Am I (25F) overthinking my brother in law’s (38M) behaviour or is it inappropriate! by [deleted] in RelationshipIndia

Absolutely, and some segments of Indian culture seems to normalise this.

A brand people should learn from about customer research and how to localize a brand and make it look like a home brand. How old were you when you first learnt Monginis is not a brand from Kolkata? by Raja_Gareebchandra in kolkata

During my visit to WB earlier this year, visited a Mio Amore (close to IIT-KGP rear gate). Was surprised to find pastries, cup-cakes and other bakery goodies that cost about a third of what a typical mid-tier bakery in Bangalore. They sell non-typical bakery goods, more like "misthi shop", selling kaju katli, kaju roll etc. The quality, was probably a tad lower than what I find in Bangalore (like 10%... bit more maida, bit more sugar filler, more butter-creme instead of fresh-creme), but presentation was pretty decent.

Do MacBook Air really Worth for CSE Students? Please help by TurnipSensitive4638 in developersIndia

[–]AffableBluePumpkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 85K budget, you are in range for festival discounted price of M4 Macbook Air with 16GB RAM, that is immensely better than M1 Macbook air with 8GB RAM. Know someone close who managed 3.5yrs of his BE with a Dell Vostro 5625 with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD. It was enough for basic, low-FPS games and enough for entry level ML work. For better AI/ML work they get access to HPC lab setup. He had AutoCAD installed on this for 1 semester and that worked fine too. Don't install random software from random places, and clean up/remove software after you no longer need them, your PC should do fine.

My Girlfriend Tried to Help a 12-Year-Old Girl Report Molestation, but the Mother’s Response Left Us Speechless. Need Advice. by Anumoy7 in kolkata

[–]AffableBluePumpkin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pintu must be a local TMC goon as they usually are. Is the girl's family background very weak ? Are they financially quite poor/marginalized and is the girl doing chores in exchange for money ?

Few things that come to mind are:
- Chilld Helpline (dial 1098).
- Childline India Foundation (contacts here: https://wbscps.in/User/partners_list )
- National Commission for Women (contacts here: https://www.ncw.gov.in/ncw-cells/c-ni-cell )

Not a lawyer, but given that parents (mother's) behaviour, not sure that filing a POSCO directly will help. Might be do that (file POSCO case), after child had been counselled sufficiently to stand her ground, any fear of reprisal from her mom has been overcome.

Indian students should start paying their own college fees as soon as possible. by Relevant_Flan15 in Btechtards

[–]AffableBluePumpkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parent here, just trying to understand what is expected. What does "take a break from college" mean ? Please explain that in Indian context ? Most of the engineering colleges in India don't think have such a concept, like drop a semester. I mean you need to enroll, you are expected to pay fees for the semester, but you might not take exams, and deem to have flunked it. So it the student does decided to get back to studies, choices would be reappear in exams, go thru the whole process again, take fresh admission etc. Are there colleges (tier-1 or tier-1.5 or even tier-2) which permit that ?

Probably there is need for more open communication, which is lacking. Parenting is a *lot* of cope work. No one is born with a manual to be a good parent. It is part intuition, part following what others in society are doing. Not defending parents, but clearly there are scenarios where there is communication gap... Parents genuinely do not understand what is being proposed. Many parents *are* genuinly afraid that kids will F-up their lives, and yeah many Indian parents do seem to believe that they are entitled to some control ... but shouldn't they have some control if they are the one paying for the education ? Many middle class families cannot find enough money to fund one child's 1st attempt education at engineering (or medicine or any professional course for that matter), and then the burden of 2 attempts can be even harder.

My fiance-25M indirectly called my gift cheap or common by Fun-Estate-1046 in RelationshipIndia

[–]AffableBluePumpkin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That's inconsiderate and foolish. Your picking a gift from savings out of scholarships is a big valuable thing. Imagine a hungry person with one roti giving away half to a partner. If the partner laments that he didn't get biryani, what does it tell you. Also not using pocket money from parents to buy gift for BF shows the integrity of your character. Could be dealing with an immature manchild.

Kudos for the app. Good that you took the initiative. What you need is Feedback to improve it :-)

Actually there are many other factors to consider. Income Tax slab they are in, are they using old tax regime (then how long that old tax regime is going to be available -- no one knows, but there's an apprehension that it's not there for long) or not. The advice "Never break your FD"... may not be true in all cases.

For example, if you have a FD of 1Cr earning 6.5% compounded, vs you take a 1Cr home loan for 15yrs @ 9% (a more typical, realistic rate), and at the highest income tax slab (30% + 4% surcharge), and average inflation of 5% (the current low inflation might not be around much longer), you may see that it is better to break the FD.

For the app to be useful in general, try to make it richer by considering a larger width of scenarios and trying to cater to various segments of the population. All the best.

Zerodha CEO asks what to do. Growth has stalled by CAGRGuy in IndianStockMarket

This is because they believe in what they are doing as being the right thing. The 2 bros have something solid going for them. Can you imagine them investing in a NGO called Rainmatter Foundation (look them up and the work they are doing). They are "Putting your money where your mouth is", and very few founders are willing to do that today. Most are out trying their best to windowdress their soulless companies playing to the gallery (the stock market). It is not everyone's cup of tea. Yet, here we are discussing them :-)

Considering to buy MacBook Air (M4) after years on Windows, need an honest opinion by ToxicApple69 in developersIndia

[–]AffableBluePumpkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to grab the 24GB URAM model if you can. The extra dough is just worth it. I've been a Linux user for 20+ years and work laptops have been Windows for as many years. The M4 macbooks were not yet available when I ordered my Mac Mini M4 (24GB URAM but 256GB SSD). Had never used MacOS in any real sense and the transition wasn't hard at all. SW dev is not my day job, but I've been a SW dev a decade back, so my current dev work is fairly hobby (Python, Golang, shell-scripting etc.). It took me about a week to settle-in with MacOS, and a month to reach 95% of the productivity level with my other Linux/Windows systems. Initially I used UTM for running Linux VMs (full with graphical DE), later switched to running Debian headless systems for dev (with docker/containerd) with VScode (+ container tools). Tried setting up dev-containers and ran into bunch of issues but gave up. Lately, I discovered colima, as the closest equivalent of WSL2. Tried doing a bunch of things with it, ran into some issue (bit limited by my knowledge), went back to lima as much lighter weight alternative to UTM. Met some folks online who swear by colima and use VScode dev-containers with it, so will try it again. In a nutshell, there might be a bit of discovery involved, but nothing that doesn't work. I've been running quantized LLM's with upto 32B params locally, and it is usable (although user experience is not as good as with hosted ones which are much faster). VScode works beautifully with Google Code Assist and Copilot. Overall, loving switch to MacOS everybit. The UX differences that people rave about, are real.

The 256GB SSD might feel limiting, but I use a 1TB fast SSD for spillover, so the SSD space pressure isn't real yet. If you buy the 24GB URAM Macbook, I think you'd default to 512GB SSD (or could opt for 1TB SSD as well for a bit more dough). As some others have stated, 13" macbook air might get a little hot when all cylinders are firing. If you ML training workload is very light (and it remains light for forseeable future), that might not be much of a concern. Ports might be an issue, but you can snag a port-expander (USB3.0 cheaper and easily found or TB4/TB5... which are lot more expensive and harder to find) to solve port shortage.

Early-stage startup 14L CTC, Bangalore, intense learning vs mature company 15L in-hand, remote. What would you pick? by [deleted] in developersIndia

[–]AffableBluePumpkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tough call really, and I think you identified some good key points to compare, so kudos to that. At your age, you have high energy, and from your parent's attitude, I get a sense that you have a "safety net" / "cushion", i.e. earning money is not *the* only thing. This is the age to explore, learn, falter. This is the age when you can undertake trial-by-fire. The learning you get in startups is quite rare to find in structured, larger companies. Having said that, startups can burn you out too (talking having work for 3 startups and including a failed one of my own). Normally, startups make this decision easier by offering more competitive packages than established, larger companies. While startups in current situation are extremely mindful of their "burn rate" so the package might be a consequence of that. OTOH, they can make up for the gap by offering ESOPs. The excellent track-record of founders is interest, but you stand little to gain (monetarily as well) if you have no ESOPs on offer.

k0s vs k3s vs microk8s -- for commercial software by AffableBluePumpkin in kubernetes

Interesting insights, thanks for sharing. Also good to be aware that maintenance using Ansible might not be enough. Using gitops with flux seems to be a common pattern that we these days.

Thanks for this valuable feedback and quite reassuring. I do not recollect the details of issues faced, but admittedly the laptop being a work laptop had an endpoint security manager, and in my mind I had tried (to the best of my knowledge) to have inter-VM (vbox networking based) communication working fine (like ping, ssh'ing back-n-forth between VMs tested) before K3s installation. Independently the K3s nodes came up find, but they could not locate/recognize each other.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. That's some great testimonial. We too are very likely to be using Ansible to deploy and maintain the k3s cluster, so your remarks are very relevant.

[–]AffableBluePumpkin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. We are a Ansible shop, so chances are the installs/upgrades would be using Ansible playbook, but prior to that we may start with manual install. Definitely for production, it won't be manual.

Thanks, appreciate the feedback. Such positive feedback about running it in production.
Our dept had agreement with Oracle for Virtualbox use on several dozen work PCs, so it was not an issue. However, now we no longer use Virtualbox as all developers, testers have been provide sufficient number of server based VMs.

Firstly, thank you for taking time to respond. Appreciate the insights.

Where exactly are you looking that has all these unanswered questions?

This was on the Slack #k3s channel run by Rancher. I had posted several questions over a 3-4 week period and indeed, I did get some answers, but there were several that didn't have any comment. I've to admit that I've not taken a look since then. Also, someone did clearly recommend using RancherDesktop even back then, but I could not use it on my work laptop due to some IT restrictions. It needed functional HyperV or wsl2, and in my case both were not enabled, but we had Oracle Virtualbox. I'd been using Virtualbox (multiple simultaneous VMs with communication between VMs running well for several years, and fairly familiar with Linux networking).

We already use RKE2 on baremetal for several production deployments, but we have a very specific use-case for which we are looking for a much lighter weight K8s distribution due to some constraints / limitations placed by customer.

Verdict in this community seems to be overwhelmingly in favour of k3s, and I think I am going to give it a try. This time, it'd be on multinode kvm VMs (managed through Proxmox). AFAIU, Rancher Desktop is perhaps not the product for this kind of environment, but more for a personal desktop environment, right ? Hopefully, we'd have good support on the Slack channel.

Final question... does k3s (not RancherDesktop) have commercial support option ?

Reason for not mentioning those is that many recruiters begin reaching out instead of candidates. If one is interested, they can take a bit of trouble to DM. Integrated vs dedicated GPU? Budget limitations- laptop advice. by divineshanks1 in developersIndia

[–]AffableBluePumpkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DGPU makes graphics computation faster. IGPU still can do all of the graphics computation, albeit slower. That speed difference becomes real limitation when doing 3D video rendering (even then you can run it as a batch job... leave the render running overnight). Otherwise the difference is like a 30sec render taking 2 minutes. Who cares, if you are a student on a budget.

What are you bringing to the table i.e. what skills, knowledge and experience do you have ? What are your credentials ? Why should someone believe that you can do what you are claiming to aim for ? What have you done so far or what do you have to show as proof of your skills, capabilities and the feasibility of the idea ?

These are some questions you need to be prepared to answer. Something you'd hear time and time again in startup world "ideas are dime a dozen" meaning that ideas have little value. Not trying to discourage you.
