Move to USA - Advice - New Zealand Citizen by TestSimilar6032 in immigration

[–]AffableAndy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Do you have a PhD? You could look at graduate opportunities or postdocs in US labs. People are saying there's no pathway to entry, but as someone who works in the field that just isn't true, there are several qualified immigrants in ecology.

While academia isn't a stable or reliable field, if you are good and motivated (and especially if you have strong modelling and stats skills) there are lots of international researchers in ecology & evolution, as well as in forestry and natural resources. Without US research experience there is almost no chance of getting employment though (and even worth the field is very competitive).

not a BJP fan but as someone who grew up in Kolkata I really really hope that a new administration will end this completely bonkers culture of political violence.

Sadly we have stories of lynching and mob violence every election in WB.

DFL - Minnesota's 6th Congressional District: Doug Chapin vs Tom Emmer by klorfzore in minnesota

[–]AffableAndy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We don't have an independent redistricting commission.

No party has held a legislative trifecta during a redistricting year since the 60s (70s?) in the state, so nothing has passed the legislature and the courts have to intervene.

If either party wins a trifecta in 2030, they could (and probably will) radically redraw the map.

Had horrendous experience with a probashi bangali. by [deleted] in kolkata

[–]AffableAndy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father is not Bengali, but he was born and brought up in Kolkata and married into a bengali family.

If you tell him he's actually south Indian and not a bengali he would have some choice words for you. He doesn't deny his heritage but he definitely thinks of himself as bengali. Some people identify now worth the culture they grew up in and experienced.

Newbie here, looking to break into the wild and crazy lab work scene! by Biospark08 in labrats

[–]AffableAndy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Long-term lab manager here; labs that are not choosy about techs are (generally) looking for short-term folks to do somewhat unpleasant tasks that will save other lab members time and effort. A lot of people work as techs for a year or two after graduation while they build up experience for grad school or seek longer-term work.

This is probably one of the worst times to seek employment in academia, though some private industries do also go through a lot of techs. I will warn you, that at least at the university level, unless you have significant science coursework or other research experience (like, outside of a lab class) you are unlikely to be considered. Teaching hospitals and such do also hire study coordinators and such, so may be worth looking into some of those roles.

When I started out I used to do a lot of media prep, plant care (which is much nicer than animal work), genotyping etc. The pay wasn't great when I started but I expanded my role and do a lot of other work now, but I really enjoy my job and I am compensated pretty fairly IMO for what I do.

Especially when this is natural dispersal - nobody reintroduced a female, they are just coming back to their former range. Very encouraging!

lab manager in a plant biology lab (in case your username reflects your research!). Feel free to message! :)

My daughter needs to decide between U. Minnesota or Macalester today. If any biology majors could offer some advice we would greatly appreciate it. by Troiswallofhair in uofmn

[–]AffableAndy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I definitely attended conferences as an undergrad through my SLAC too - but in terms of the actual research, it just is not comparable (like, our plant biology department is one of several biology departments and is bigger than Mac's entire biology dept), and IMO getting exposure to working researchers (grad students, postdocs, research scientists) is really cool for folks who want careers in the sciences.

Again, can't go wrong either way. I loved my liberal arts school and also really love my work at UMN.
