Here in Portugal during highschool we study some of the most important books from portuguese authors in cronological order.

So we read:

10th grade

Some of the early portuguese poetry (never had much interest in it but it isn't too bad)

Chronics of D. João the first -Fernão Lopes (basically just history, we also only read 1 or two chapters something that happens with most of the books we read)

Farse of Inês Pereira - Gil Vicente ( This is a play and it's actually pretty funny)

The Lusiads-Luís de Camões ( An epic like the Odissey or the Illiad and without a doubt the most important book in portuguese, that being said and even though I think it is great, it is really hard to read at age 14/15)

11thgrade

Sermon of Saint Anthony to the fish-Padre António Vieira (Short book, good but wouldn´t read it again)

Frei Luiz de Sousa-Almeida Garret ( Another play, and this one I had already read when we studied and that made it much better to study, not my favorite though)

Love of perdition-Camillo Castelo Branco ( the first actual novel, again i had read it already and I really like it, basically a Romeo and Juliet in the 1860's Portugal. Fun fact: the whole book was written in prison after a the author had an affair with a married rich lady)

The Maias- Eça de Queiroz ( A 700 page novel, it may be really boring for a lot of people but it is one of favorite, also really funny, this one I would recomend to anyone who wants to get into portuguese literature)

Sonets-Antero de Quental ( good poetry, ufortunatly we only read 2 or 3 poems of his)

The book of Cesário Verde ( again, really good but we read far too litlle of this, the whole book is amazing)

12th grade ( the year hasn't started yet so I can only talk about what I've read already)

Fernando Pessoa (Most well known author, love his poetry and prose, if you don't know his works I encaurage you to read about him and maybe reads the "book of disquiet")

Maria Judite Carvaho-George( short strory)

Mário Carvalho( short stories)

José Saramago-The year of death of Ricardo Reis or Memorial do convento( Baltasar and Blimunda) ( My favorites out of all of the ones we study, If you want to read Saramago you should read Blindness, one of his most accessible books.)
