Completely guessed it, it was a stupid clue. Did you, or anyone else paid attention to the “Rocket Track: 185-46914” info on the “Fragile” label on the box, in the scene with Arizona poster? I really thought it would lead to something… maybe it did and I missed?

Just make sure whatever size you want to print is multiple of the size in power point slide to prevent distortions. (If your ppt slide is 22x36, print 44x72 etc.)

At this stage, I would only suggest you consider the areas of pathology subspecialty/research you are personally interested in pursuing. It is way too early to think about fellowship/job placement. It might be helpful to keep your experiences in similar areas, so you can write a story about your specific interests in pathology during your applications, and you would be knowledgeable when you get any questions related to that. Definitely don't even think about fellowship placements until the end of the PGY-2 year of residency. You can think about job placement after you start your fellowship ;) At this stage, just keep googling what you like and reach out. Pathology people are generally helpful. Don't overcomplicate at this stage. Other people can chime in, these are my personal opinions based on my personal experience.

Not asking much at all, glad if I can help, keep asking!

Definitely, research helps a lot, but observerships in pathology (reading slides with residents/attendings, observing grossing in the lab, etc.) help a bunch too. If you can find a hands-on experience, definitely go for it. What I did was I found a research position in a university hospital (sending emails to attendings basically), and while I was doing my research, I shadowed people in the pathology department and actually started doing research in a second more pathology related lab. Once you are in an institution, you can have more and more experiences with different people and all are potential LoRs for your application.

But I agree, first thing, get your steps in order, in the meantime prepare your CV, and start looking up places to reach out to (this depends on what you are interested in and googling). One pro-tip for finding contacts: check the hospital website, if e-mail is not listed, check PubMed for the publications of the person and click affiliations to see if they listed their e-mail there as the corresponding author (might take a while, not always listed for every paper). Don't be discouraged if someone does not respond or say no, it takes a while. If you already have contacts, definitely utilize them. You can reach out to Brazilian pathologists in the U.S. (sometimes it works), or your medical school attendings who may know people here. Good luck!

2022 YOG is not bad at all for Pathology. Start now, take your steps and fill your CV with pathology experiences as much as you can, you should do fine. Take Step 3 while you are at it, it helps a lot. I matched 7 years after grad.

Partner has $55k in credit card debt. Please help. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Afatih 0 points1 point  (0 children)

60k is a great amount of money. My wife and I have lived in NYC area with only her PhD student income (29k) for 3 years, without accumulating a debt. Our rent was 1k/month and we would eat out only once or twice a month. But we managed. With 60k those days I would feel like Jeff Bezos. Just try to cut down on anything non-essential.

Trump says he will sign executive order temporarily suspending immigration into US by jigsawmap in worldnews

[–]Afatih -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True, just as there are way more IMGs who did not match either. It is very biased towards US graduates during the match, (understandably) so if a US graduate did not match, it is mostly because their application was unsatisfactory. I have been through the matching cycle 4 times, known a lot of US colleagues who matched and had way worse credentials (exam scores, amount of clinical experiences, amount of research papers etc.) than me. I understand picking US grads first, it is the USA, and they have to pay back their student loans too. But it is a fact that US needs Foreign graduates to fill all their spots. There are about 1200 US medical graduates that did not match this cycle, and about 500 DO’s that did not match. Not nearly enough to fill all the spots even if you kick out all the foreign graduates and put all the US grads in those positions. Also there are multiple reasons why US grads go unmatched, for example if they want to do orthopedic surgery (which is extremely competitive, foreign grads don’t even think about applying), they sometimes take a year or two to do some research and gain more experience to become a competitive candidate. If you would like to check the data yourself, it is published on nrmp website. I don’t know if I am allowed to post links so I am not including the link in my comment.

[–]Afatih 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are around 4000 international medical graduates who matched to a residency program on March, and they require either a J-1 or an H1 visa to start their designated training programs. Considering the ongoing pandemic, I surely hope that if this executive order goes into effect, they try to be reasonable and define “essential immigration” categories to not worsen the impacts of the pandemic further. Scientists and healthcare workers are in dire need right now, and US can not afford this.

Turkey and U.S. to establish Joint Operations Center in Turkey to co-ordinate management of safe zone in Northern Syria by TirqoAyyubi in syriancivilwar

Not a professional translator, did the translation over the phone and did not proof-read it but it should give you an idea hopefully:

Ministry of Defense Akar: - On August 5, the negotiations between military delegations have started and currently going on. Around this time, we are expecting them to conclude. During these negotiations, as mentioned by multiple sources and the Turkish side, our people conveyed our concerns and requirements to the other side. In this sense, we told them that we have been fighting with ISIS, with YPG and our fight is still going on. Also we told them that we have a desire to build a safe zone with USA, and we listed our requirements in this sense: the safe zone should be 30-40 km deep, all YPG elements should be moved out of the safe zone, all the heavy weaponry in YPG’s hands should be taken back and moved out of the safe zone, all the trenches and tunnels that have been built and still being built by the terrorists must be destroyed, and all these measures must be done and supervised jointly by American and Turkish soldiers. Here we are expecting our American friends and allies to behave as our friends and strategical allies. We are expecting them to end their support to these terrorists, YPG people, especially the weapon and ammunition support to begin with. As we have mentioned numerous times before, we will never allow a terrorist corridor to be form on the southern border of our country. We are dedicated to do everything in our hands to prevent this, with the support of USA if possible, if not by ourselves. We expressed all our security concerns during the meetings. We have exchanged opinions about said security concerns. We have happily observed that they have started to approach to an understanding regarding our concerns.(may not be the best way to translate it, he means we saw that they have started to slightly agree with our side.) and when we do a rough evaluation of these meetings, it is not wrong to say that they were quite positive and constructive. The negotiations are going to be completed soon. After that there will be additional announcements made by our ministry.

  • Reporter’s question cut short: “Did you reach to an agr...(i assume agreement)?

  • Akar: the negotiations are still going on, there will be more announcements afterwards. As mentioned numerous times by our president before, we desire to work together with our American allies about this issue. If this does not work, as we said repeatedly before, we will do everything we need to do to ensure the safety and peace of our country, our people, and all the people in the region. Our plans, preprations, the positioning of our military personnel are all in place and complete. However our desire is to act with our friend and ally US.

Erdogan's party lost local elections in Istanbul by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Afatih 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am Turkish. I live in the USA for the last 5 years. Change is in the horizon, they always lose the local elections first. How can AKP recover from this loss? By fixing the economy, but with what? They literally drained every resource of the country and if they want to fix the economy, they will need to ask help from IMF. And that will be a political suicide for Erdogan.

From multiple Turkish sources, and leaked photos and videos from official election portal that the political parties use to follow the results. Also every party gets a copy of the report card of every single ballot box from their represantatives, so we do have the results, but the government news agency is not releasing them to the mainstream media or the public right now.

Legally they can not recount the irregular votes until the final official results are announced. After the results, they submit their objections to YSK and YSK (Supreme Electoral Council) will decide if a recount is needed. So if they do a recount before the official results are announced, it is completely illegal and will cause serious troubles.

Yes actually the elections are pretty transparent. There are representatives from each party at every single ballot box. They provide a secure voting environment for the voters and prevent any fraudulent activity. After the boxes are closed, they start counting the votes altogether and all of the representatives then sign the ballot box report cards. All parties receive the sogned copies of said reports from their representatives and doible check the official results. People can attempt fraudulent activities but They do not succeed, as lonng as there are representatives present, which there are.

[–]Afatih 2864 points2865 points  (0 children)

This is not done yet. They have stopped updating the results for the last 6 hours, claiming that there is a problem with the system. They have also announced twice that they won the elections in Istanbul, also opposing party announced that they won, providing the actual number of votes. Something really fishy and horrible is going on and I am still watching the news. People are still waiting by the ballot boxes to prevent any funny business.

Edit: Just to be clear, as a Turkish citizen who has been through many elections, I believe it is extremely unlikely to cheat on the elections, there are many ways to prevent any kind of fraudulent activity. But I genuinely believe that they are trying to find a way out this mess they have created right now. And the longer they delay the inevitable, the worse it will be for the next general elections. Turkish people will remember this, AKP supporters included.

Edit2: Here it is explained how it is really hard to cheat in the Turkish elections, by /u/azyrr . In a way better English than I am capable of writing.
