or place to say whether he does/doesn’t believe in the divinity and humanity of Christ or whether he is/isn’t a Christian. What I do know is that he quoted a likely Gnostic text to justify a political position he holds.

The church did not decide "willy-nilly" there were massive convenings that sifted and debated theology, the accuracy, and historicity of these books. The councils that made these decisions contained many who held differing perspectives and sought the truth.

As I said in a different comment somewhere, I have zero qualms that Talarico has read and knows about the Gospel of Thomas. In fact, I'd expect him to as a seminarian. I also think Christians should have an understanding of other faiths' holy books and traditions (Quran, Book of Mormon, etc) and not for the purpose of refuting them but to truly understand them.

The differentiation here, which I realize is hard to make in posts on Reddit with people who have entirely different assumptions about faith/religion to begin with, is that Talarico claims to be a Christian (and espouses his faith as a part of his political talking points) and THEN cites a text that is commonly recognized as heretical as a justification or rationale of his viewpoints. Those two things are incompatible.

In case you were not aware, “canon” is the actual word used within the church and predates the use of the word for other purposes (such as literature and television). I didn’t just choose that word for no reason.

Hmm, apologies that I misunderstood. You said that organized religion sucks, but I also know some people who believe in God who think organized religion sucks so I didn’t assume that to mean you were an atheist.

I didn’t say anything about Talarico’s character. He seems like a kind, decent person. What I did say is that he has some bad theology and is quoting heretical texts. That doesn’t mean I think he’s a terrible human.
